CHARLES H. DUNSFORD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DOUBLE-CUTTING-PLANER-TOOL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 10, 1917. Serial No. 147,796.
To all whom it may concern:
FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Gutting-Planer-Tool Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a double-cutting planer tool holder. v
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of tool holders and to provide a double-cutting planer tool holder of simple, strong and inexpensive construction adapted for use on various planer machines and capable of cutting both ways.
-' A further object of the invention is to provide a double-cutting planer tool holder equipped with a pair of pivotally mounted tool blocks adapted to hold a plurality of tools for roughing and capable of enabling a nice finish to be cut by the use of a a finishing tool broad enough to even up the two outs made by the roughing tool.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood thatvari ous changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional .view of a double-cutting planer tool holder constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the doublecutting planertool holder.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing I 1 In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the tool holder comprises a body portion 1 consisting of a shankoor bar 2 and an enlargement or head 3 provided at opposite sideswith longitudinal recesses 4 forming a central longitudinal web or sup.- porting portion 5 and receiving tool blocks 6. The tool blocks 6, which are mounted on pins 7 are provided at their inner or rear ends with openings for the reception of the said pins and they are connected by a coiled spring 8 mounted in a transverse opening 9 in the said web portion 5 of the head and having its terminals connected with the tool blocks 6 for automatically swinging the same inwardly into the recesses at the end of a stroke. One end of the coiled spring is hooked into an eye 10 of a screw 11 and the .other end 12 of the coiled spring passes one or more of the openings 14: may of.

course be provided for each of the blocks, as;
will be readily understood' Each of the tool blocks is provided with a pair of tools 15, which are-secured in the openings 14 by means of outer laterally extending clamping'screws 16 preferably arranged in pairs, as shown, and the tools are adjusted by meansof adjusting devices comprising diagonally arranged rear adjusting screws 17 mounted in threaded bores or openings 18 of the tool blocks and provided at' their inner ends with ball-shaped heads 20, which bear against balls 19 interposed between the ball-shaped heads 20 and the rear ends of the tools 15. By this construction an accu-' rate adjustment of the tools may be obtained and the pairs of side clamping screws 16 will enable the tools to be firmly held in their adjusted position.
The purpose of the double tool block or the two openings in the tool blocks is that in adjusting the two roughing tools one may cut a little deeper than the other or a nice most true in its cutting or planing operation. However, for rough work a tool block having only one opening may be advanta A geously employed.
The double-cutting planer tool holder maintains a cutting tool engaged with the work on both the forward and backward strokes or" the machine and the tool holderis designed to be made in various sizes to suit various kinds and sizes of planing machines, and with an offset shank can be used for vertical planing the same as an ordinary tool holder.
The longitudinal openings of the tool blocks diverge outwardly when the tool blocks are at the limit of their inward movement, and the cutting edges of the tools are arranged at the outer edges ofthe projecting ends of the tools and when one tool or set of tools of .a tool block is cutting the beveled edges of the tools of the other set i are presented to the Work and the tool blocks swing outwardly and are returned to their normal position at the end of the stroke by the coiled spring.
What is claimed is: l. A tool holder of the class described inv eluding a body provided at opposite sides with. recesses and having an intervening web, tool blocks pivotally mounted in the recesses and arranged to swing laterally and provided at their front ends with tool openings and having means for secur.ng tools therein, and a coiled spring extending through the web or" the body and connected with the tool blocks:
near-gee 2, A tool holder of the class described including a body, a tool block pivotally mounted on the body and provided with a longitudinal opening extending inwardly from the front end of the tool block, a screw mounted in the rear portion of the tool block and arranged at an obtuse angle to the tool receiving opening and engaging the inner end face of a tool, and means for locking the tool in the block.
3. A tool holder of the class described including a body, a pivotally mounted tool block at each opposite side thereof having a longitudinally disposed tool receiving opening and provided with a threaded bore extending rearwardly from the tool receiving opening at an angle to the same, an angularly disposed screw mounted in the threaded bore for operating against the rear end of a tool, said screw being provided at its inner end with a ball-shaped head, and an anti-friction ball interposed between the ball-shaped head and the tool.
In testimony whereof ll afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
