To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GLENN W. WA'rsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowers for Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
lt is the object of the invention to obtain a simplified construction vof blower for water tube boilers, in which the blower jets are so arranged as to sweep the spaces between adjacent rows of tubes, and when not in use to be protected from the furnace heat. Heretofore blowers have been devised in "which a series of nozzles projecting through apertures in the furnace wall have been individually rotatively adjustable to sweep the 2o spaces between rows of tubes. Such constructions necessitate a series of operating devices for adjusting the different nozzles, each of which passes through the furnace wall and is subjected at its inner end to the furnace heat. lThe nozzles are, however, simultaneously operated by a common actuating mechanism outside of the furnace wall. To simplify the construction and also the work of installation l have devised a blower in which there is a single steam supply conduit and a single nozzle-operating device passing through the furnace wall, together with a laterally-extending swiveled arm rotatively actuated by said operating device and having a series or jet nozzles projecting therefrom. l have further made provision for protecting` the blower when not in use, comprising a recess in the inner face of the furnace wall into which the laterally-proe@ jecting arm may be'withdrawn.

In detail, A is the wall of the furnace and B B etc. a series of rows of tubes of a water tube boiler which are arranged within the furnace chamber. C is the steam supply conduit for the blower which is connected to a hollow head or cylinder D projecting 1n to an aperture through the furnace wall and suitably anchored therein as by the collars E. F is an extension pipe telescopically engaging the hollow head or cylinder D and extending through the furnace wall. This extension pipe is provided with a rearwardly-extending guide rod or shank G passing out through the cylinder D and having sleeved thereon a spring H engaging a collar or head l upon the shank to normally retract the extension F. J is a laterally-extending hollow arm which is swiveled in a suitable bearing K at the outer end of the extension pipe F so as to be rotatively adjustable. A suitable operating fwmechanism for rotating the arm J is provided which as shown comprises a rock-arm L on the arm J connected by a link M to a rod N, which passes outward adjacent to 7o the pipe F and is mounted in suitablebearvings thereon. The outer end of the rod N is provided with a hand-wheel 0 or other means for rotating the same and a threaded portion of said rod engaging a threaded bearing in the collar l serves to cause a longitudinal movement of the rod upon rotation thereof. Any other suitable actuating mechanism may be employed by which the arm J may be rotated through a limited angle by a single actuating means operable from outside of the furnace wall. The arm J is provided with a series of jet nozzles P which as shown are arranged in alinement with the spaces Q between adjacent rows of tubes B B etc., and thus each jet during the rotative adjustment of the arm J will sweep the space between adjacent rows of tubes.
The longitudinal adjustment of the extension tube F is suliicient to move the arm J from a position where it is clear of the furnace wall adjacent to the tubes to a position where it is retracted into the recess R on the inner face of the wall. Ilhe latter position is the normal one when the apparatus is not in use, and the tension of the spring H is suilicient to adjust the parts into this position whenever the steam pressure is relieved.
ln use, to clean the boiler tubes the admission ofsteam through the conduit C to the cylinder D will cause the outward projection of the extension pipe F, carrying with it the laterally-extending arm J. At the same time steam will be discharged from 1w each of the nozzles P into the registering space between adjacent rows of tubes, and the operator by manipulating the handwheel O can rotate the arm J as a unit sweeping the jets through the desired angle. is soon as the steam pressure is relieved the spring H will retract the tube F, carrying with it the arm J and withdrawing the latter into the recess R where it is protected from the intense furnace heat.
The construction as'described has a decided advantage over constructions employing a series of nozzles each having its individual actuating device,first, because the construction is simplified and cheapened, and second because it requires only a single perforation in the furnace wall.
In Figs. 3 and a T have shown a modified construction which facilitates the forming of the recess into whichv the blower is withdrawn when not in use. With this construction in place of forming the recess in the brick work i have provided a hollow metallic casing S which isplaced in the furnace wall in the space occupied by a single course of brick. This casing has an enlarged central portion T of sufficient size to receive the member D, while the main portion :of the casing is of suficient length and depth to receive the rotary blower arm d'. Thus as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 the blower geraete is completely withdrawn in the chamber provided by this casing, while in full lines in the same figure the blower is shown extended to be outside of the casing and in proximity to the water tubes to be cleaned.
What T claim as my invention is :-f A blower for water Vtube boilers, comprising a conduit longitudinally adjustable through a furnace wall, a laterally-extending hollow arm swiveled in the inner end of said conduit and provided with a series of jet apertures, a rod extending through said wall parallel and adjacent to said conduit, a connection between the inner end of Said rod and said hollow arm for rotating the latter upon longitudinal displacement of the former, a collar having threaded engagement v with the outer end of said rod, a member extending from said adjustable conduit outwardly in proximity to Vsaid rod and carrying said collar, a spring acting outwardly upon said collar, and means for normally rotating said rod to longitudinally adjust the same through its engagement with said collar.
