PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent; Patgnted N 13 191% Application filed November 2, 19l6. Serial No. 129,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL D. SMITH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have mvented certaln new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps.
My improvements relate mainly to the pump cylinder and are especially designed by me for embodiment in liquid pumps for pumping milk and other liquids which necessitate frequent cleaning to keep tnem in Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointedout in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a plan view of the cylinder portion of a pump embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 11 is a plan view with the face plate or cover plate removed showing the arrangement of the ports and passages and also the disposition of the valves.
Fig. line corresponding to line 33 of Figs. 1, II and V, showing the arrangement of the intake passages and ports.
Fig. TV is a detail vertical sect-ion on a line corresponding to line H of FigsI and II, showing the arrangement of the outlet passages andports.
Fig. V is a detall transverse section on a line correspondlng to line 5-5 of Figs. 1,
III is a detail vertical section on a.
II and Ill, showing the relation of the inlet and dlscharge-ports to each other and to the cylinder bore.
Flg V1 is a detail transverse section taken on a line corresponding to line 66 of Figs.
I HI lIV "l i, aac snowing t 1e arrangement of the inlet and discharge passages in. the.
cylinder.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking" in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the pump cylinder lillustrated is a casting having a head 1 formed integral therewith. The cylinder. is provided at its inner end with a flange l for removably mounting the cylinder upon'the head plate 2 carried by the yoke 2 The piston 3, which is shown convention; ally, 1s provlded with a p1ston rod 4 recip The rocating through the stuffing b02115. cylinder flange is adapted to receive the attaching bolts by which it is removably secured in position, the bolts not being illustrated.
The cylinder 1 has a fiat face 6 at one side, the face being preferably perfectly fiat, as shown, so that it may be readily machined.
Leading from one side of the cylinder and parallel with the face 6 is an inlet passage 7, the passage being formed by drilling.
his passage is provided with a pair of spaced delivery ports 8 and 8 which open at the face of the cylinder, these being formed by bores from the face positioned to intersect the bore forming the inlet passage 7.
The inlet passages'9 and ,9 and the outlet passages 12 and 12 are disposed" in 0pposed pairs at the ends of the cylinder and transversely of the cylinder bore. These passages are also preferably drilled and are disposed so that the outer sides of their bores are tangential to the bore of'the cylinder, thus avoiding any shoulders or projections where the port bores enter the cylinder bore."
.The ports 8 and 8 of the inlet passage-7 are provided with valves 13 and 13. These valves seat in the face of the cvlinder which is preferablybeveled around the ports, as shown. The stems of these'valves slidably fit the ports and serve to guide the valves in their movement.
The discharge ports 12 and 12 are provided with valves 1% and 14, respectively, Which also seat on the face of the cylinder, all the valves being duplicates so that they may be used interchangeably.
The face plate 15 is removably mounted on the face 6, the cylinder being provided with projecting threaded studs 16 arranged through perforations in the plate end clamped in position by means of the winged nuts 1'7. This face plate is provided with channel-like recesses in its inner face which coact with the face of the cylinder to provide valve chambers and connecting passages for the ports. The plate is provided with recesses 18 and 18 which connect the ports 8 and 8 with the ports 9 and 9, respectively. The plate is also provided with a passage recess 19 which connects both of the ports 12 and 12 with the outlet passage 10.
By forming the inlet and outlet passages in the cylinder 1 it is unnecessary to disturb the cylinder connections when the plate 15 is removed. When the plate 15 is removed all of the valves may be freely removed and as these valves are interchangeable they may be conveniently replaced in operative position. The passages are all arranged so that they are accessible for cleaning and, as stated, they are preferably formed by drilling so that their walls are smooth and readily cleaned. The cylinder is mounted so that it can be quickly removed and drawn off the piston, thus adapting the structure for pumping milk or other liquids which necessitate frequent cleaning. 7
\Vith the parts thus arranged the action of the pump is as follows: In Fig. III the parts are illustrated with the piston in its outstroke. On this outstroke the liquid in front of the piston is forced through the port 12 past the valve H to the discharge,
10. The same movement draws a charge through the passage 7 past the valve 13 and through the port 9 of the cylinder. On the return stroke the charge thus drawn in is discharged through the outlet port 12' past the outlet valve 1 1 to the discharge 10.
By this simple arrangement I secure a double acting pump in which the parts are few and one which, as stated, is readily assembled and disassembled and kept in a sanitary condition.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in the form in which I have embodied the same for the market. I have not illustrated or described certain modifications in structural details which might be desirable to adapt my invention to various pumps and pumps designed for other purposes as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which this invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may render desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
