PAPER-CUTTER GR LIKE LEACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 16, 1917.
Application filed March 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,641.
i '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GLADSTONE Fisrrnn, asubject of the King of Great Britain, residing at thecity of Hull, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutters or like Machines, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper cutters or like machines, of that type designed to be used bvbankers, brokers, etc.,' and the objects of the invention are to facilitate clipping coupons from stock or bond certificates, to permit of the adjacent edges of the coupon being simultaneously cut or trimmed, to so support the knives or cutting members that they cannot become inadvertently displaced, to simplify the construction of the cutters, to enable the cutters to be'readily and accurately positioned prior to cutting, to permit difl'erently sized coupons to be cut with the same device, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them.
For a complete understanding of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cutter.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved device comprising a pair of levers l0 and 11 pivotally connected intermediate of their length by a fulcrum pin 12 the said levers being provided with shoulders 14, located adjacent to their pivotal points, designed to limit the actuation of these levers.
The lever 10 is rigidly attached at its front end to the transversely extending positioning plate or stay 15 by means of bolts 16, the lateral edges of the plate being angularly disposed and flanged as shown at 17, to embrace the outer faces of the angularly disposed knives 18 to which the plate is attached by rivets or the like.
The knives 18 are adapted to cut adjacent edges of a coupon or the like and to this end are arranged at substantially right angles to each other, with the apex in alinement with the levers 10 and 11, the outer ends of the k-ife being pivoted to the movable hives by means of the pins or rivets 20.
The knives 19 are provided intermediate of their length, and on the upper edge thereof, with projections 21 having slots 22 there in adapted to engage with the curvilinear and transversely extending rods23, which are "igidly connected intermediate of their in i to the end of the lever 11.
adjacent ends of the knives 19 are beveled so that when these knives are closed on the knives 18, the ends will have shearing engagement and the lower edges of the knives 19 and the upper edges of the knives 18 are beveled to form substantially cutting edges.
The k iives 19 and 18 are designed to be normally held in open relation, and to this end I provide a, spring 2% located between the outer ends of the levers 10 and 11 which are formed in the manner of hand-grips.
The assembly of the several parts will be.
readily understood from the foregoing description. In using this machine, the paper to be cut is inserted between the fixed knives 18 the correct positioning of said knives being readily observed through opening between the plate 15 and the knives 18, when pressure is exerted on the levers 10 and 11 close the said knives and sever the said paper along two adjacent edges, thus clipping the coupon or the like in rectangular shape.
When the pressure has been relieved from the levers, the knives 19 and 18 under the action of the spring 2 1 automatically open to permit of the next coupon being cut in the manner above described.
By providing the knife 19 with the slotted projections 21, it will be clear that provision is thus made to permit of the knives conforming to the movement of the levers 10 and 11 during the operation of closing or opening the same, so that there is no liability of the rod 23 binding on the knives.
Again, it will be readily seen that by supporting the fixed knives 18 with the transversely extending plate or stay 15, that spreading of these knives is prevented, while at the same time, the inner faces of the knives are smooth to permit of their intimate engagement with the outer faces of the movable knives 19.
In the use of a machine of this description a considerable saving of time is effected in clipping War loan coupons and like bonds, while the several parts of the machine are so arranged that there is no liability of their going out of repair.
It will be observed that the device does not require adjustment to cut coupons of differing sizes. The size of the coupon out is only limited by the length of the knife edges and small or large coupons may be cut by properly positioning the knives or paper to be cut.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments ofmy invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above specification and accompanying drawings, be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1; A coupon clipper comprising a pair of fixed upper blades, joined rigidly at right angles to each other and adapted to be placed along over the upper sides of the coupon which is to be cut, lower blades pivotally connected to the outer end of the fixed blades relatively to each other, the said means com prising a pair of crossv levers pivoted together, one lever being connected to the fixed blades, and a cross bar on the other lever extending through suitable slots formed in the movable blades.
2. A coupon clipper comprising a pair of fixed blades joined rigidly at right angles to each other, a pair of movable blades pivoted to outer ends of the fixed blades and being formed with slots, a positioning plate 15, connected to the fixed blades, a pair of crossed pivoted levers, the end of one lever being connected to the said plate 15, and rods on the other lever extending transversely through the slots on the movable blades.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. in the presence of. a witness.
HENRY GLADSTONE FISHER. lVitness:
RUSSEL S. SMART.
