TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed November 30, 1907. Serial No. 404,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS T. HARKNESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in tool-holders, which are adapted to be used in lathes, shapers, or planes, and like machines in metal working.
The object of the invention is the production of a tool-holder, which may be used as a right or left hand holder.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a holder, comprising a minimum number of parts, and which will answer several purposes, and, consequently, greatly reduce the cost of expense to manufacture a holder and metal-working tools.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is aview in side elevation of the structure depicted in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary, vertical sectional view taken on line 3, 8, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinally, sectional view taken on line 4, 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of another embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a shank of a tool-holder, which shank may be of any suitable length, width, and thickness, according to the size or construction of the tool-post 2 (dotted lines Fig. 1) to which it is to be secured. The body of the tool-holder comprises an off-set portion 3, which is provided with V-shaped grooves 4 upon opposite sides. The off-set body 3 is also provided, upon opposite sides, with horizontal shoulders 5, each two of which shoulders constitute a square recess or groove for a square tool, whereas the yshaped grooves or recesses 4 provide a sultable socket or holder for round tools. The
body 8 is also provided with a transverse aperture 6, within which aperture 6 is positioned a pin or shaft 7. Carried by shaft 7 is a substantially U-shapedyoke 8. The yoke 8 is provided with an enlarged portion or head 9, within which is threaded a setscrew or clamping member 10.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that the substantially V- shaped grooves 4 and 5 are deepened at the center 11 and the sides of said grooves are formed so as to make stepped shoulders 11', whose outer corners are adapted to engage the tool and be used as biting teeth thus holding the tool more rigid .and permanent in the holder when the same is in use.
In Fig. 5, I have illustrated another embodiment of my invention, which comprises a shank 12 provided with an off-setbody portion 13, and positioned upon said body portion 13 near its ends are pivotally-mounted yokes 8. The body 13 is similarly constructed to the body 3, and, therefore, it is not necessary to specifically describe the structure of said body. The object of employing a body extending upon opposite sides of the shank 12 and mounting a plurality of yokes upon said body is to provide a very strong holder for use on very heavy lathes in engine work or anywhere a strong tool is needed. The same principle is common in this structure as in the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4; the body is provided, preferably, with a deepened groove or grooves, directly beneath the set-screws 0r clamping members 10. By turning the holder over and reversing the position of the yoke (by swinging said yoke over the end of the body) it forms either a right or left hand ofi-set holder. The yoke swings on the pin or shaft 7, and thereby is permitted to be kept in a vertical or its normal upright position. It is to be noted that the oif-set body minimizes the strain on the cross-head of a lathe, as well as the bringing of the strain merely parallel with the gib, and not at right-angles thereto. My improved holder can, obviously, be used for right and left hand tools for boring, threading, or almost any use to which ordinary tools are applied on a lathe, shaper, or
planer. My holder can also be used for holding drills, which will permit the use of a with said shallow end portions, and means 10 longitudinal feed of the lathe. for holding a tool in said groove.
What I claim is: In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my 3 tool holder comlpriising a3 1elongatlad signature in presence of two witnesses. b0 y having opposite yispose on 1tu inally-arranged grooves, said grooves bein LOUIS HARKNESS' provided with shoulders arranged in steppe l Witnesses: relation and also with a central recess and A. B. CoRoILrUs,
shallow end portions, said recess merging H. H. CHASE.
