ROWBOAT-PROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed April 11, 1917. Serial No. 161,238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Dnnsnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rowboat-Propellers, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention is an improved propeller and propeller operating mechanism for use especially on a row-boat instead of oars, and adapted to be operated manually, the object of the invention being to provide an im proved row-boat propeller and propeller operating mechanism which may be readily attached to any ordinary row-boat, may be adjusted at any required angle, according to the depth of the boat and which may be used in steering as well as for propelling the boat.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a propelling mechanism constructed and'arranged in accordance with my invention, and showing the same applied to a row-boat.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the boat showing two of the propelling mechanisms, one on either side of the boat.
Fig. 3 is a detailed vertical sectional view of my improved propelling mechanism, on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the propeller.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the supporting bracket.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a bracket 1 which is adapted to be arranged on one side of a row-boat and which is provided on its inner side with a clamping arm 2 to pass over the gunwale downwardly on the inner side of the gunwale the said clamping arms being provided with a pair of thumb screws 3 for engaging the gunwale and which coact with the clamping arm to firmly and yet detachably secure the bracket to one side of the boat.
I provide a casing 4 which has a tubular arm 5. A propeller shaft 6 extends through the tubular arm and is mounted in suitable bearings 7 At the inner end of the propeller shaft and within the body of the casing is a miter-gear 8. Said gear is engaged by a similar gear as on a shaft 10. Said shaft is mounted in a bearing 11 with which the casing is provided. The said shaft extends inboard and is provided at its inner end with a hand crank 12 which has a handle 13. .The handle may be grasped to enable the crank shaft to be manually rotated and hence cause the propeller shaft and propeller 14- at the lower or outer end of said shaft to be revolved, as will be understood.
The casing is connected to the bracket by a pivot element 15 which adapts the casing and propeller shaft to be arranged at any desired inclination, and to extend rearwardly of the boat. The bracket also has a segment 16 at a suitable distance below the pivot 15, the tubular arm of the casing having a member 17 which slidably bears against the outer face of the segment and is also provided with a clamping device, such as a thumb screw 18 to engage the segment and thereby secure the propelling mechanism at the desired or required angle or inclination, according to the depth of the boat on which the propelling mechanism is used.
In practice a pair of my improved propelling mechanisms will be used on the boat, one on each side thereof, and respectively arranged to be driven by the right and left hands of the user, who may sit facing the bow. WVhen the propelling mechanisms are both driven at a same rate of speed the boat will move straight ahead. By operating one propelling mechanism faster than the other the course can be changed. By operating the propelling mechanisms reversely the boat can be turned within very short space.
A suitable grease cup 23 is at the lower end of each tubular arm of the casing.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A hand propelling mechanism of the class described comprising a casing having a tubular arm, a propeller shaft mounted in and extending through the tubular arm and provided at the inner end, at a point within the casing, with a gear, a driving shaft mounted in thecasing and havin a gear 5 engaging that of the propeller sha t, and a' bracket'for attachment to one side of a boat and to which bracket the said tuhulararm is pivotally connected for vertical angular movement, said bracket having a segment and means to secure the tubular arm to the 1' segment at any angular adjustment of said tubular arm and casing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
