To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known .that I, LEONARD A.y Howii, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W aukon, in the'countyk of Allamakee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings, fof which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in awnings, and has for its'object to provide a frame for supporting awnings, wherein one endk of the awning isconnected with the roller arranged above the window or door to be screened to wind thereon, andfwherein the improved frame comprises a body to which the other end of the awning is connected, and arms extending laterally from the body and hinged to the easement of the door or window, the arms being sectional and the sectionsV being connected by arule joint to permit the jointto fold downward but to limit the upward movement of the joint to a position where the sections are in alineinent, together with a exible member connected with the supporting means for the roller and with the upper section of the arms for assisting in raising and lowering the frame.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved awning in use and with the awning folded, and
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are diagrammatic side views showing the position of the parts during opening movement of the awning.
In the store front of the present day where prism or other glass is used just above the awning supports for lighting the interior of the building the roller which supports the awning must of necessity be placed so low on the building that in order to have the frame of the proper height above the walk, means must be provided which will permit the end of the frame attached to the building to slide up and down to permit the front edge of the awning to fold against the roller.
The present embodiment is designed to dispense with this sliding construction which is expensive and unsightly, and wherein the slide rods because of their tendency to bind do not give satisfaction.
In addition when the awning is raised orv lowered these slides must be moved on the rods to complete the operation of properly spreading of the awning.

One end of the roller is extended,
and is provided with a bevel'gear 4, which meshes with a similar gear 5 on a vertical 6, by means of which the roller may strip 6 which is connected at vone end to the. roller to wind thereon.

each arm consisting of sections Sand 8a as shown. kThe sections of vthe arms are connected by a rule joint 9 which is so arranged that while the sections may move freely in one direction they cannot move in the opposite direction beyond a point where the sections are in alinement. The section 8El of each arm is pivoted to the adjacent side member of the easement by means oi'' a bracket 10, and the rule joint is so arranged that while the joint may move downward it may not move upward beyond the level of the bracket 10.
With the parts in the position of Fig. 1, when it is desired to lower the awning, the roller is turned to wind off the awning strip. Were no means provided upon which the sections 8 of the arms could :tulcrum, the sections 8a would merely retain the position yshown in Fig. 1 when the awning were lowered and it would be necessary to raise the joint 9 after the awning was lowered. To obviate this additional labor a exible member 1l as for instance, a chain, is arranged at each side of the awning, each chain being connected to an eye 12 on the adjacent supporting bracket of the roller.
Each chain is branched at its lower end into branches 13 and 14 of approximately the saine length and these branches of each l means for fulcrum upon the chain l1 and its branch 13 until the sections are almost in alinement when the branch 14: comes into play. Since the connection of the branches 14 with the section 8 is farther removed from the joint than that of the branches 13 there is a greater leverage brought to bear upon the joint to lift the same and straighten the sections.
