Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIUS P. P. Rns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Agitators, of which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to mechanical agitators and more particularly to that class of agitators which are used to agitate heavy liquids such as might be used in the wood and coal tar distillation industries. The principal objects of this invention are to provide an improved and novel type of agitator which embodies paddles revolving in a vertical plane and at the same time rotating horizoni ally.'
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specifications, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my device with parts broken away along a vertical center line. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a yoke detail. Fig. 3 is a plan view taken along line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail and fragmentary plan view of the extreme bottom of the agitator tank. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of paddle rotating mechanism with parts broken away. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional elevation along line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularlyto the drawings, numeral 7 indicates a cylindrical tank having a hemispherical bottom 8 and a cover 9. An inner shaft 10 is mounted vertically and centrally within tank 7 and takes bearing in a foot block 11 at the bottom of the tank 7. An outer tubular shaft 12 fits revolubly over shaft 10 and extends from above tank down to the paddle revolving mechanism. A supporting bracket 13 supports shaft 12 and may be secured to a frame work if so desired. The outer shaft 12 is caused to revolve by gearing, belting or other standard transmission means while the inner shaft 10 remains stationary. A fluid tight box 14: incloscs the mechanism operating paddles 15. There are eight (more or less) similar paddles 15 which are mounted in groups of four (more or less) each upon similar shafts 16. shafts 16 are oppositely disposed and perpendicular to shaft 10 and at their inner ends take bearing in a bearing block 17 which is secured to the lower end of outer shaft 12 and which revolves with the said shaft. The outer ends of shaft 16 take bearing in the ends of a bail 18 which is secured to shaft 12. The ends of bail 18 are connected by means of a hoop 19. 20 are secured to the inner ends of shaft within box 14 and cooperate a drive gear 21 which is secured to inner shaft 10 so that the gear 21. remains stationary while the gear 20 revolves about the gear 21. The paddles 15 are similar and are formed of slatted or open work construction. Upstanding mixers 22 are secured to the upper portion of bail l8 and also assist in agitating the liquid in the tank. My device has been found particularly well adapted to agitating liquids such as coal tar and wood tar distillates in the distillation of wood oil and acetates, or any liquid which has a; tendency to separate due to the specific gravity of the constituents.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that 7 many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore tionary shaft, a bail secured to said tubular shaft, a hoop secured to the ends of said bail and end bearings for said radial shafts in said hoop.
