HENRY A. KRAMER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DECORATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 13, 1 917.
ppl cat o fi e Apr l 16, 7 Se i l N 62,31
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of lrlichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorating Devices. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a holder for flags and other decorative devices and its object is to provide a simple and cheap device which may be readily engaged with a column or other support and is provided with means whereby a flag or other article having a stafi or rod may be held in any desired position or at any angle. is to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction and arrangement of parts.
With these and other ends in View the in-' .rention cons sts in the matters here nafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in whicln Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device l t iv f th en ion ith p rt ons broken away to show the construction, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
As shown in the drawing, a pair of curved fingers is provided to grasp or be clamped about a bar, post, column or support to which it is desired to attach decorations, such as flags, etc. These fingers 1 and 2 each consist of a single wire bent into the form of a loop and curved in the direction oi their length so that they will conform somewhat to the surface of a column or other support and will readily grasp the same when clamped thereto with one of the fingers lying at each side of the support. These fingers are preferably crossed nancent their supported ends so that they may be readily clamped to columns of diiierent sizes and the loop 1 is preferably of less width and length than the loop 2 so that the former may pass through the latter When swung upon its pivotal support. The inner ends of the wires forming each loop are preferably bent at right angles and pass through suitable openings in earsB upon. plate 4. The projecting ends 5 of the Wires are then again bent laterally and curved to engage the plate 4 and form spring arms upon the ends of the fingers l and 2, which A further obj ect spring arms are so arranged as to normally exert a force tending toturn the arms or fingers land 2 toward each other to grasp a support to which it is desired to attach h d ice When the device inp ace upon the support the fingers may be lo ked firm y in engagement therewith to firmly hold the de ice, by means of a l p 6 h ch embraces the fingers and is slidable thereon. By spreading the clamping fingers apart and running the loop on to the Crossed portion he f h ch lie nea e t the plate Sa d loop will hold the fingers in openposition so that the device may be readily placed p po t r col n and'the loop then slipped tothe other side of the point where the fingers cross, when the spring ends of,
the fingers will force them into engagement with the column and hold the .Clevice in place. 7 y
Weld d, r e ed or'o'therwise r gidly secured to the outer face of the plate 4; is a pr g 00p 7 pre er ly formed of sheet metalwith parallel arms 8 and 9 haying circular openings near their ends. Supported between these arms is a ball 10 which is seated in theopenings of the arms and is rotati ely held in place thereby. Tocl'amp the ball between the arms and hold it in any position to which it may be adjusted, a bar 11 is passed through openings in the arms and this bar has an end 12 bent at right angles to engage the outer side of one bar and at its opposite end this bar is provided with a locking lever 13 pivoted thereto and provided with a cam shaped end to engage the outer face of the arm 8. EV turning the cam, the arms 8 and 9 are drawn toward each other and forced into frictional contact 'with the ball 10, firmly clamping the ball in any desired position.
The ball 10 is formed with an integral s cket member 1 c nnec e to one side of the ball by a neck portion 15 and this socket member has a vertical opening 16 therethrough; one end of which opening is formed with converging sidewalls. A clamping mem r 7 is l inthe ope ing 16 by means of a flat spring 18 having ends 19 hooking over the upper and lower ends oi the socket member. When the bar or flag st fi 20 is inserted through the openin i the-socket member it is clamped between the converging end walls of the opening and the clamping member 17, the spring forcing the rod toward the contracted end of the opening and thus rigidly holding the flag stail or other article in place'therein. The spring will yield sufficiently to provide for staffs or rods of different sizes.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made. without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
' lVhat I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, ears on the plate having openings therein, clamping fingers having ends passing through the openings in the ears and bent laterally to engage the plate and form spring ends for operating the fingers, and means on the plate for holding a decorative device.
In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, a pair of op posed clamping fingers pivotally attached to the plate and arranged in crossed relation,
said fingers being curved in the direction of their length beyond the point of. crossing, and means on the plate for holding adecorative device.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, a pair of opposed clamping fingers each formed of a single wire bent into a loop with the ends of the wire pivotally connected to the plate, the loop of one finger being of greater dimensions than the loop of the other finger to permit one finger to swing horizontally through the other, and means on the plate for holding a decorative device.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, having ears, a pair of opposed clamping fingers each formed of a single wire having its ends bent at right angles and extending through openings in the ears and then bent laterally to form spring ends, and means on the plate for holding a decorative device. I
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate having ears provided with holes, a pair of opposed clamping fingers each formed of a single wire bent into the form of a loop with its ends bent at right angles and engaged in the holes in said ears, the loop formed by the wire of one finger being of lesser dimensions than the loop of the other finger, and the loop of lesser dimensions being arranged to extend through the other loop with the fingers in crossed relation, a clamping loop embracing the fingers adjacent their crossing point,
and means on the plate for holding a decorative device.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, opposed clamping fingers on the plate, a U-shaped member attached to the opposite side of the plate and provided with openings in the free ends of its arms, a ball between said arms in engagement with said openings, means engaging the arms to clamp the ball, and means on the ball for holding a decoratire device.
'7. In a device of the character described the combination of a plate, clamping fingers at one side of the plate, a le -shaped member on the opposite side of the plate having parallel spring arms with openings in the ends of the arms, a ball between the arms engaging the openings and a socket member on the ball.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, a pair of opposed cl'amping' bars at one side of the plate, a Ushaped member at the other side of the plate having parallel spring arms formed with openings in their ends, a ball interposed between the arms in engagement with the openings, means for forcing the arms toward each other to clamp the ball and a socket member on the ball.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, clamping arms at one side of the plate, a L -shaped member on the other side of the plate having parallel spring arms provided with openings in their ends, a ball between the arms engaging the openings, a bar engaging one arm and passing through the opposed arm, a cam on the outer end of the bar engaging the adjacent arm to force the arms toward each other and clamp the ball, and means onthc ball for holding a decorative device.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination or a plate, a pair of opposed clamping arms pivotally attached at one side of the plate. a J-shaped member having parallel spring arms attached to the other side of the plate, said arms being formed with openings at their ends, a ball. interposed between the arms and seated in the openings, a socket member on the ball having an opening therethrough, formed with converging end walls, and a spring pressed clamping plate in the opposite end of saidopening.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
