Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. February 5, 1917. Serial no. 146,623.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB J. ULRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Painting-Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in centrifugal painting machines, the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved machine of this class which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and etiicient in use.
The further object of the invention is the provision of an improved removably mounted paint receiving and containing receptacle together with an axially located vertical movable spindle normally in engagement with and driven by a driving shaft, said spindle being provided with an article supporting head orspider normally carried above the painting or varnishing liquid within the receptacle and adapted to be depressed and submerged within such liquid as the spindle is depressed out of gear by the improved spindle support and actuating mechanism hereinafter referred to.
A still further object is the provision of an improved spring resisted spindle support normally holding the spindle in driving engagement with the driving shaft while the article or article carrying basket on the article supporting head is being revolved above the liquid within the receptacle for freeing the same of all excess painting or varnishing material covering the same after being previously dipped or submerged, together with improved means for depressing and elevating said spindle support and the spindle and article supporting head carried thereby.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of improved spindle supporting and actuating mechanism for use in connection with the improved machine.
\Vith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings. and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The supporting frame is preferably pros vided with a top or platform'2, adapted to receive and carry the liquid or paint receiving and containing receptacle 3, hereinafter described.
The liquid or paint receiving and containingreceptacle 8, is preferably of cylindrical form as shown, and is provided with an axially located vertically extended tube,.l.
The tube 4, extends upwardly from an opening 4 in the bottom of the receptacle" and to a height above the maximum height of the liquid 3*, carried within the receptacle 3, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
The receptacle 3, is removably mounted upon the platform 2, and is secured thereon by means of a. plurality of clamping bolts 5,
extending through suitable openings 3*, in the platform and being adapted to be clamped thereon by means of nuts 5*, theup per ends of the clamp bolts 5, being provided with hooks 5, taking over and en gaging with the uppermarginal or beaded edge 3 of the liquid receptacle.
The spindle 6, extends through the opening 41, and tube 1, and is carried in suitable bearings 7, carried on suitable intermediate members of the supporting frame. Thg spindle 6, is provided with a bevel gear 6, and is vertically movable through the medium of suitable spindle operating mechanism hereinafter described and for the purposes herein mentioned.
As a means of properly supporting the article or articles to be treated or painted onthe spindle 6, the latter is provided with an article supporting head 8, consisting, in
the present instance, of a spider head made up of a plurality of vertically extending bars 8*, spaced from the spindle 6, to form an annular opening or recess 8", and terminating at their lower ends in horizontal members carrying anchor pins 8. Asa means of removably carrying and supporting the article supporting head 8, upon the top of the spindle 6, the latter is preferably provided with a threaded portion 6, extending through an opening in the head 8, and being provided with a winged nut 6 and a washer or collar 6, for holding the supporting head in proper position. The bars '8, and anchor 8 of the spider head are particularly adapted to receive and support the central or hub portion of any round or circular article to be painted, such for example,as a vehicle wheel, or similar article, the bars 8, being adapted to extend through the spindle opening in the hub portion of the wheel and the anchor pins 8, to engage therewith, or between the spokes of a wheel in the latter instance. The article supporting head may also include therewith a basket 8, of suitable foraminous material, in the present instance, wire, this basket being particularly designed and adapted to contain small articles to be treated or painted in the improved machine, said basket being provided with an axial tube or hub member S adapted to pass over the vertical bars 8 of the supporting spider or head and to be secured against relative circumferential movement on the spindle 6, by means of the anchor pins 8, and as a means of properly supporting and holding the articles within the basket 8 the latter is provided with a follower cover 8, having an opening toreceive and contain the tubular member 8", and as a means of holding the follower cover down in proper position a collar 8 is carried above the top 8, and provided with a plurality of pivotally mounted follower arms 8*, and as a means of securing the basket 8, and collar 8 in proper position, the winged nut 6. may be utilized, together with a washer of similar form but larger in diameter (not shown) operating in an obvious manner.
Thejertically movable spindle is adapted to be driven while in its elevated or normal position, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1- and 2 of the drawings, by means of a driving shaft 9, provided with a bevel gear 9,
meshing with the bevel gear 6 said driving any suitable and convenient source of power.)
As a means of supporting and vertically moving or actuating the spindle 6, whereby the bevel gear 6 may be moved out of gear or connection with the gear 9 and the article carried thereby into the, liquid or paint within the receptacle 3, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and whereby upon the release of pressure upon the operating mechanismsaidspindle and the article carried thereby will return to the original or elevated position and the spindle will be thrown into gear with the driving shaft 9, for freeing the article of all excess paint or liquid material through the action of centrifugal force, and thereby 7 also distributing the painting material uniformly over the article being treated, the lower end of the spindle is connected to and carried by a spring resisted support or cross member 13, through the medium of a bearing cup or member lat, (see Fig. 7,) the bearing cup being provided with a screw or bolt 11 extending into an annular groove, 6 in the lower end of the spindle, for detachably engaging the latter. The ends of the cross member or spindle support 13, are adapted to travel in guide grooves 1 formed by guide members in the side of the supporting frame, and'as a means of operating said cross member the latter is provided with a vertically extending rack 15, the lower end of the rack terminating in attaching arms 15, (see Figs. 6 and 8, of the drawings) attached to the cross member 13. As a means vertically guiding the rack 15, the latter is provided on its inner side with a groove or guide way, receiving and containing a vertically extending guide member 16.
As a means of operating the rack 15, a segmental gear 17 is mounted on a rock shaft 18, the latter being mounted in suitable bearings 18 at opposite sides of the frame, said rock shaft, in the present instance, being provided at one end with a crank arm or lever 19, connected to a link 20, said link being connected to a foot lever 21, mounted, in the present instance, at one side of the frame and pivotally connected at one end to the frame through the medium of a bearing bolt 22, connected in a porting or cross member 13 in an elevated position as well as resisting the action of the depression or actuation of the operating mechanism and thereby returning the support together with the vertically movable spindle to its elevated or normal position with its gear 6 in mesh with the gear 9*, of the driving shaft, the cross member 13, is provided with a pair of coiled, expansion springs 23, connected to the upper intermediate portion of the supporting frame and operating in an obvious manner for the purposes above mentioned.
By reasons of the above described construction it will be understood that when the spindle 6, and article supporting head 8, are depressed to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 7, of the drawings, the article carried by the article supporting head 8, (or the articles carried within the basket 8, when the latter is used) will be dipped or submerged in the liquid or paint material while the spindle gear 6, is out of the mesh with the gear 9 of the driving shaft and that immediately upon the release of pressure on the foot lever 21, the springs 23, will return, the support or cross member 13, and the spindle 6, and the parts carried thereby to their normal or elevated position (see Fig. 1) and the spindle in its revolution carrying the clipped article will cause the latter through centrifugal force to be cleared of any excess painting material clinging thereto as well as leave a uniform coating on the article, it being obvious that any material driven from the revolving article through centrifugal force and striking the surrounding walls of the receptacle will pass down into the supply of liquid treating material or paint.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be .made, or all the modes of its use, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a centrifugal machine, a spindle, an article supporting basket, a follower cover therein, and pivoted follower arms resting on said cover.
2. In a centrifugal machine, a vertically movable spindle, an article supporting basket, a follower cover therein, and pivoted followers resting on said cover.
3. In a centrifugal painting machine, avertically movable supporting head having anchor projections, a basket mounted on said head and engaged by said anchor projections to prevent relative circumferential Copies of this patent may be obtained for movement, a follower cover for said basket, and means for adjustably holding and removably securing said parts in position.
4. In a centrifugal machine, a vertically movable spindle, an article supporting basket removably mounted thereon, a follower cover therefor, and follower members adapted to hold said cover in various vertically adjusted positions.
5. In a centrifugal machine, a vertically movable spindle, an article supporting basket having an axial tube removably mounted thereon, a follower cover therefor, and a collar removably mounted above said tube having pivoted follower lever arms adapted to hold said cover in adjusted position.
6. In a centrifugal painting machine, a stationary cylindrical liquid receptacle provided with an axially located vertically extended tube, means for removably securing said receptacle in position and a vertically movable spindle extending through the latter and provided with a removable article supporting head adapted to take over and surround said tube, said head having anchor members to prevent relative circumferential movements between said head and the article being supported.
7. A centrifugal painting machine, comprising a frame, a detachably mounted cylindrical receptacle provided with an axial tube, a vertically movable spindle provided with a supporting head axially located in said receptacle, said head being provided with article engaging anchor pins, a driving shaft engaging and driving said spindle when in an elevated position, and a spring resisted support normally supporting said spindle in an elevated position and in driving engagement with said driving shaft.
8. A centrifugal painting machine, comprising a supporting frame, a stationary receptacle thereon, means for removably and detachably securing the latter on said frame independently of the other working parts, an axially movable spindle extending vertically therethrough and having article engaging projections, a driving shaft, a spring resisted spindle support normally holding said spindle in engagement with said driving shaft, and means connected to said spindle support for depressing the latter and said spindle whereby said spindle is depfi'eised out of engagement with said driving s a t.
