To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new vide looper mechanism for sewing machines and more particularly machines adapted for glove sewlng and s1m1lar uses.
The improvements may be used in conjunction with needle actuating and feeding mechanisms of any suitable form, the 1m provements being especially adapted, however, to the general machine construction shown and described in my application filed October -18, 1913, Serial No. 795,841, in which the reciprocatory needle-bar is provided with a transverse pin slidingly fitted within the boss of a strap embracing an actuating eccentric upon the rotary driving shaft, the feeding mechanism comprising a horizontally arranged feed-wheel carrying a plurality of ratchet-wheels of progressively smaller diameters operatively e11- gaged by one of a series of selective pawls carried by a pawl block.
The looper mechanism of the present improvements comprises a vibratory and endwise movable looper-bar carrying a looper at one end and pivotally connected at the opposite end with a rocking element fulcrumed upon a swinging arm and carrying studs upon opposite sides of its fulcrum point engaging actuating Came from which the rocking element derives both rocking and bodily reciprocating movements upon arm connected by a pitman with a swinging lever actuated by a cam upon saiddriving shaft.

The improvements are shown mounted within a frame comprising the hollow base 1 from which rises the standard 2 provided with the transverse mainor' driving shaft and the crossshaft 4E disposed above and parallel with the same. Adjustably' secured upon the main shaft 3 is the gear-wheel 5 provided in one face with the cam-groove 6 and in the opposite face with the camgroove 7 and meshing with the gear-wheel 8 similarly secured by means of the setscrew 8 upon the shaft 4 and having the cam-groove 9 in the face corresponding with that of the gear 5 containing the camgroove 6.
Mounted within the standard 2 upon the cross pin 10v is the hub 11 of a swinging arm 12. having journaled in the boss 13 at its upper end a fulcrum pin 14iextending laterally from a cruciform rocking or cam follower element having upwardly extending and depending arms 15 and 16 carryingrespectively the roller studs 17 and 18 which enter the cam-grooves 9 and 6 respectively. The said rocking element is provided with lateral arms19 and 20 carrying screw-studs 21 entering slots 22 in a plate 23 which is provided at its forward end with the laterally'offset extension 24provided With thebearing boss 25.
Journaled in the bearing boss 25 is the pivotal pin 26 formed with the forked end 27 in which ispivotally secured by means of the pin 28 theapertured extremity of the split socket 29 in which is secured by means of the clamp-screws 30 the rearward end of the looper bar 31 having fitted upon its forward; end'the looper socket 32 secured thereon by means of the set-screw 33 and having fastened therein-by means of the'set screw 34 the shank 3530f the looper which is represented as formed with the eye-pointed blade 36.

Having thus set forththe nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, 7 the combination with a vibratory and endwise, movable looper-bar carrying a looper, means includ 1 ing a plurality of cam-elements and asingle-cam-follower element acted upon hy said cam elements for imparting said movements to the looper-bar, a looper-bar ful crum, a support therefor movable crosswise of the looper-bar, a swinging lever operatively connected with one of said camelements, and a connection between said swinging lever and the fulcrum support for the looper-bar for imparting sidewise movements to the latter.
8. In a sewing machine, the combination with a reciprocating needle, a vibratory and endwise movable looper-bar carrying a looper having a beak directed transversely of the needle and adapted to seize a loop of needle-thread, means including a plurality of cam-elements for imparting said movements to the looper-bar, a looper-bar fulcrum, a rock-lever sustaining said fulcrum and having a pivotal support extending in a direction transversely of the looper beak and needle, a swinging lever operatively connected with one of said camelements and a pitman connection between said swinging lever and a point of said rock-lever disposed at one side of its pivotal support.
9. In a sewing machine, the combination with a vibratory and endwise movable lcoper-bar carrying a looper, of a sleeve embracing said looper-bar and affording a fulcrum therefor, supporting means for said sleeve adapted to permit movement of the latter in a direction crosswise of the looperbar, a rocking element pivotally connected with the looper-bar rearwardly of said sleeve, a movable fulcrum for said rocking element, and means for imparting movements to said rocking element both bodily with its fulcrum and relatively to the latter.
10. In a sewing machine, the combination with a vibratory and endwise movable looper-bar carrying a looper, of a tilting bearing within which the looperbar is slidingly mounted, means for moving said bearing in a direction crosswise of the l0operbar, a rocking element pivotally connected to the looperbar, a swinging arm upon -which the rocking element is fulcrumed,
studs carried by said rocking element upon opposite sides of its fulcrum point, and actuating cams engaging said studs and adapted to impart to the rocking element bodily reciprocating movements, and rocking movements upon its fulcrum.
