To all whom it may Be it known that which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire stretchers.
An object of the invention is the provision of a wire stretcher which can be applied to a post of usual construction and can be so operated as to tighten the wirewhereby it can be stretched and tacked to the post in said tightened or stretched position. i
Another object of the invention is the pro which maybe used as a wire tightener in the middle of a fence and left there in position so the wire may be stretched at any future time. For this reason the crank is detachable making it possible to have two or morestretchers and only one crank. 1
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pivotedmeans for engaging the post and locking the wire against loosening after it has been stretched to the desired tension.
A further obj prove and simplify ect of the invention is to im- Fig. 4C is a detail perspective view of thebar;
Fig. operating crank, and
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing the locking arm.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wire stretchers, 'render-' 111g them comparatlvely simple and 1neXpen- 5 is a detail perspective view of the by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 7 designates a post to which the wire 8 is to be fastened after it is stretched to the desired tension.
Ihe wire stretcher is shown in general at 9 and consists of a body or bar 10 having a slot 11 formed therein with an offset end opening 12 through which the wire to be stretched is insertedinto the slot 11." One end of the bar 10 is notched as at 13 and in: i this notch is pivoted a locking arm 14:
adapted when in the dotted line positions shown in Figs. 2 and 6 to permit the rotation of the bar 10 by a suitable operating crank 15 and when in the full line position shown in these two figures, to lockthe bar 10 against rotation. 1
A suitable shoulder 16 is provided atthe lower endof the notch 13 which limits the v outward. movement of the arm lfpreventmg it from becomlng engaged with the post .7 during the operation of the device;
In use the bar 10 is placed with one side against the post and the wire stretched across the latter and is brought into engagement with the notch 11.. As the bar 10 is rotated the wire 8 will be wound upon the bar 10 until it reaches a sufficient tension after whichit istacked to the post 7 and the wire then disengaged from the notch or slot 11 permitting the device tobe removed and positioned adjacent the next desired post. I
From the foregoing description takenin connection with the accomp anying drawings it will bemanifest that a wire stretcher is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent'is:
1. In a wire stretcher, the combination of a rotatable bar, having a slot therein for receiving a strand of wire, a detachable crank for rotating said bar, and an arm pivoted to I the end of said bar for locking the same against rotation. v
2. The combinationin a wire stretcher, of a rotatable bar adapted to engage one side of a fastened post, a slot formed in said bar for receiving a strand of wire, a notch openswung into the path of the 7 I H gagement therewith and locking the bar.
bar and permitting the insertion of the strand of wire thereinto, afldetaehahle crank adapted to engagewone end of thehar for rotating the latter apivoted arm attached to one end of the bar and adapted to be post for Yene and means for limiting the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presen Witnesses ce of two Witnesses.
