The objects of the presentinventiomarei to provide an improved form of rail fastener, which will be simple in construction and durable andy eliicient in operation; to provide a rail fastener which maybe read ily adjusted to tighten the rail; to provide a rail fastenerl having a bolt and a separately formed cam member, with means for locking these parts together; and to provide such an improved form of device as will appear more fully from the following description.
ln the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a rail and tie showing my improved fastener in position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastener;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bolt;
Fig. 5 is a side view showing a modified form of construction; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the cam member shown in Fig. 5.
As illustrated in these drawings, 7 represents an ordinary rail which rests on a tie 8. The bolt 9 passes down through a hole 10 in the tie, and its lower end is provided with a lateral lug or catch 11. The catch passes through a hole 12, which is similar to a keyhole, in a plate 13 which rests against the bottom of the tie 8.
In accordance with my invention, the rail is tightened or pressed against the tie by means of a cam-like member which coacts with the bolt 9. While these parts might in some cases be formed integrally, in the present instance I form them separately for convenience in manufacturing, and also for the purpose of enabling certain adjustments to be made. The bolt 9 is provided with a squared or angular head 14;.for receiving a wrench, and with a flange 15 having a trans verse downwardly extending tongue or key Speccatonlof Letters Patent.

member 1'( extends outwardly beyondy 'the flange 15 and has. a number of grooves-or notches 2O in itsouter periphery for receiving a nail 21, which is used to lock the device after it has been adjusted.
When the fastener is to be applied, the cam member 17 is placed in position on the bolt 9 and the bolt is then inserted with the lug or catch 11 through the hole 12. At this time the thin portion of the cam is in engagement with the rail flange. Then the bolt is turned by means of any ordinary wrench, which engages with the head 1e. As the bolt is turned, the cam presses down on the rail flange until the parts are pressed tightly together. T he nail 21 is then driven into position and holds the fastener against rotation. If the rail becomes loosened, the tightener may be turned to adjust the same for such wear or looseness. The bolts may be made of different lengths and the washers or cam members may be made of different thicknesses so as to permit the fastener being applied for different rails or ties of varying thickness. It will be seen that by means of this arrangement the bolt is of simple construction and may be readily forged, and the separately formed cam member may also be readily formed, and when these members are assembled they will turn together so that the fastener may be adjusted by means of any ordinary track wrench.
In the modified form of construction, shown in Figs. 5 and G, the bolt 22 has a flange 23, with a transverse shoulder 24. The separately formed cam washer 25 is provided with a shoulder 26, which coacts with the shoulder 21 so that the washer will be turned with the bolt.
It will be seen that various modifications may be made in the details of construct-ion of my improved fastener, and therefore l do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described further than is specified in the following claims, in which 1 claim:
Y 16. Thecam member 17 yis provided with j l. In L rail fastener, the eombinntion of :i bolt having a projecting flange, e sepa.- rnteljy' Yformed Cmn'menb'er, 'andli'nezins vfor fastening the cum member to the Hnge 2. n a device of the character set forth, thecombination of ibolt having en angular head Vand having lin outwardly extending flange adjacent to the head, a tongue projecting from said Flange, u eem member littlng over Said boli'J Land having n. groove for receiving said tongue.
'8. 'ln a rail `fastener, the combination of :i bol'hm'ing un outwardly extending head portion, n sepmfnte'ly formed @um member fitting over said bolt, 'and interlocking ineens ier veimeingfthe cum member to turn "with the head portion.
lThe combination with a fastening bolt logies ef hspatent may be obtained for for a, rail, having an outwardly projecting llange adjacent to the head, of a removable locking member having `its lower surface made in the forni of a helicoidal cam and means' 'for fastening the locking member to the flange whereby it will turn with they bolt.
5. Theeonibinaftion of a tie, a plate on the lower surface of the tie, a bolt passing through said tie and having an outwardly extending projection at its upperendfineans for looking the lower end of the bolt ,tothe plete, n rail, a.' cem Wnshermounted on said bolt, having its' anni surface engaging with the rnil'ange, undinterloeling mennsbetween the Washernnd projection whereby Jehe washer will be turned with the bolt.
