' Baguio, in the Province of Mountain, Philippine Islands,,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Pencils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to Writing implements, and has particular reference to an illuminated pencil.

The object of the invention is to provide, an improved form of pencil which maybe illuminated to facilitate the act of writing in the dark. In connection with this invention, it is furthermore the object to provide an illuminated pencil which may also be utilized as a flash light for general purposes when the writing device is not needed. To this end, the pencil is provided with a protective cap in which is fitted a lens, this protective cap forming of the pencil, a flash light of generally accepted form when in its position of protecting the point of the pencil and the lamp bulb, it being readily removed in order to permit the use of the pencil point.

A further object of the invention is to provide an implement of the above described 'type having an improved form of switch,

in that the switch also constitutes a clip for securing the pencil in the pocket when the device is not in use.

With the above objects in view and such others as may hereinafter ap ear, my invention will now be fully set orth and described, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings In the drawings Figure 1 is'a longitudinal section through the entire device with the protective cap inclosing the pencil point,

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 represents a casing section Within which is formed, along one Side, the pencil body-2, and also upon the opposite side,a tubular body 3 which constitutes a portion of the lamp structure. 'The pencil body 2 may be of any well known formation, and

inthe present instance is shown as having a longitudinally extending lead receptacle 4 from which a lead body 5 may be projected and clamped within a conical head 6, the latter being threaded within the end of the body 2 so that 'a' slight turn in one direction or the other will permit the release or the tightening of the lead, for purposes of adJustment of the point. The receptacle -3 is provided at its forward end with a lamp. socket 7 from which extends a conductive member 8 of leaf metal material which terminates at the stud 9 in electrically connected relation thereto. The stud 9 carrles the spring clip 10 whose free end is Provided with a head 11 which stands in normally spaced relation to a contact plate 12.. The latter is riveted in position upon a rivet or stud 13 whose inner end is connected to a second leaf metal striplt which extends along the inside of the tubular element 3, and at the .end of the section 1 terminates in a foot 15 which rotective is positioned to contact with one of the poles of a battery 16. Extending along the Opposite side of the tubular structure 3 is aconductor' 17 whose forward end is outturned into a spring contact 18 positioned to receive the central contact of the lamp 19 positioned in the socket 7 and whose rear end 1s formed into a contact foot 20 which is positioned to bear against the central pole of the battery 16. The battery 16 is carried in asection 21 which is slightly larger in diameter than the section 1 and is centrally threaded at its forward end to be screwed onto the rear'end of the section 1. When properly screwed onto the rear end of the section 1, the poles of the battery 16 are brought into proper relation to the

15 and 20. The rear end of the section 21 is closedby a suitable plug or cap 22 which is threaded thereon and when screwed up so that the flange 23 bears against the rear edge of the section 21, compresses a coil spring 24 into close contact with the rear end of the battery 16 so that the latter is properly held up in position.

In order to protect the bulb 19 and the pencil point, a cap 25 of suficiently elongated nature is threaded upon the forward the clip 10 which 'ing or end of the section 1, and has its outer end provided with a lens 26,so that it is not necessary to remove the cap 25 from the forward end of the section 1 in order to permit the light emanating from the bulb 19 to be sue; cessfully employed when it is not necessary to use the pencil, but merely to use the device as a flash light. 'When it is required to use the pencil, the. cap 25 may be removed and screwed upon threads 27 formed upon the cap 22 behind the flange 23, after the manner of some well known fountain pens, when the pencil may be employed and the light used to illuminate either the writfor the intermittent use of the penthe light. It should be noted that forms with the plate 12, the switch for energizing the lamp 19 is positioned and formed to provide a securing device whereby the pencil may be secured in the users pocket, this element 10 thereby having a double function, one of which it is impossible to carry out When the device is fulfilling the other. From the foregoing it will be apparent that it have provided a very simple and compact form of pencil and illuminating device which has several advantageous features of improvement over other flash lights or pens and pencils of similar types.

What I claim as my invention is An illuminated pen comprising in combination, a section including a writing imstructure and a llght supporting means at the front end thereof, a switch device, a upon the rear end of the first mentioned section, a protective cap removably carried by the forward end of the first mentioned section and inclosing the implement and light, and a lens secured in said protective cap to permit the use of the light without the removal of the cap.
