One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a slicing machine with the seting mechanism so arranged that the thickness of slices. can be readily adjusted by the operator even during the process of slicing.
Another object of my invention is to pro.- vide improved means for feeding the meat table periodically after the severance of each slice, my invention furthermore contemplating the construction of this portion of the apparatus in such a way that the feed screw commonly employed to perform this feeding function is substantially inclosed whereby it is permitted more readily to maintain an oil surface and whereby the liability of dearrangement thereof is minimized; furthermore all danger of tampering with the feed screw or of accidents due to its exposure is thereby avoided. e
I will explain one form of machine embodying a structure capable of performing the results and functions above outlined more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating such ma chine, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention;

In order to keep the feed screw in properly oiled condition and to prevent it from accumulating dust and dirt I provide a'shell' 27 extending between the bearings 14 and 15, which shell securely covers and incloses the screw 13 except along that portion. of. the periphery of the screw where it is in 28 pivoted to the meat table 4;, which link carries at its lower surface the cam or. dog

This link is pivotally connected by means of a link 29 which suitably engages the ratchet construction, consisting of the ratchet wheel 529 and ratchet 29 shown more clearly in 5, provided within the housing 30 which moves the feed screw forward with each contra-clockwise movement '(Fig.v 2) of the link 28. The thickness of the slices depends upon the degree of move ment of the feed screw 13 during each actuation, and this is controlled by the amount of movement of the dog 16 which in turn is controlled by the position of the roller 31.
. A handle 32 is fixedly secured to the screw 13 to rotate it toadvance the meat plate 12 when so desired without operating the ,entire machine. The roller 31 is carried by a bolt 33 (Fig. 4-) which at its lefthand extremity is provided with a rack portion .34 engaging the pinion 35. A suitable housing 36 entirely incloses the bolt 33 and pinion 35.
