2ND am FASTENERL APPUCAHQN FILED JUNE 16 I917.

To all whom it may concern.
Be'it known that I, JOHN D..Moarrz, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Remsen, in the county of Plymouth, State character whereby the end gate will be- I wagon box will be effectively clamped tog of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in end gates and particularly to fastening means therefor. r 7
One object of the present invention isto provide a novel and efiicient device of this firmly held in proper closed position.
Another object is to provide a device of this character whereby the sides of the gether to hold the gate.
Another object is to provide novel means for supporting the gate holding means a ainst dropping down or being disarranged' w ien not in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description whentaken in connection with the accompanying gate and portion of the wagon showing my. 1 mprovedfastening means1n closed positlong Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig.3 is a top plan viewof the same.
Fig. 4 is atop plan View of the'device showing the same in disengaged position.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly tothe accompanying drawing l0represents the side boards of the wagon, having-the cleats 11 for the reception-of thejend gate 12 therebetween, and the bottom represented at 13. Secured to the outer face of each of the side boards is'a plate 14, the rear end of which projects beyond the rear end of the side board. This I projecting end of the plate is formed with a pair of vertically ali-ned slots 15, the por-v tions'of the plate, at the outer sides of said end formed with an enlarged portion 18,.
slots being rolled into tubular form, as shown at 16. y
A pairof elongatedstrips 17 each has one Specification of Letters Patent.

said portion being formed with a pair of tongues 19 which are engaged through the said slots, and then curved to retain them insaid slots, thereby forming a hinge. In the enlarged portion. Of'GflCh of the strips 17 there is formed a vertical slot 20. The
inner ends of the. strips 17 are adaptedto meet in overlapping relation and are formed with horizontal alining slots 21 for the reception of the staple 22 carried by the inter'-' mediate portion of the outer face of the end gate. A pin 23, connected to the gate by means of a short length of chain 24, is"
adapted to be passed through the staple. after the strips 17 havebeen engaged therewith, to hold the parts in proper engagement with the gate and the gate a ainst disengagement from its position V between the cleats and the side boards of the wagon.
Secured to the end gate, adjacent the ends thereof, are the plates 25, each of which is formed with an outwardly extending lug 26 for reception in one of theslots 20 of a strip 17. These lugs, by their engagement with the strips or hasps 17, hold the said hasps 1 in proper position with respect to the sides of the wagon and insure their proper relatlon to each other and to the staple of the end gate when they are to be engaged with said staple. Vhile I have referred to the member 22 as a staple, areference to the drawing will show that said member is more properly an eye-bolt, although a staple 'may be as readily used.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a novel and simple, as well as a cheap device 7 for attachment to a wagon for the purpose of holding the end gate in proper position, while at the same timedrawing together and holding the side boards of the wagon.
On the sides of the wagon, forwardly of;
theend gate, there are mounted theturnbuttons 27 which are adapted to be engaged 4' of the wagon to hold them out of the way.
What is claimed is: The combination with the sideboards and end gate of a wagon, of plates secured to the rear end portions of the side boards, said in the slots 21 of the strips 17 when said strips are swung around against the sides and engaged through the said slots to form hinged connection with the plates, said .105" plates being formed with; slots, elongated f strips having tongues on their innercndsfends, a loop member carried by the end gate, the outer ends of the strips being formed with slots for the reception of said 100p member, and plates secured to the end portions of the gate and formed with outwardly projecting lugs for engagement through the first-named slots of the strips.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN D. MORITZ.
