SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 191 '7.
Application led July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,062.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEAVEN A. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Argenta, county of Pulaski, and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, and has for its object the production of a pipe of this, character which will be adapted to afford a cool and pleasant smoke to the user.
A further object is the production of a smoking pipe which will be of simple and economical construction.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
'lhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompiiiying drawings forming a part of this specincation, and in which,
Figure l is a central section of a pipe embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan viev.v thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line mm of F ig. l.
rl`he preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a bowl l from the lower portion of which leads a tubular steni '2 of conventional construction. lThe bottoni of the bowl l is provided with a removable closure 3 and secured in said bowl, intermediate the ends thereof, is a forarninated false bottoni 4f preferably of wire mesh.
Arranged below the member 4 is an angular partition 5 consisting of a central longitudinally extending portion and a transversely extending portion, the latterbeing adapted to close olf one-half of the lower portion of the bowl, as will be readily understood. Formed in the lower edge of the vertically extending portion of the partition is a plurality of notches or openings G through which the smoke is adapted t0 pass from one side of said portion of said partition to the other. |The arrangement is such that the stem 2 communicates with the portion of the bowl which is closed off by the transversely extending portion of the partition, as seen.
TW ith this arrangement, it will be seen, that a toituous smoke passage is formed in the lower portion of the bowl, the course o f the smoke being downwardly at the open side of the partition, thence through the opening 6 to the other side of the partition, and tlieiioe upwardly and out through the passage in stem 2. Arranged in the tortuous passage thus formed are pieces of cotton or otliei suitable absorbent material 7 which are adapted to collect nicotin or other impurities with which the smoke is laden, so as to insure a cool, mild smoke in the use of the pipe. 1vVhen desired, the pieces of absorbent material may be removed, and replaced with fresh ones by simply removing the closure 3.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A smoking pipe comprising a bowl; a tubular stem leading from said bowl; an angular partition in said bowl forming a tortuous smoke passage in the lower portion of said bowl. said partition consisting of a central longitudinally.extending portion and a transversely extending upper end portion closing o one side of the lower portion of said bowl, the lower edge of said longitudinally extending portion of said partition being provided with an opening, said stein communicating with the lower portion of said bowl at the side thereof closed by said transversely extending portion of said partition; an absorbent element arranged in said passage; a removable cloname to this specification in the presence of sure at the bottom of said bowl tliough t-Wo subscribing witnesses. which said absorbent element may e le- T moved; .and aforaminadted falsebottomin STEAVEB A' CARTER' said bo'Wl above said partition, Substantially fitnesfsg Y *Y as described. A ,Y .Y V10s. SHELLAN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my E. C. ABLES.
