T0 all whom it may concern:l Y
Be it known that I, PETER E. VALENTINE, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Ready, in the County of Grayson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in jacks, and the invention has for its object to provide a jack especially adapted for use with the improved brass puller forming the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,220,911, granted March 27, 1917, wherein a base is )rovided for enOaOinOf beneath the tread of.
the rail and a plate connected therewith for engaging the flange of the rail, the jack being mounted upon the base to be moved toward and from the flange engaging the plate.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2, both views looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent the line.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a suitable base 1 is provided, the said base having a nose 2 at one end for engaging beneath the tread of a rail, the said base being adapted to be seated upon a cross tie, adjacent to the journal box to be lifted.
A yoke comprising a body portion 3 and arms f1 is connected to the base at the end adjacent to the nose, the arms being secured to the base by bolts, as shown, and a flangeengaging plate 5 is hinged to the body of the yoke at one end of the plate, the free end of the plate extending toward the nose. A bolt 6 is connected with the base intermediate the ends of the flange, and this bolt extends through an opening in the plate, and is engaged by a nut 7 above the plate. By means of the nut the free end of the plate may be clamped down upon the flange to prevent the wheel from rising with the journal box when the said journal box is lifted.
The base has oppositely arranged undercut guides S at the opposite sides thereof, and extending longitudinally thereof, and a pla-te 9 is mounted to slide in the guides, the side edges of the plate engaging beneath the undercut guides.
A jack 10 of suitable construction is se-l cured to the plate by means of angle plates 171,' and the plate has an upstandinglug- 12 at thev 'end remote from the flange-engaging plate in which is journaled a screw 13. This screw passes through a threaded op,e111l..`. alug 141 connected with the end of the base remote from the nose, and the screw has a hand wheel 15 for convenience in turning the same. It will be evident that when the screw is turned the plate and the jack will be moved toward or from the yoke. The jack 'has the usual socket and pawl carrier 16 for operating the same, the pawl of the pawl carrier engaging teeth 17 on the screw of the jack, and a suitable handle may be inserted in the socket. to assist in turning the SCFSV.
In operation, when it is desired to pull the brass, the base 1 is arranged upon a tie or other suitable support at the journal box, with the nose 2 of the vase engaging beneath the tread of the rail. The plate 5 is engaged with the wheel, and the nut 7 is turned down until the free end ofthe plate clamps the wheel to the rail. The jack is now adjusted to a proper position beneath the journal box, and by turning the jack the journal box will be lifted, while the axle and the wheel will be prevented from rising with the journal box by the plate 5.
I claim:
1. A device of -the character specified, comprising a base having a nose for engaging beneath the tread of a rail, a yoke comprising a body above the base, and arms secured to the base at the end adjacent to the nose, a flange-engaging plate hinged to the yoke and extending at its free end toward the nose, a bolt connected with the base and extending upwardly intermediate the ends of the flange-engaging plate, said plate having an opening through which the bolt extends, a nut threaded on to the bolt above the plate, guides extending longitudinally of the base at the opposite sides thereof, a jack, a plate slidable in the guides toward and from the nose and to which the jack is secured, and means for moving the plate.
2. A device of the character specified, comprising a base having a nose for engaging beneath the tread of a rail, a yoke comprising a body above the base, and arms secured to the base at the end adjacent to the nose, a flange-engaging plate hinged to the yoke and extending at its free end toward the nose, means for limitingv the upward movement of the free end of the plate, a
jack having guided movement on the base n 4. A device of the character specified toward and from the plate, and means for moving the jack.
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a base adapted to engage at one end beneath the tread of a. rail, a jackhaving guided movement longitudinally of the base, means for moving the jack, and means cooperating with the end of the base for engaging a Wheel to clamp the same to the track.
p comprising a base having means at one end for clamping a Wheel to the rail, a j ack having guided movement longitudinally of the l5 rail toward and from the Wheel-engaging means, and means for moving the jack.
