Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SETH F. WATSON, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES H. MGMURTRY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLE'RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,705, dated March 19, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. Know all men by these presents that I, SETH F. WATSON, of the city of Richmond, State of Indiana, have invented a certain Compound called The American Fire-Kindlin g, to be used 'for starting wood, coal, and other fires in place twenty-three pounds of dry sawdust, pine be ing preferable; but other kinds may be used. I next add about sixteen pounds of coal-dust or refuse fine coal from a good quality of coal; meanwhile, all the articles are thoroughly mixed together. I next add about two and one-half pounds of glue previously dissolved in suificient water to make it about the consistency of milk. I next add about seven pounds of crude petroleum, and stir so as to mix all the ingredients thoroughly. I then let it cool until it is as cold as can be worked conveniently. I next press it out in broad sheets in a press, previously placing a layer of dry saw-dust on the bottom of the press of suftl; cient thickness to prevent the materials from sticking to the press. I then place on the press suflicient of the material to make a broad sheet about one inch thick. I next sprinkle sufficient dry saw-dust on it to keep it from sticking to the press, and press it to the desired thickness and density. I then remove from the press and cut into pieces about one and one-half inches square, one piece of which is sufficient to kindle any ordinary wood or coal fire.
I claim as my invention- The composition herein specified, consisting of the ingredients named, and prepared in the manner described.
SETH F. WATSON.
