IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.

SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN W. J oNEs of. PhilipDe Catesby, of Hereford, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad Oar Oouplings; and that he does hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to that class of carcouplings which are automatic in their operation; and consists in an improvement on the car-coupling for which Letters Patent were granted me April 25, 1871', and will be more fully explained hereinafter.
. by catching against the studs 6 c in the lower plate of the bar 0, prevent the arms from being thrown out'too far by the spring d. The
bar 0 is tapered or beveled near the outer end, so that it shall enter without hitching between the two pins B B. The. spring d! may be of steel, and of the form shown; or it may be of soft India rubber of any suitable form, or of any suitable material in the spiral form. If desired, both ends of the coupling-bar may be in the same form, just as they are in said original Letters Patent. The coupling with this improvement, like the original one, acts automatically. When the coupling-bar enters between the two pins B B the arms D D are forced inward, compressing their spring, until, after passing the shoulders at a beyond the pins, the spring throws them out and locks the bar in the draw-head. The upper and lower plates of the draw-head should be a sufficient distance apart to allow the coupling-bar C to turn edge up in case one of two contiguous cars should turn over, and the coupling-pins should be placed so far apart as to permit the same movement, to facilitate which the corners of the coupling-bar, as well as of the arms D D, may be rounded off.
This, my invention, may be employed with great benefit in the fastening of tongues to all kinds of vehicles and in attaching the fore axles to the hind axles.
Claim.
WVhat I claim as my invent-ion is The combination of the arms D D on couplingba-r 0, having the points 6 e, the spring cl, and the coupling-pins B B in the draw-head A, constructed substantially and for the pur-
