' Inventor;
AXEL I-I. ENGLUND, or PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA,;ASSIGNOR T0 nLEo'rnIo' SERVICE SUPPLIESCOMPANY, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, 'A CORPORA TION' OF PENNSYLVANIA.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, AxnL H. ENGLUND, a CitlZGIl'Of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadel-' phia, andState of Pennsylvania, havein vented" an Improved Electric Switch, of which the following is a specification; I
My invention is an electric switch' de' signed primarily for controllingthe current in a trolley circuit, but it will be understood that it is'adapted for general use. I
In trolley systems, particularly in mines,
it is frequently desirable to open the Circuit, or cut out a section, as where the use of a branch is temporarily discontinued, or it is necessary to carryon operations rendered dangerous or inconvenient by the presence of a charged conductor, and my invention provides improved mechanism adapted for such purpose. p g
My improved mechanism, in its preferred form'for use as a trolley cut out, comprisesa pair'of terminals having means for detachable connection with ends of trolley wire sections and for engaging an oscillatory conductor, a pair of non-conducting bars connecting the terminals, a yoke fixed to the bars, a'hanger connected with the yoke,'a switch blade fulcrumed by means of the yoke, an arm for rocking the blade, and a spring for holding the blade disengaged from the terminals. It will be understood, however, that the device may be modified, for instance by the meansshown for positively locking the bladein its openedrelation, and that the invention may be variously embodied within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 Jis-a plan view illustrating a form of my invention;. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectionalview taken on the line 33 of Fig; 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a section of the device illustrating its combination with disengaged means for positively; holding the blade in its openposition; Fig; 5-is a view similar to that of Fig. 4 with the bladepositively fixed; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken I Specification of Letters iatenti ELECTRIC swIToH. on=the line 6 6 of-Fig. 4; and Fig. 7" is "a sectional 'v-iew taken on the line 7,7 of Fig.4.; s I The deviee,inthe form thereofilli'lstrated inthe drawings, comprises the terminals and 1 provided" with the respective sockets 2i and 2-- for receiving the ends of the conductors 3 and 3, and the respective set screws 4 and 4 for fixing such ends in place: The-terminals are further provided with the respective pairs of sockets 5 and 5,l0cated on oppositesides'of the respective sockets 2 and 2, for receiving the ends of the non conducting bars 6 and 6" whichare fixed in position by screws 7 and 7 p A yoke 8 is provided with bifurcations'Q and 9 through which the respective bars6 and 6 pass, the yoke being held on the me dian sections of the bars by screws 10 and 10. The yoke is further provided, in its arched top 11, with a socket 12 in which is screwed a hangerfor suspension rod13 for supporting the device, andthe bifurcations 9 and 9 are provided with the bearings 14 and 14 in-which is journaled the shaft 15. This shaft has the switch blade 16 fixed thereon, between the bifurcations 9 and 9, for connecting the terminals 1; and 1, the latter being provided withthe respective 'wipes l7 and 17. for frictionally'engaging the resp'ectiveends of the blade.
A handle 18, forrocking the shaft 15,is provided witha socket 19 whichis engaged on an end of the shaft by a set screw 20. The socket 19 'has,on its inner end,a peripheral flange 21 divided by the'notche's 22; the yoke 8' has, on its bearing 14, a flange 23 provided with: a notch 24, and a spring 25, coiled around the shaft 15, has its laterally turned ends 26 and 27' engaged in respective notches 22 and 24. The several notches 22 permit different engagements ofthe springs end 26 to vary the tension of the spring, which supplements the weight of the arm 18 and tends to hold the disengaged ends of the blades out of engagement with the wipes 17 and 17.
Binding posts 28 and 28- on the respective terminals adapt. them for ready connection Cir with branch conductors, and eyes 29 and 29 in the terminals provide means for convenient connection of guys. a
As illustrated in Figs. 4; to 7 inclusive, the handle 18 contains an aperture 30 through which passes a longitudinally movable bolt 31 having ahead 32 adaptedto engage the handle; the flange 21- contains an aperture 33 through which the bolt is movable, and the flange 23 contains an aperture or notch 34 into which the end of the bolt is movable.
'-A coiled spring 35 is disposed on the bolt 31, between a collar 36 fixed thereon andthe flange 21, to retract the bolt and hold it normallyout of engagement with the flange 23, theibolt being pushed forward against the action of the spring and held in engagement with the flange byfa usual form of padlock 37 havingabow 38 which passes through the aperture39of the bolt. i The open switch blade 16 stands normally with the lug 16 thereon in engagement with the crown'll of the yoke, in which position the bladeis electrically separated from both terminals land 1. The frictional engagement between the ends of the blade and the sockets or wipes, 17 and 17 of the terminals is broken by pulling down the handle 18, theadjustable spring 25 providing means for applying the'desired force'to the blade to keep itopen against undesired closure. When it is desired to lock the switch blade open, to insure a continuing open circuit, the bolt 31 is locked "in engagement with the flange23, c I
Having described my invention, I claim: 1.,In mechanism of the character described, the combination of a pair of terminals, non-conducting means connecting said terminals, a yoke connected with said means, andafulcrumed conducting blade connected with said yoke so asto coact with said terminalsand insulated by said means from said terminals, said blade when open being disengaged from both terminals and when closed engaging both terminals to electrically connect them' and provide a track for a trolley. t 3 J t a 2.
