GRAINCONTAINER FOR WAGON-BXES.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 9ct. 16, 1917.
Application filed January 22, 1917. Serial No. 143,598.
To all tolto/1u t may Concern.'
Ee it known that I, GEORGE KENsBoGK', a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Leavenworth .and
State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Grain-Containers for Vagon-Boxes, of which the folby the contents of the container can be dumped into the hopper of a grain elevator, without waste by spillage on the ground.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and in order that said invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon body provided with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view, taken on line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the parts disclosed by Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. t is a cross sectional view on line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a broken detail, perspective view of the rear portion of the container.
1 designates a wagon box of the type usually employed on farm wagons and embodies side boards 2, end-gates 3, tie-rods 4: for holding the end-gates in place, an intermediate tie-rod 5 to prevent the side boards bulging outwardly intermediate their ends, and a bottom 6.
8 designates my container, the Shape of which corresponds, substantially, to the interior of the wagon box, within which it is adapted to fit as clearly shown on Figs. 1 and 2. Said container consists, preferably, of-sheeting, canvas, or other strong fabric and comprises a bottom 10, sides 11, and front and rear ends 12 and 13, respectively, all of which are joined in such manner as to prevent leakage of grain.
The rear end 13 is provided with a spout 15, having a reduced outlet 16 through which the grain or other contents of the container can be discharged. To close the spout it is folded upwardly against the rear end 13 of the container as disclosed on Fig. 2, where it is reliably held by a pin 1S and eyelets 19 and 2O secured to thelower side of the outlet 16 and the upper portion of said' rear end 13, respectively. The pin 18 is, preferably, attached by a cord 21 to the rear end 13 of the container 8, to prevent loss of said pin when withdrawn from the eyelets 19Vand 20, preparatory to lowering the outlet from the position disclosed by Fig. 3, to the position disclosed by Fig.- 5.
The upper margins of the sides 11 and the ends 12 and 13 of the container 8 are provided with hooks 23 adapted tol engage the upper edges of the wagon body and thus prevent said sides and ends of the container from sagging downwardly. The hooks 23 also hold the upper edges of the container snugly against the interior walls of the wagon box 1 and thus prevent grain being pitched into said container from falling between the walls thereof and the walls of the wagon box.
, The bottom 10 of the container 8 is reinforced with metallic wear Strips 25, so that when necessary, grain can be 4shoveled from the container without injury to said bottom 10 from contact with the hard surface of the shovel. Strips of fabric 26 are interposed between the bottom 10 and the wear strips 25 to prevent the edges of the latter cutting the former and said bottom 10 is further reinforced by fabric strips 27, stitched or otherwise secured to the underside of the bottom 1G immediately beneath the strips 26.
When it is desired to use the wagon box 1 for hauling other farm products than grain and seeds, the container 8 can be readily removed, so that it will not be subjected to undue wear. f
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have provided means whereby the great loss of grain suffered annually by farmers throughout the country from hauling grain in leaky wagon boxes from the farm to an elevator, or shipping point, is economically and effectively overcome, and while l have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of thc claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a device of the character described, a flexible container adapted to t within a wagon box, a spout at one end of said containerl adapted to fold against said end, spaced eyes on said spout, spaced eyes k0n the end of the container arranged so4 as to be received in the spaces between the spout eyes and in alinement therewith, and a pin adapted to be placed in said eyes to hold the spout in folded condition.
2. In a device of the character described,
a iiexible container adapted to lit within wagon box, strips secured longitudinally to the upper and lower surfaces of the bottom of said container, and metallic wear strips secured to the iirst-mentioned uppermost strips.
3. In a device of the character described, a iexible container adapted to lit within a wagon box, and metallic wear and reinforcing strips secured to the bottom of the con- Vtainer and on the upper face of said bottom,
said wear strips being arranged longitudinally of theJ bottom and formed to provide smooth faces on which a shovel may slide in removing grain from the container.
4f. In a device of the character described, a flexible container adapted to fit within a wagon box, metallic wear and reinforcing` strips secured to the bottom of the container and on the upper face of said bottom, said wear strips being arranged longitudinally of the bottom and formed to provide smooth faces on which a shovel ymay slide in removs ing grain from the container, and fabric strips alined with said wear strips and interposed between the latter and the container bottom and formed to yprevent the edges of the wear strips from cutting the container bottom.
In testimony whereof I aliix mysignature, v
