STEAM-CONDENSIN G PLAN '1,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. to, 1917.
Application filed December 12, 1916. Serial No. 136,586.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD 'BARNS Mom- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Hartlepool, in the county of Durham, England, have invented the Improvements in or Relating to Steam- Condensing Plants of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for withdrawing condensate with or without condensing water from a main condenser under vacuum and delivering a part or the whole of the water to one or more auxiliary condensers under a pressure or pressures which is or are greater than the pressure in the main condenser and less than atmospheric, and through which auxiliary condenser or condensers the air withdrawn from the main condenser is discharged on its way to the atmosphere.
The object of my invention is to provide improved apparatus of the kind referred to, whereby condensate with or without condensing water can be delivered from the main condenser to the auxiliary condenser or condensers and to the atmosphere, either direct or otherwise, by a pump or pumps which may comprise one or more stages.
According to my invention, a pump or the first stage of a multi-stage pump withdraws condensate with or without condensing water from the main condenser, and another pump or the last stage of the multi-stage pump, together it may be with the first mentioned pump, discharges the water to-the atmosphere either direct or otherwise, a suitable water resistance or water head producing device (which may consist of the water discharge system in which resistance or head results from the pressure of theatmosphere) being provided on the discharge side of the pump or first stage which withdraws water from the main condenser. From such device or the pipe or passage leading thereto, one or more pipes are led to one or more auxiliary condensers, the arrangement being such that the water resistance or water head producing device causes a preferential supply of water to be delivered to the auxiliary condenser or condensers.
The water from the auxiliary condenser or condensers may be delivered into the main condenser or into the suction of one.
pump or into the suction of one or more stages of a pump. For example, when there are two or more auxiliary condensers under different pressures, the water from the auxiliary condenser or condensers under the lowest absolute pressure is delivered into the main condenser or into the suction of one pump or the first stage of a pump, and the water from the auxiliary condenser or condensers under higher absolute pressure is delivered into the suction of another pump or into the suctionof the second or later stages of the multi-stage pump. The pump or pumps which withdraw the water from the auxiliary condenser or condensers may deliver to the atmosphere through another auxiliary steam condensing device which is preferably in the form of a water jet ejector so that it will be self-discharging; a non-return valve or valves may be arranged in the pipes or connections for the purpose of preventing back-flow therethrough into the main condenser; and when found desirable, two or more water resistances or water head producing devices may be arranged between the stages of a pump with the object of supplying water to multiple auxiliary condensers in the manner described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate diagrammatically particular forms of my invention, the same letters of reference being used to denote similar parts. In Figures 1, 2 and 5 the main condenser is of the surface type, and in Figs. 3 and 4 the main condenser is of the direct contact type.
-. In Fig. 1, the condensate is withdrawn from the main condenser a by two pumps a, b, or by a two-stage pump a, b. The first pump or stage a delivers through a loaded valve (1 to the second pump or stage I which discharges to the atmosphere, and a pipe 6 is led from the connection between the first stage a and the loaded valve d, to two auxiliary condensers f and 9 working under different pressures, the resistance to the flow of water through the valve 03 being sufficient to cause a preferential supply of water to the auxiliary condensers. water from the auxiliary condenser f, which is under the lower absolute pressure, is discharged through a suitably looped pipe h and cock to into the main condenser c or into the suction of the first stage a of the pump, a vent pipe '0 being provided so that the air separated from the water may pass back into the main condenser. The condensate from the second auxiliary condenser g, which is under a higher absolute pressure, is discharged into the suction of the second stage The.
b. Valves Z and mare provided for controlling the quantity of water delivered to the auxiliary condensers, and with the object of preventing back-flow into the main condenser in the event of derangement, the valve 'm may'be of the non-return type.
2 isa modification of Fig. 1. In this arrangement ,the loaded valve d (shown in Fig. 1) is omitted and the necemary resistance to the flow of water is caused by a water head producing device in the form of an elevated receiver 01.. The first stage a, or its equivalent, discharges into this receiver through-the pipe e, and by means of the head of water so produced, a preferential supply of water is available for the auxiliary condensers. The supply of water for the auxiliary condenser f is taken from the pipe 6, and the supply of water for the auxiliary condenser g is taken from the lower portion of the receiver through the pipe 0, the remainder of the water flowing through the pipe u to the suction of the second stage 6. The receiver is provided at the top with a vent pipe j through, which air separated from the water may flow into the auxiliary condenser g and when desirable I may provide a non-return valve, such as the valve p, for preventing back flow into the main condenser. V
In Fig. 3 the condensate together with the condensing water are withdrawn from-a main direct contact condenser 0 by a pump t, and the pipe 6 is led from the discharge pipe 1' to the auxiliary condensersf and g to which a preferential supply of water is delivered by reason of the resistanceofi'ered to the flow of water from the pump t to the atmosphere, such resistance being due to the pressure of the atmosphere, or due to a water resistance or water head producing device which may be placed in the discharge pipe and used either continuously, or only when starting up the plant. The water is withdrawn from the auxiliary condensers f and g by a two-stage pump, the water from the auxiliary condenser f under the lower absolute pressure being discharged into the suction of the first stage a, and the water from the auxiliary condenser 9 under the higher absolute pressure bein charged into the suction of the secon stage I). In this arrangement, the Water delivered to the auxiliary condensers f and g absorbs the heat in the steam condensed therein, and can therefore advantageously be used for feeding the boilers.
In Fig. 1, which-is a modification of Fig. 3, the water from the auxiliary condenser f under the lower pressure is discharged into the main condenser or into the suction of the pump 25 through the looped pipe h, and the water from the auxiliary condenser 9 under higher absolute pressure is removed to the atmosphere by a single stage pump 6.
dis-
The arrangements described permit of the auxiliary condensers being supplied with water at the temperature at which -it leaves the main condenser and are particularly suitable for use in combination with'the air Withdrawing apparatus described in the specification of my application Serial N 0. 89459, filed 6th April, 1916, in which aerated vapor is withdrawn from the main condenser and the air discharged to the atmosphere by steam operated ejectors arranged in series with intermediate auxiliary condensers; and when the final steam ej ector discharges into a water jet ejector, a pump, according to my present invention, may conveniently discharge through such water ejector to the atmosphere.
For example, Fig. 5 illustrates my present invention (as described with reference to Fig. 1-), in combination with air withdrawing apparatus of the kind described in the specification of my application Serial No. 89459, filed 6th April, 1916. In this arrangement the auxiliary condensers are placed in series with steam operated ejectors w, y, 2, and the second pump or stage 12, instead of delivering direct to the atmosphere, delivers through a water jet ejector-condenser 8 into which the steam operated ejector z discharges.
In the arrangements herein described, the water pipes orconnections may be provided with means for the removal of free air, and suitable valves or cocks for regulating the supply of water to the auxiliary condensers and elsewhere may be fitted where required.
