Specification of Letters Patent. Pat ented oti go;
A Application filed July 29,1916. Serial No. 112,025.
To ally whom it may c Be it known that I, ALBERT REnnLn THOM- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilantsville, in the county of .Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented oer- 1tain new anduseful Improvements in Pickv V axes, of whichthe following is a specificawherein the bits arejr-emovably connected.
tion. V Y
My invention relatesto improvementsin pickaxes, and particularly to the type to the body portion .and the object ofmy improvement ,is to provide lockin'gmeans for preventing the accidental and unintentional removal of the bits.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pickax. p
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
tion.
Fig. 4 is a similar view ofone of members. 1
Fig. 5 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale of the body portion and parts of the two bit members.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view corresponding to Fig. 6, showing a modification of the looking device.
My improved pickax comprises a body portion 10 provided with a handle aperture 11 in which is housed one end of the handle 12, and a pair of bit portions 13 that extend outwardly from the body portion 10 on opon the line a; a;
posite sides of the handles 12 in the usual manner for pickaxes.
The bit portion 13 is part of a bit member 15, the inner end of which is in the form of a head 16 of tapered form that fits in a correspondingly tapered socket 17 in the body portion 10. Y
The socket 17 is provided in a lateral branch 18 of the body portion 10, and the said branch 18 is provided with a slot 19 extending through the two opposite faces thereof, and directed longitudinally, for receiving a wedge for the purpose of driving out the tool or bit member 15 when it is desired to remove the same, and as is usual in devices of the kind shown and described.
The tapered form of the head 16 and the socket 17 serves generally to hold the bit member 15 connected to the body portion 10. In special cases however and under severe Fig.3 is aside elevationof the body'por- -16of the bit member 15, and also through the samein place, and such lockingmeans I provide in the followlng mannerg-j-fi 2 conditions I ofv use ffind vide special locking means for locking the bit member in place so as topositively hold On one-face of'the branch 18 alongfthe of teeth 20 that serves as, the locking means so far as the body'portion is concerned. 5
On the bit member 15 I provide locking 22 onthe-lower sidelfor engaginglwithflthe ,teeth 20, andhaving ahjole 23 that isafit for the bolt 24. -;;.The said bolt 24L, asv shown} has the bolt head 25. on theflf'acejof the branch 18. opposite that having-the teeth 20,
bridging the slot 19, the body portion fitting and passing through a hole 26' in", the head the hole 23 in the dog 21, and has a wing nut 27 mounted on the threaded end, and interposed between the said wing nut 27 and the dog 21 is a spring washer 28.
By using the spring washer 28 as described means are provided for permitting the dog 21 to slide along over the teeth 20 as the head 16 is driven farther into the socket 17 and at the same time the wing nut 27 can be tightened snugly against the spring washer 28 so that the teeth 22 of the dog will be in firm contact with the teeth 20 of the body portion 10, and will positively prevent the removal of the bit member 15 while the dog is in the position described.
When it is desired to remove the tool the bolt 24 is removed after which the tool can be driven out by the use of a wedge in the usual manner. 2
In the modification shown in Fig. 7 a construction is provided in which the dog 21 is dispensed with and in lieu thereof the head 25 of the bolt 24? is of special form, suitably to provide teeth 22 on the inner face thereof.
The teeth 20 on the branch 18 that cooperate with the teeth 22 on the bolt 24 are on the side face of the said branch 18 opposed to the head 25 as shown, and the portion 29 of the side face opposed to the spring washer 28 is smooth, suitably to provide a sliding, bearing face for the said spring washer 28. s V
The particular form of the head 25 shown border edges of theslot'19. ,I-provideaset' i comprises a curved recessed form for the inner face 30 oi; the head 25,
The curvature of the faced-3 6 is tr high degree and uniform from edge to edge, leave-1 ing the edge portions 22 at the junction w t ewtw e d, w l 3 of the h f iiZ:
in the'iform of a relatively sharp angle, and of suitable form to serve as teeth in cooporation With the teeth 20 provided on the branch 18 of the body portion 10 In use, asin other style shown and 'described, as the-head is entered-Within the meansare-provided for preventing the return movement of the head without releas I compr singa set 'offixed teeth on thesaid ing'the Wing-nut. I r I clalm as my invention 1. A picka'x comprising a body portion having a tool receiving socket, a'bit member 7 having a head fitting the said-socket the said body portion'having' a slot op ening into the'said' socket, the border'wall of the tion having a; set of teeth, tliesa'id head having a hole in registration With the said said slot on one face of the saidbody p'orslot, locking member having teeth I for co operating ith the said teeth on the body portionand means for 'oper'atively mounting the said locking member on the said head, comprising a bolt passing through the said hole also through the said; slot, and a spring Washer and nut mounted on the said 2. A pickaX comprising a body portion hav ng an elongated,{tapered socketand a removable bit member having a head fitting'the said socket, and a checking device for permittlng a slight inward movement of the said head relatively to the saidsocket' when the said head is positioned in the said socket and positively preventing a return movement thereof, the said checking device body portion, "a dog having teeth for coop- VIVIAN STARK,
