Description
0.1. CLARKE.
LANDSIDE SHOE FOR FLOWS. APPLICATION FILED NOV.22.1916.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917 UNITED STATES PATENT orsion CHARLES J. CLARKE, or KING-sienna, osnrronivrn.
LANnsIDE-sHon F012, rLows;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 22, 1916. Serial No. 132,861.
To all'whomit may concern: I
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingsburg, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Landside- Shoes for Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements'in landside shoes for plows, the primary object of which'is to devise such ashoe which is applicable to the landside of a plow after the lower edge and heel thereof has become so worn as to defeat its successful operation.
Another object of the present improvement is to construct the attaching means of the shoe, so that though the-heel and lower edge of the landside may be badly worn, the shoe will be correctly alined against the heel and lower edge of the landside and'present a true working surface.
A further object of the'present improve-' ment is to construct a shoe which is simple to apply, durable, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the present improvement will be set forth in the following description and drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a. turning plow showing my improved shoe applied to the landside thereof.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary disasa sembled perspective view of the shoe and showing its attachment to the heel of the landside.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the front end of my improved shoe and showing its attachment means to the front end of the landside.
, Fig. 5 is a reduced fragmentary perspective view of a landside shoe having an additional wearing surface along the outer edge thereof.
Referring now to the drawings in detail in which like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several figures, 1, 2, 3 and 4 represent the body-portion, mold-board, plow-point and handles of a turning plow of the usual construction and well-known to those skilled in the art. A landside 5 is attached tothe body portion 1 of he pl t in t e u a mann r. This Patented Nov. 13-, 1917.
landside "5 is provided with a detachable face plate 6 having an obliquely cut rear end 7 which fits along the upper face of a triangular depressed portion 8, formed in the lower edge of the rear end of the landside 5.
Heretofore, the depressed portion 8 of the T landside 5 is adapted'to receive a detachable heel 8 a fragmentary portion of which-is shown in Fig. 2. This heel is ofa size and shape to fit within the depression 8 in the landside 5- and may be removed when worn and anew one applied as is wellknown to.
those skilled i-ntliis art. It has been found heretofore, however, that when the heel has become worn the entire lower edge 9 of the landside has also worn to such a' degree that when a new heel is applied it will project below the worn edge of the landside and present'a broken working surface'which seriously impairs the successful operation of the plow. To overcome these 'difliculties, I have constructed a landside shoe consisting of a narrow but thick plate 10, of a length sufiicient to extend below the entire bottom edge of the landside. A triangular-shaped portion 11 is made integral with the plate 10 and plumb with the outer edge thereof. This triangular portion 11 is adapted to fit against the lower edge 7 of the plate 6, and within the triangular-shaped recess 8 in the landside 5. The other end of the plate 10 is provided with a vertical wedge-shaped flange 12 plumb with the inner edge of the plate and provided at its outer end with an ear 13, having a slotted opening 14 therethrough. The shoe is applied as follows: The plate is placed along the bottom of the landside 5, the triangularshaped portion 11 fitting within the recess 8 in the landside and secured thereto by means of a bolt (not shown) passing through registering openlandside 5 and is secured thereto by means 7 of a bolt 16 passing through the opening 1 1 in the ear 13 and through registering open ings made in the landside and plate .6, thereby fastening the rear part of the frog plate 21 of the plow, the plate 10, the outer end of the landside, and the outer end of the plate 6, together. Due to the slotted opening 14, the shoe may be adjusted vertically to compensate for the wear along the bottom edge of the landside. The bolt 18 passing through registering openings 19 and 20 secures the inner end of the landside 5 and plate 6 together. In some instances, Where a greater Wearing surface for the landside shoe is desired, a small elevated strengthening flange 2:2 is made along the outside top edge of the shoe extending from the front end of the shoe to the triangular portion 11, as is shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a plow landside having a removable face plate and a recess adapted to receive a detachable heel, of a shoe comprising a member extending beneath the bottom edge of the landside, a member carried by one end thereof and fitting Within the said recess in thelandside, a member carried by the other end of the shoe, and means for connecting the said member, removable face plate and landside together.
2. The eombinationwith a plow landside, of a shoe attachable thereto, said shoe comprising a plate extending beneath the bottom edge of the landside, a triangular shaped member carried by one end of the plate and attachable to the front face of the heel of the landside, and an ear carried by the other end thereof engaging the rear face of the landside and attachable thereto.
3. The combination with a plow landside,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing theVCommissioner of Patents.
of a shoe attachable thereto, said shoe comprising a plate extending below the bottom edge of the landside, a member carried by one end thereof and attachable to the front face of the heel of the landside, a wedge-shaped flange carried by the other end of the plate and engaging the inside of the landside, and an ear carried by the wedgeshaped flange and providing means for attachment to the landside.
- l. The combination with a plow landside, of a shoe attachable thereto, said shoe comprising a narrow plate extending beneath the bottom edge of the landside, a vortically extending member carried by one end thereof and attachable to the front face of the heel of the landside, and providing means for attaching the shoe to the landside, a Wedge-shaped vertical flange carried by the rear end of the plate and engaging the inside of the landside, said wedge-shaped flange having its greatest width at the outer end of the plate, and an ear carried by the said flange and providing means for attaching the shoe to the landside.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES JACKSON CLARKE.
