Description

C. BARNES. BOAT PROPELLER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 5, I915.
Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
COLUMBIA PLANOCIRAPH co wAsl-llNaTnN, D. c.
lilhlliTEll) TATE PATENT CHARLES S. BARNES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF CQLUIVIBIA.
BOAT-PROPELLER.
Application filed. April 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CrmnLns S. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Propellers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boat propellers and has for its object the provision of a manually operable mechanism adapted for application to a canoe, row-boat or the like whereby same may be propelled through the water with ease and rapidity.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a boat propeller of the reciprocating type embodying a pivoted paddle member known technically as a feathering blade, a novel mounting being provided for said blade whereby same may be swung clear of the water when it iSdesired to effect a landing or for other purpose.
WVith the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a canoe of conventional type with the invention applied, the blades being indicated in dotted lines as swung clear of the water. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with the blade partially elevated. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. i is a similar view taken on the line M of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown in conventional form a canoe A to the gunwales B of which, the improved propelling mechanism is applied, said mechanism comprising separate attachmentsC arranged at each side of the canoe and operable independently one of the other.
As each of the attachments C is the exact counterpart of the other a description of one will readily serve for both, similar characters of reference being employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 10 thus designates a pair of spaced supporting brackets which are de- Specification of Letters Patent.

tachably engaged as at 11 to the gunwale B of the canoe and include telescoping sections 1:2 and 12 which are adjustable both vertically and horizontally with respect to the attaching portion whereby they may be adusted to boats of various shapes and sizes. The sections 12 of the brackets extend be yond the gunwale of the canoe, and arranged longitudinally of the latter and connecting the free ends of said sections is a supporting rod 13. Mounted for reciprocation upoii thls rod is a slide block 1%, said block being provided with a tapered socket 15 in which is removably engaged an operating handle 16 directed inwardly of the canoe for convenient manipulation by the operator. To prevent rotation of he blockupon the rod 13, spaced guides 1'4" are employed, same belng connected as at 18 to the sections 1:2 of the brackets and having slidably engaged therebetween the handle 16. Disposed outwardly of and supported from the blocks 1% are brackets 19, each comprising a pair of oppositely turned U-shaged members 20, 20 which are swivelly connected together as at 21, the former embracing and being suitably secured as at 22 to the block while the latter is provided with a pivot bolt 23 connecting the arms thereof. Pivot-ally mounted upon the bolt '23 is a paddle member including a blade at and a post 25, the latter being pro vided with a reinforcingplate 26 pivotally engaged at its upper end with the bolt 23, there being formed at the base of the post a socket 27 receiving the lower end of the bolt. To limit pivotal movement of the blade in one direction so that same may stroke the boat upon reciprocation thereof, there are extended outward from the latter, rigid arms 28 engageable by corresponding faces of the posts. Angle plates 29 are also provided for limiting reciprocatory movement of the paddle mechanism, said plates being secured on opposite sides of the block 1% and disposed in parallel relation with the supporting rod 13 whereby to engage the brackets 10 and prevent contact of the mechanisms therewith.
It has been found necessary during op eration of the propellers to prevent swiveling of the bracket members 20, 20 and a consequent swinging of the paddle clear of the water during forward motion of the mechanism. For this purpose there is employed a lever 30 mounted upon the block 14 and operable to engage the post- 25 at the Patented Nov. so, tars.
side corresponding with the arm 28, the lat ter likewise serving to prevent such swiveling movement during rearward stroke of the device.
In operation, it is obvious that during rearward movement of the paddle, same will be presented broadside to the water and thus serve to propel the boat rapidly therethrough, while movement forwardly will cause said member to feather and thereby offer a minimum resistance to the boats progress, return of the paddle to stroking position being facilitated by increasing the pitch at one side of the blade as indicated at 31.
When it is desired to eiiect a landing while employing the device, the paddle may be readily swung clear of the water to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, this being accomplished by disengaging the lever 30, and swinging the paddle on the swivel connection of the bracket members, the
handle 16 being then withdrawn from the socket and the mechanism swung inwardly on the rod 13 as a pivot.
What is claimed, is
1. A propelling mechanism comprising the combination with a boat, of spaced supports detachably mounted thereon and projecting'beyond the gunwales, a rod connecting the outer ends of the supports, a slide block mounted for reciprocation on the rod, a paddle swivelly and pivotally connected with the block, adapted upon movement in one direction to stroke the boat and to feather in the other direction, and means for limiting swiveling movement of the paddle. 2. An attachment of the class described comprising spaced attaching members, a rod connecting corresponding ends of said members, a block slidable on the rod, means for reciprocating the block, and a paddle connected with the block operable upon movement in one direction to extend at right angles to the rod and parallel therewith upon movement in the opposite direction.
3. An attachment of the class described comprising spaced attaching members, a rod connecting corresponding ends of said members, a block slidable on the rod, means for reciprocating the block, a paddle swivelly and pivotally connected with the block, and
means for limiting pivotal and swiveling.
movement of the paddle.
In testimony whereof, I my signature, in the presence of two wltnesses.
