Be it know-n that:y I, LA VERNE Norns, citizenoffthefUnited States, residing at Chicago, inithet county ofY Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement? in Pawl-and-Ratchet Mechanism, ofrwhich the vfollowingis a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to ratchet wheels and their controllingmechanism.
As I have preferablyL practised my invenf tion, the ratchety actuating mechanism is electro-mechanical, embracing; an electro-magnet for storing pawl actuating power and for placingthe pawlin position-to operate upon theratchet, ,andfa spring in which theactuating power is stored and servingto actuate thepawl'upon denergization of the magnet; Infsuch an arrangement thepawl cannot be=positioned bythe magnet to turn the ratchet untilgthe magnet has been suiliciently energized fully;` toi attract its armature so that the=pawli cannot functiontovturn the ratchet; upon mere partialy energization of the magnet andthe consequent mere partial movement ofits; armature. Tfhezpawl mechanism'desirablyfincludes'a device to prevent the.actuated.ratchet-from creeping in either directiomthis devicebeing preferably a toe formationiupon` the pawl that enters a recess at the base of .the engagedratchettooth. Thepawlv also carriesor is united with a holding dog also to obstruct creeping of the ratchet' andY operating to'. prevent momentum ofthe pawl and ratchetorother force fromfcarrying-the ratchet beyond the position in which the pawl is to push it.
I will explain my invention morefullyby reference to the accompanying drawingh showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a View illustrating the relative positions of the parts of my device when the magnet is denergized; Fig. 2 is a view illustrating a relative position of the parts when the magnet is fully energized and its armature structure has been fully attracted; and `Fig. 3 is a view on a larger scale illustrating details of construction.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The ratchet wheel l has teeth 2 whose faces 3 are on radii of the Wheel. and are engaged by the pawl 4 to move the wheel Step by step. The pawl is carried upon a Specification of Letters Patent.

stem 5 that. operates through an opening 6 formed in a post 7 that projects fromthe mountingS on which the wheel is mounted to turn. The base 9 of the stem is linked to the overlapping ends of the armatures l0. The stem base 9 carries a stud Il which is surrounded by one end of a compression spring 12 which bears upon the adjacent end of the stem base. The other end of the springl is. anchored to a post at 13 carried by the mounting board or plate 14C that supports the spools 15 of the electro-magnet and their armatures 10.
When the magnet is fully energized its armature structureA assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. In assuming this position the armatures compressspring i to store pawl actuating power therein. When the magnet is` denergized the spring distends and` places the parts in the positionshown in Fig. l. When the armaturestructure is fully attracted, the pawl rides over the crown of afresh tooth and drops before the radialrface of this tooth and upon the slopingk face of;r the next tooth, results that do not occur unless the magnet is fully energized. When the compression` spring expandsrto give up the pawl actuating power stored therein by the magnet, it presses upon the stem ofthe pawl and forcesthe outer end of the pawl against the radial face of thel fresh tooth before which the pawl has been positioned, the movement having been sufficient, in the construction as illustrated, to turnthe ratchet wheel just one tooth.
The pawl stem also carries or is united with a holding dog 16 that is so fixed with respect toor connected with the paw-l as to be presented to the sloping face of another fresh tooth on the opposite side of the wheel from the pawl engaged tooth, the dog being engaged by the opposing' tooth of the wheel when the wheel has been pushed one tooth space by the pawl, whereby the wheel cannot be carried by its momentum and the momentum of the pawl beyond the tooth space through which the pawl pushes it, the dog also obstructing movement.l
l/Vhen the pawl is brought to rest, the tooth that the pawl pushed upon remains in engagement with the pawl to prevent the ratchet wheel from creeping backward. The pawl also drops into engagement with the ratchet wheel to prevent said wheel from creeping forward. This latter engagement is desirably aiiorded by means of a toe 16 that is receivable in the recess or notch 17 that is provided at the base of each tooth between its radial face and the sloping face of the next tooth. lVhen the pawl is moved to position to engage a fresh tooth the toe, which is beveled on its under side, easily rides out of the notch.
Vhile I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. The combination with a ratchet wheel; of a pawl adapted to push upon the teeth of the ratchet wheel to turn said wheel; a spring for operating the pawl; an electromagnet operating, when energized, to store pawl operating power in said spring and to place the pawl in position to push upon a fresh tooth of the wheel; and a holding dog united with the pawl to move therewith and serving to be engaged by the ratchet to obstruct movement of the ratchet, said pawl and wheel having interengaging formations that prevent the wheel from creeping forward.
2. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl and wheel having interengaging formations that prevent the wheel from creeping forward.
3. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl having a toe and said ratchet wheel having recesses at the bases of its teeth, one receiving said toe when the pawl has moved the ratchet wheel, to prevent the ratchet wheel from creeping.
4. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl having a toe and said ratchet wheel Copies ot this patent may be obtained for five cents having recesses, one receiving said toe when the pawl has moved the ratchet wheel, to prevent the ratchet wheel from creeping.
5. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl and wheel having interengaging formations that prevent the wheel from creeping forward; and a holding dog united with the pawl to move therewith and serving to be engaged by a fresh tooth when the pawl iinishes its movement of the ratchet to obstruct movements of the ratchet.
6. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl and wheel having interengaging formations that prevent t e wheel from creeping forward; and a holding dog united with the pawl to move therewith and serving to be engaged by the ratchet when the pawl finishes its movement of the ratchet to obstruct movement of the ratchet.
7 A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, Said pawl having a toc and said ratchet wheel having recesses at the bases of its teeth, one receiving said toey when the pawl has moved the ratchet wheel, to prevent the ratchet wheel from creeping; and a holdin dog united with the pawl to move therewit and serving to be engaged by a fresh tooth when the pawl finishes its movement of the ratchet to obstruct movement of the ratchet.
8. A ratchet wheel, in combination with a pawl for operating the ratchet wheel, said pawl having a toe and said ratchet Wheel having recesses, one receiving said toe when the pawl has moved the ratchet wheel, to prevent the ratchet wheel from creeping; and a holding dog united with the pawl to move therewlth and serving to be engaged by a fresh tooth when the pawl finishes its movement of the ratchet to obstruct move ment of the ratchet.
