Be it known that I, NANNm D. HENLEY,

a citizen of the United. States, residing-vat Richmond, in the county of Henr co and State of Virginia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Combined Coal- Hods and Ash-Sifters, of which the follow- :ing is a-specification, reference being'had 'to the accompanying drawings. .7 o

The usual or'customary mode of taking out ashes and sifting them is by using a solid bottom hod carrying the ashes therein to a separate receptacle for. sifting. This involves two operations, Lone of putting the ashes into the hod and then dumping them into the ash sifter, which is not economical of either labor orztimev .1 s

This inventlon aims to provlde economical means "for sifting ashes by saving at least one operation in the handling of the ashes.

7 Another object is to provide a device whereby the sifted portions, cinders, un-

burnt and partly burned coals are retained within a hod ready for use again.

A still further object is to provide a hod adapted to sift ashes deposited therein-without the necessity of dumping into any receptacle for separate sifting. Another purpose of the invention is to provide a sifting hod with an ash receiving receptacle removably attached to the lower'portion of the hod, said receptacle forming a convenient means for dumping into the final receiving ash can.

The invention broadly stated comprises a hod provided with a foraminous bottom adapted to be shaken or partly rotated in a horizontal plane, pins projecting inwardly and cooperating with the bottom, a handle, to shake or rotate the bottom and an ash receptacle adapted to cooperate with the lower portions of the hod, said receptacle being provided on one side near the upper or open edge with an inverted T-slot to receive the handle and the bottom of the re Specification of Letters Patent.

' To cooperate with the hod, there is an ash receptacle 11 provided which may be removably attached in any convenient or suitable manner to the hod 5 which, when combined or attached to the hod, forms a separable unit. Near the upper edge of the receptacle there is formed an inverted T-slot 12, which has its longer axis in a horizontal plane. The handle 9 is adapted to be moved within the longer axis in order to shake or properly rotate the foraminous bottom 6. The receptacle 11 maybe formed in any convenient manner or shape, though it is preferred to make it cylindrical and of sufficient height to contain the ashes which may be sifted into it from the hod. The combination with a hod having a movable ash sifting plate constituting the bottom thereof and provided with an operating handle,,of an ash receptacle having means for cooperative engagement by said handle whereby the hod and receptacle are detachably connected to each other.
