To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH LAWRENCE OBR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Lynchburg, Vinl the county `ofCainpbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to fasted ers and more'particularly to certain new and Auseful improvements in fasteners for bags.v 'l' IThe primary' objectV of the invention is to for fastening kthe draw string of a bag or the like after the string has been drawn tight uponl the mouth of' the bag. t
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a device of lthis character which will be of extremely simple and inexpensive con? struction, yet one which will be strong, durable, and well adapted to the purpose A for which it is designed.
Vith these and other objects inI view, the invention resides in the 4details of constructionand the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully .described and claimed.
In Ythe accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure l is a perspective view of the upper end or mouth of abag having a draw string, illustrating the application of la device constructed in accordance with this invention thereto; t
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, partly in section, detached from the bag but showing the manner in which the draw string is connected to the same ready to be drawn.;
Fig. 3 isY a central vertical longitudinal In describing the structure of the inven-v tion shown in the drawings above briey described, similar reference characters will be placed on like parts throughout all the views, and reference will be herein made ywhich is connected to the saine draw string Bare Hof` times, *then'passed between the Vfurcations in the to the various elements by` their respective...
indices. To this lend, nates aA body member the numeral l `desigor head which in the Y present instance is ofrectangular ,configurato be understood, mayi` tion, but' which, it is be'fof any desired shape. versely from edge to' edge l is a pairof parallel pose of which will be Extending laterally from one of the above mentioned edges of the head lfrom a point disposed vbetween one of` the 'ends of the apertures 2 is' a shank 8. formed 'integrally with EXteiidingtransthrough the headtions being beveled inwardly' as at -5from apertures 2, the purhereinafter described.

'This shank `3fisv the head l1, andis bifurcated, thefuroations of which arepro-il their outer to their inner sidesfor a-purpose to bedescribed. -Y 'y Y While the fastener maybe made up ofV any material, yet a slightly resilient metal is convenient, and wood, while being cheaper than metal, is preferred. the fastener is shownas'being constructed of wood. t 1
While=the deviceisk applicable for use *in connection with receptacles other than bags, yet for-'the vpurpose of illustration'it is shown in Fig. l in connection with a bag A'. This'bag is provided with a draw string B in the v-usual manner. The, ends of the In the drawings inserted through the apertures 2 in the head i f 1` and tiedtogether1V asl at bito prevent the head l from being vaccidentally disengaged.
After the bag has beenfilled or it isdesiredv to lclose it, the drawy stringB 'is drawn through the apertures'Q until tight. is f then wound *around the shank Sla number andv` the ends of lthe"strinfgg"are fui-cations of the shank for inserting the When clamped in be loosely clamped. The bev` ico this manner, the draw string will be prevented from accidentallyy loosen-ing, andyet may be easily disengaged from the fastener and loosened. The portions of the draw string B wound around the shank 3 provide an eiiicient means for preventing the furcations of said shank from separating with respect to each other and for causing them to effectively engage the portion of said string disposed between them.
rPhe device is especially applicable to laundry bags, and in this conection it will be found convenient to provide a tagihold-Y ing means. Such a means is shown in the drawings consisting of a spring fastener C, one of the members of which is secured to the head l by means of a screw or other securing device c. In Fig. l of the drawings, a tag D is shown clamped between the jaws of the fastener C.
The head and shank being integrally united as above described and shown in the drawingspresent as a whole a T-shaped structure in plan view.
From the Yforegoing description taken i connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and use of the invention will be understood 'without'a more extended explanation. v Y
As various changes in form, proportion, and in the minordetails of construction mayl be resorted to without departing from the spiritof this invention, it is to be understood. that I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
I claim:
1. A devicel of the class described comprising a head provided with a pair of apertures, and a bifurcated shank attached to said head, the furcations of said shank being resilient, in combination with a draw string extending through said apertures and wound around said shank, and then clamped between the furcations thereof, the portions of said draw string which are wound around said shank holding the furcations thereof in their clamped positions.
2. A device of the class described comprising a head having a pair of transversely Copies of `this L.patent may be obtained for j ve cents each, by addressing' the Washington, D. C.
extending parallel apertures, and a bifurcated shank extending laterally from one edge of said head and disposed between said apertures, the furcations of said shank being provided with opposing recesses in their inner sides, inl combination with a draw stringV extending through said apertures and wound around said shank, and then clamped between the opposing recesses ofsaid furca tions, the shoulders formed at the outer ends of said recesses preventing said string from moving longitudinally with respect to said furcations.
3. Adevice of the class described comprising a head having a pair'of apertures extending therethrough, and a bifurcated shank extending laterally from one edge of said head and disposedy between said'ape'rtures, said shank being integrally united with said head and combining with the latter to form a l`shaped structure, lin combination with a drawstring extendingthrough said apertures and woundy around said shank, and then clamped between the furcationsthereof, the portions of saidv draw string which are wound around said shank holding the furcations thereof in their clamped positions. Y
4. A device of the character described comprising a head having a pair of cord receiving openings and a bifurcated shank extending from said head, the furcations of said shank being resilient for the purpose set forth.
5. A device of the character described comprising a T-shaped structure including a head and a` shank projecting therefrom, said head beingiformed with a pair of parallel apertures arranged adjacent its lends and said shank being arranged between said apertures and bifurcated to provide resilient members for the purpose set forth.
In testimonywhereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
