From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable magazine ttash m fo -.fi ea s h s e P w ed the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however,

that slight changes in the minor details of construction maybe made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended 3 Iclaim as my invention:

1. In a device of the character described,

[the combination with a breech mechanism a y a v a permit the said breech bolt to slide through including a sliding breech bolt, of a car tridge magazine having a plurality of cartridges arranged therein and mounted to the magazine to force one of the cartridges K magazine, and a loading lever engageable by the said breech bolt and adapted to swing the combination with a breech mechanism including a breech bolt and a firing chamout of the said chamber, means mounted upon the sliding bolt to retain a hold on the cartridge to withdraw the same intowthe for forcingone of the cartridges into the space evacuated by the said bolt.

2. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith a breech mechanism including a breech bolt and a firing chamber, of a cartridge magazine secured in position to Dermit the breech bolt to slide therethrough when the said breech bolt is reciprocated, means carried by the breech bolt to engage the empty cartridge for withdrawing the same from the firing chamber into the said magazine, and means ada ted to be actuated by the rearward sliding movement of the breech bolt for forcing a fresh cartridge into position in the space evacuated by the breech bolt and causing the said fresh cartridge to force the said empty cartridge from the firing chamber downwardly in the said magazine.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a breech mechanism including a breech bolt and a firing chamber, of a cartridge magazine mounted in position to permit the breech bolt to slide through the magazine, the said magazine being provided with means to form a passage way through which cartridges may be moved, an extracting lever carried by the bolt and adapted to retain a hold on the cartridge forced from the magazine by the bolt so that the discharged cartridge in the firing chamber may be withdrawn therefrom into the said magazine, and means adapted to be actuated by the said sliding bolt and extending into the magazine to engage a fresh cartridge to force the latter into alinement with the said bolt and to force the empty cartridge downwardly into the said magazine, the said means including a curved lip adapted to fit the curve of the cartridge, the said magazine having a convenient opening to permit the said lip to extend into the magazine to engage the cartridge.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a breech mechanism including a sliding breech bolt and a firing chamber, of a cartridge magazine mounted to permit the sliding bolt to pass therethrough to force a cartridge into the said chamber, means carried by the bolt to extract the empty cartridge from the chamher, a loading lever pivotallv mounted and adapted to be actuated by the said sliding bolt to force the empty cartridge out of alinement with the bolt and to move a fresh 7;: 1 1 deivib, f mg-0mm; deserniga,
