10 iqa-r. trucks and has for its object fthe .p lflopp rjm mdmamch LCELtiOI L This jiwentionf'elates to aside framej for f k M bolster and embracing the inner part of the guiding and locking block. The latter is held in place by a horizontal retaining rod 25 which passes transversely through the locking and guiding block andthe column and also preferably serves as a support for the hangers 26 on which the brake shoes 27 for the wheels are mounted.
On oppositesides of the lower part of the longitudinal slot of each column, the same is provided on its inner side with bearing lugs 28, 28, which engage with the adjacent part of the outer side of the spring plank and hold the latter in the proper position relatively to each other when assembled.
29 represents a bracket secured by rivets 30 or otherwise to the outer side of the spring plank between the bearing lugs 28 and bearing against the upper side of the lower arch bar and provided with a depending lower locking pin 31 which enters the corresponding locking openings of the lower arch bar,
' tie bar and the lower locking socket. At its lower end the lower locking pin is provided with a beveled or inclined face 32 which is adapted to engage the lower inclined face of the companion column.
In assembling the parts of the side frame, the lower arch bar is first placed on the tie bar and then the columns or yokes are placed on these bars about half way between the center line of the journal boxes and the center line of the bolster. WVhile these parts are in this position it is possible to slip the upper arch bar readily into the upper parts of the columns and also to place the spring plank, springs and bolster between the central parts of the upper and lower arch bar. The columns are now driven against oppo site sides of the spring plank, so that the inclined faces of the columns engage with the inclined faces of the lower locking pins and lift the latter and the parts connected therewith and then permit the lower locking pins to drop into the lower locking openings and socket of the lowerlarch bar, tie bar and column. coupled with the spring plank without necessitating jacking up of the latter for this purpose and also permits the several castings to be made nearer to size and'still secure a driving fit between the arch bars and tie bar a a longitudinal bar having a vertical opening, a column provided with a horizontal By this means, the columns are opening which receives said bar and with a vertical socket, a spring plank arranged above said bar, and a locking pin mounted on said plank and projecting through said opening of said bar into the socket thereof.
2. A side frame for car tr cks, comprising a longitudinal bar having a vertical opening, a column provided with a horizontal opening which receives said bar and with a vertical socket, a spring plank arranged above said bar, and a locking pin mounted on said plank and projecting through said opening of said bar into the socket thereof,- said 'pin and column being constructed to produce a wedge action between these parts upon moving the column toward said plank.
3. A side frame for car trucks, comprising a longitudinal bar having a vertical opening, a'column provided with a horizontal opening which receives said bar and with a vertical socket, a spring plank arranged above said bar, and a locking pin mounted on said plank and projecting through said opening of said bar into the socket thereof, said pin and column being provided with cooperating inclined faces which engage with each other upon moving said column toward said plank.
4. A side frame for car trucks, comprising a longitudinal bar having a vertical opening, a column having a horizontal opening which receives said bar, a vertical socket below said bar and an inclined face adjacent to the inner side of said socket, a spring plank arranged above said longitudinal bar, and a bracket secured to the outer side of said plankand provided with a depending opening which receives said bar and with a. vertical ocket, a spring plank arranged above said bar, and a locking pin mounted on said plank and projectingthrough said opening'of said bar into the socket thereof, said pin and column being provided with cooperating inclined faces which engage with each other upon moving said column toward said plank and said column being provided with bearinglugs engaging with the outer side of the spring plank.
6. A side frame having a column provided with a horizontal longitudinal opening, an
upwardly-facing seat at the lower. end of said opening, an upwardly-opening locking socket arranged on said seat, and an inclined face adjacent to the inner side of said seat, a tie bar arranged in said horizontal opening and resting on said seat and having a locking opening in line with said locking socket, a lower arch bar arranged in said the longitudinal opening of said column and; secured to the outer side of said spring plank Copies of this patent may be obtained for'five cents eaeh,'by addressing the Commissioner of Patentsk V i and having a depending locking pin ar.
ranged in said locking openings and socket and provided with an'inclined face at its lower end which is adapted to engage the inclined face of the column upon moving the latter toward said plank. V CLIFTON W. SHERMAN;
