Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Skinnners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a mechanical skimming device for removing organic or other matter from the water of steam boilcrs and the like, while the same are in operation, and without in any way interfering It is a well-known fact that unless some means or method are employed to remove said matter, a scale soon forms on the fines or tubes and other surfaces on the inside of a boiler', thereby greatly reducing its efficiency and necessitating a shut-down to permit of removal of same. Furthermore, priming ditlicultcs are also met with when the water is not maintained clean; and the boiler will be caused to foam', which will delay the rapidity with which steam may be gotten up. The latter defects are particularly objectionable in connection with locomotive boilers, which are, as a mat-ter of fact, required to be washed out at frequent inten vals. The delay in operation and consequent eXpense and loss is particularly aggravated in case scale has formed, when a locomotive is placed entirely out of commission.
4It is thc object of the present invention to provide a device by which the boiler water may be skimmed or cleaned mechanically, that is to say, without the use ofsodaash or boiler compound, and whereby the frequent washing out of the boiler will be obviated.
The nature of the invention will be best understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the improved skim'- ming device as installed in a locomot ve type of boiler.

Referring' to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, in which the invention is set forth more particularly in connection with a locomotive type of boiler, 10 designates the boiler and 11 the dry-pipe thereof; and about which latter it is convenient to secure the skimming device hereinafter described. It is, of course, to be understood that this device may be secured in any other suitable manner to some stationary part of the boiler.`
The said skimming device comprises two yokes or headers 12 and 13 which are secured to the drypipeby means of straps 14 and nuts l5, or in any other suitable inan-v ner, to rigidly hold the skimming mechanism to the boiler. Between the`said heads and communicating therewith is a discharge or outlet pipe 16 which is extended through the boiler wall, and communicates, as through a suitable pipe 17, with some suitable discharge point (not shown). The pipe 16 is adapted to receive from the headers 12 and 13 the organic and other matter skimmed from the surfaces of the boiler water (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 3).
The means to deliver this matter to said headers comprises essentially a skimmer tube, or pair of tubes, 20 upon which are symmetrically mounted' pairs of floats 21 of suitable construction. For example, the same may be mounted upon a bracket 22, Fig. t, provided with oppositely disposed arc-shape sides to which are riveted circular holding bands 23, said bands being adapted to surround the oats and securely hold same, as by means of bolts and nuts 24 which serve to tighten the bands. The bracket 22, moreover, is adjustably mounted relatively to the skimmer tube 20 as by being drilled vertically and having a rod 25 passing therethrough. This rod is preferably made in two parts, as shown, the upperportion of each being semi-circular, and adapted,- to surround a skimmer tube 2O to which it is secured as by means of bolts and. nuts 26, clamping, the two members t0- getlier over said tube.v To x the bracket 22 and thereby the Heats 21 carried by same,l
a set screw or similar device 27 is employed transversely to said rod 25 and bears thereon, as is Well understood.
In the locomotive type of boiler herein disclosed, four pairs of floats are shown, two on either side of the outlet pipe 16, the apparatus on one side being a duplicate of that on the other. By means of the adjustment thus afforded, the position of the various pairs of floats, and thereby a plurality of longitudinal slots 28 along both sides of the skimmer tubes, is positively determined with respect to the surface of the water and may be maintained as desired. Furthermore, by means hereinafter disclosed, a pair of floats always maintains a horizontal position irrespective of the rise and fall of the water level in the boiler.
For this purpose, each skimmer tube is mounted to be rotatable about its own axis as Well as revoluble about a further axis, or rather a supporting and discharge tube 30 located beneath a said tube 20. The ends of'tube 2O are connected to suitable Ts 3l in such manner as to discharge the matter received by said tubes through a T into short lengths of pipe which in turn are connected to similar Ts 33 located near the ends of a supporting or discharge tube 30. To provide for the rotation of .a tube 2O about its own axis, there is attached to each end thereof, F ig.` 5, a bushing y34 which extends into the T in any well-known or special manner to provide a suitable junction; and between the outletof theT and the said bushing, there is mounted a plurality of rollers 35 which afford proper bearing for the rotation of said tube 20 in the T. The opposite end` of the T 31 may be suitably closed or plugged, and there is attached thereto a roller 3G which is movable with said tube'20, and having its axis of rotation located at right .angles thereto. This roller is adapted to ride over the face of an arcuate member 37 secured to a header l2 or 13, or rather to one end of a T 38, Fig. 6. A stop 39 is provided on the arcuate member to limit the extent of oscillation of the roller 36 and thereby of the tube 20, and the said member 37 is adjustable vertically in the T 38, butnheld against lateral movement by a guide-way 40.
From the T 33, a connection is made to the T 38, in manner similar to the connection hereinbefore described, relatively to tube 20 and T 3l. That is to say, tube 30 is also rotatable about .its own axis in the T'SS and delivers to the latter the matter collected from the said tube 20. The outlets ofthe Ts 38 communicate through short lengths of pipe 4l with the headers Yl2 or 13,Y said lengths 4l also rigidly securing the Ts 38 to the said headers. Furthermore, a tube 41 is adjustable vertically in the corresponding header and is held in position therein by a suitable set screw or the like 42. Thus, a convenient adjustment of the entire apparatus is afforded relatively to the headers and to the boiler itself.
Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate the application of the improved skimmer to a Stirling type of boiler or return tubular boiler. as a rule, but a single skimmer tube 50 is required with two pairs of floats 51 attached as hereinbefore described, and the guide roller and arcuate guide are omitted. The said skimmer tube 50 is rotatably mounted about a discharge tube 52, as in the previous embodiment; and it is preferred to provide a counterweight 53 for the portion of the structure above the tube 52. To attach the apparatus to .a boiler of this type, it is preferred to provide a rod or suitable upright 54 which is lixedly secured, in any manner, to the boiler, and to adjustably mount the said apparatus thereon as throughlugs 55 and set screws 56. These lugs are respectively attached to the header' 57 and to the T 58 at the end of a supporting and discharge tube 52, the entire apparatus being adjustably mounted relatively to a said header 57 as in the previous embodiment.

A boiler skimmer, comprising: a skimmer tube provided with a plurality of slots to receive the material from the surface of the water of the boiler; floats mounted thereon; a supporting and discharge tube communicating with said skimmer tube, the latter being'revoluble about the former and also rotatable on its oWn axis.
2. A boiler skimmer, comprising: a skimmer tube provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots to receive the material from the surface of the Water of the boiler; floats adjustably mounted thereon and movable therewith; a supporting and discharge tube communicating with said skimmer tube, the latter being revoluble about the former and also rotatable on its own axis.

A boiler skimmer, comprising: a skimmer tube provided with a plurality of slots to receive the material from the surface of the water of the boiler; floats mounted there on; a supporting and discharge tube rotatable about its own axis and communicating withv said skimmer tube, the latter being revoluble about the former and also rotatablel on its own axis.
4. A boiler skimmer, comprising: a rotatable skimmer tube-provided with a plurality of slots to receive the material from the surface of the Water of the boiler; floats mounted thereon; rollers carried by the ends of said skimmer tube; 'arcuate members or tracks against which said rollers bear; and a supporting and discharge tube communieating with the said skimmer tube and about which the latter is revoluble.
