ilpplicetion i'ied Key 2f' To @ZZ /zoflom if may concern:
e it known that l, Orro THIEME, :i citizen of the United States, residing the city or' St, Louis, State ot' Missouri, have invented :i certain new and useful Improvement in Ribbon-Reversing lilleclmniszn, of which the following is e, i-ull, clear, :ind i Ziet description, such as will enable others sliiled in the nrtto which it epperteins to ineke :ind use the seine, reference lied to the accompanying drawings, forming port or' `this specification, in whichligure is ii plan view of my improved ribbon reversing mechanism.
Fig. 2 is e rear elevational seme.
This invention relates to e new and useful improvement in ribben reversing mecha nism designed especially for use in conneetion with combined adding and typewriting machines and purticunrly in connection with a telly-rell attachment for such niechines disclosed in a companion application executed end liled by me of even date herewith, und serially numbered 98,853.
The object of my present invention is to provide n simple and effective ribbon reversing mechanism which enables he use the entire length of the ribbon and :is the ribbon becomes exhausted from one spoel, the winding` mechanism therefor will be automatically reversed whereby the ribbon will be wound on the empty spool.
In the companion application referred to, the parts of the :hiding niechzniiszn are motor driven and therefore there is ample power to operate the port-s of my reversing mechanism.
While my present improvement muy be useful in connection with t'vpewriting inechines, wherein power, derived from manie elly operated kei7 pressure. is relied upon to operate the ribbon reversing mechanism, do not recommend its use in such machines because when the ribbon becomes exhausted from one spool, :md the reverse mechanism is brought into ploy. the power necessary to operate it, beingappreciable, will be felt by the operator, and might constitute n disturhing element in the operation ot' the rnfichine ln the drmvings 593 indicates a. rock erro. which is vibrnted by suitable power operated means :1nd by virtue of this vibration and puwl and ratchet mechanism operated thereby, the shaft 599 of Letters Patent.
iew the mounted in suitableA Serie Efo.
bearings ceused 'to be rotated short distance et each vibration of the er l 593Nto effect a feeding action of the ink ribbon.
GOO indicates inl: ribbon which, as shown in Fig. l, is designed to be wound upon spools Gill. Each ci" these spools has :i miter 602 connected thereto with which miter gears 603 ere designed to elternzitelv engage, depending upon the direc tion ot' iced. of the ribbon-the ribbon being teken up or wound upon the spool which is being` driven. The shaft 599, before referred to, is ot such length that when one of these vgears (S03 is on' driving engagement with one spool. the other of said @gears is out or@ driving engagement, :ind vice verse.. Esch 'of the ribbon spools G01. hes n hollow core formed in portby e. .fixed curved woll i304, to which the ends of the ribbon inc v be secured. and a movable well 605. the bitter being iiivoted et one end sind connected to e spring 60G which tends to open seid woll, :is shown et the right in l. The free end of this swinging well carries a pin 607 which extends down through e curved slot in the bottom spool heed. ln the i'iosition of the pints shown in l, the pin GO? has been permitted Ato move outwnrdl'v, int-o the path of e hook on the end of o sliding' ber 603. Up to 'this time, the spool :it the righthond end, in Fig. l, has been positively drive und exhaustion from the spool et the letdmnd side of smid ligure has permitted the outward swinging of the removable wall and the location of the pin in 'front of the hook. The continued rotation of the left- Y hand spool in the direction of the the drawing olf of the ribbon, will cerise the pin G07 to slide the ber 60S leftwerdlv, moving' the pinion 603 out of Y i nient with the right-hand spool and the pinion G03, at the left, inte engngeme" wit" the spool et the left. The spool :it the now becomes the driven spool :ind in wine;ling up the ribbon thereon, its rotation will. be reversed from `that indicated the arrow und the ribbon will in due course fold in the movable well so :is to locate the pin G07 out of the path of the hook on the end of the bnr G08. The ber GOS has n hooi: on its opposite end and the spool :it the right side of Fig. l has n fixed and moviiiile'wiill, above described. The bnr (10S bes an upward extension carrying two collars 609 en the framing of the machine is` arrow, by.
driving engage slidingly mounted onhthesheft 599. Be-
tween these collars and members exed te the shei't are springs 610, one o' seidesprings being interposed between each collar and.
fixed member of the shaft. The purpose of this yielding connection is to telre care of any cogging of the teeth between gears 693 and 602. lf the gears are eogged, that 1s,
not brought into proper registration vvhen the bar 608 is moved, one of the springs 6l() will be compressed until by the next rote.- tion of the shaft 559, the teeth of the gears are brought into proper mesh.
There is a centering device for holding the shaft 599 in its two positions, this consisting of the ber Gil, having a roller on.
'suitable guides over the type in the printingn line on the type segments 561.
in Patent No. 996,164, dated ,lune 2'4", i911, granted upon un application tiled by me, will be found e ribbon reversing meche- .nism on which this is intended as un improvement in so' fer as the present `device has e :fewer number of ports and is more simple in its construction end operation.
meneer.
lin the present device, the shaft 599 slides in its bearings aishort distance and in this wey the clutches shown inthe former patent are dispensed with.
I claim:
In a. device of the c zheracterA described, a ribbon reversin and rewinding mechanism comprising e r1 bon reel mounted on each side of the machine, said reel having cores, :i shaft' extending between the reels and designed to alternately engage and drive said reels, Ineens for holding said shaft in different positions, and e shaft shifting mech- :mism4 comprising movable spring held sections constituting parts of the Wells of theA reel cores, the free edges of seid see tions4 having lateral projections extending through slots in the reel-Walls, and a sliding bar having hooks or shoulders at ,each end adapted to be engaged and operated by seid lateral projections when the movable sections of the core are swung outwardly by thein springs respectively when e reel is un wound.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence/of two Witnesses, this 11th dey .of May, 1916.
