Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed November 6, 1916. Serial No. 129,818.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. QUIRAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Varna, in the county of. Marshall, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Games; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in games, and has for its object to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that two or more persons can play the same without any undue skill, but at the same time affording amusement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a game constructed in such a manner that the counts of the game will be denoted upon a drum after the same has ceased to rotate.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a game including a rotating drum being operated through the medium of a ball.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for conducting the ball to the drum to rotate the drum.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a carrier for the ball, so mounted that the ball will be positively dislodged therefrom when the carrier has reached its lowest position.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of partsto be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line 4i4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a base having a vertical marginal flange 2, said base being preferably rectangular in shape. Spaced blocks 3 are mounted on the base and have bearings 4 on their upper ends for rotatably supporting the shaft 5 of the drum 6, said drum having a plurality of pockets 7 formed between its end plates 8, the purpose of which will appear later.
Upon one end plate 8 are printed circularly alined numbers, which may be ar ranged in any suitable manner, and associated with the numbers are representations of starsand the like. The numberscount their face value, while the stars can be equivalent to any number desired. The numbers and stars are separated by pins 9 so that when the pointer 9, which is carried by one of the blocks 3, is pointing be tween any of said pins it will indicate the amount scored.
Rising from the base is a post 10, said post having in certain of its sides grooves 11 and 12. 'To the upper end of the post is supported a roller 13, over which runs a cord 14:, one end of which is secured to a weight 15, slidable in the groove 12, while the other end thereof is secured to the back 16 of the carrier 17. A transverse rod 18 is secured to the back 16 and has its ends slidably engaged with the guide rods 19 carried by the post 10, and located on opposite sides of the groove 11. The carrier 17 slides vertically within the groove 11. The lower ends of the rods 19 are provided with outwardly inclined sections 20 so that when the carrier engages the stop 21, mounted in the lower end of the groove 11, the carrier can tilt outwardly, the tilting movement thereof being limited by the rod 18 when engaged with the sections 20.
A ball 22 is placed in the carrier when in its elevated position, the weight of the ball being sufficient to overbalance the weight 15 whereby the carrier will move downwardly and project the ball into the trough 23, said trough having an opening 241 formed in its outer end, so that the ball will drop therethrough and into one of the pockets 7 of the drum, whereby the drum will be rotated under the action of the ball. The number on the plate 8 of the drum stopping nearest the end of the pointer 9 will inclicate the score or count, it being of course understood that the players deposit the ball in the carrier in turn, and that any aggregate number can be determined upon for the final score.
A curved guard plate 25 depends from the trough and serves to direct the ball downwardly and into the tray from which it is lifted and placed in the carrier by the next player.
What is claimed is 1. A game comprising a base, a drum rotatably mounted thereon, a post rising from the base, a vertically movable weight controlled, carrier associated with the base for receiving a ball, said ball being dis lodged from the carrier when said carrier is in its lowermost position, and means for directing the ball to the drum for rotating the drum.
2. A game comprising a base, a drum rotatably mounted therein, a post rising from the base, said post having a pair of grooves formed therein, a carrier slidably mounted in one of the grooves, a weight similarly mounted in the other groove, a cord connecting the carrier and weight, a drum rotatably mounted on the base, a trough overhanging the drum, means supported by the post for positively causing the carrier to tilt to dis-- charge a ball in the carrier and project the same into the trough, whereby the ball is directed to the drum to rotate the same, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
