' andusefnl Improvement in Turnover and Pattern-Drawing Devices; and'we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Uur invention relates to turnoverand pattern drawing devices and has special reference to such devices for use with sand molding machines, known :is the jarring type, wherein the pattern is placed in a casing or flask and sand placed around the same and this is then jarred by pneumatic means until the sand has attained the required degree of solidity.
The object of our invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efiicient form of turnover and pattern drawing device for use in connection with sand molding machines whereby `the pattern and the sand filled flask around the same may be turned over and the pattern removed from the same,
without disturbing the molded sand around such pattern and without any handling except by mechanical means.
Our invention-consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to construct and use our improved turnover and pattern drawing device we will describe the same, more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of the improved turnover and pattern drawing device together with a jarring machine, such device-being shown in its position during the jarring operation.

Fig. 19 is a cross sectional view of the same in the line a: m Fig. 1.
Fig. 2O is a partial view looking in direction of arrow F ig. 1.
As illust rated in the drawings our improved turnover and pattern drawing device A is used in connection with sand molding machines of the jarring type B, such as shown in Fig. 1, wherein the machine is provided with a table 1, which has a plunger 2 below the saineand connected therewith and such plunger operates in the cylinder 3. Around the jarring machine B and in close proximity to the edges or iianges 4 of the table 1 1s a casing 5 and such casing is provided at suitable points, such as the corners of the same. with projections 6. which have precesses 7 within the same. The recesses 7 in the projections f5 provide .for the reception of u resilient block 8 in each of the saine and such resilient blocks have a metal block 9 above the same which extends slightly above the upper edge of said projections. lxtending downwardly from the under face of the table 1 is a series of posts 10 and such posts are distributed one directly above each of the projections 6, and adapted Ato rest on the upper face of the metal blocks 9. At the lower end of the cylinder 3 is a-port 11, which has a valve mechanism 12 connecting -therewith sc that the plunger 2 mayV be raised automatically by means of operating fluid such escompressed air enteringfrom the pipe 13 into the valve mechanism 12 and the port 11 under said plunger in order to raise the same' Within said cylinder. The valve mechanism is operated in such `a maner that when the plunger 2 in the cylinder 3 has reached the desired height the operating fluid below the saine is exhausted therefrom and the plun- ,gerY allowed to dro Within said cylinder. The posts extending downward from the bottom of the table 1, where the pattern b rests, will thus strike on the tops of the metal blocks 9 and the .sand within the flask a' will be jarred, whereas, the plunger 2 will be raised immediately in the cylinder 3 so that the jarring operation is repeated eighty to one hundred times a minute. I
The turnover and pattern drawing device B has a frame or outer casing 14, in which is locateda cylinder 15, and such cylinder extends entirely through the said frame in a horizontal direction and has a curved crank case cover at the inner end thereof, which is for the purpose hereinafter described.
The frame 14 is also provided with a main shaft 17 which is provided at suitable points throughout the length of the same with square portions 18, while the remainder of the shaft is round for the purpose of operating in suitable-bearings. n
Within the cylinder is a piston 19, which is adapted to move in a direction shown by the arrow when theu pattern is being turned over by means of operating Huid such as compressed air entering through the pipe 15, and such piston is provided with 4a connecting rod 20, which is pivotally connected to said piston, as later described. The front end of the connecting rod 2() is connected to a crank 21 by a pivotal connection 22 at one end of the same, and such crank is connected at its other end to one of the square portions 18 on the shaft 17.
The lcrank case cover 16 is provided with a ange 23 which has a series of holes 24 which `are adapted to receive rods 25 and such rods extend inwardly in order to pro- 'vidersuitable guides for spiral springs 25a which are for the purpose hereinafter described.
turnover plate 26 is further provided with l offset portions 30 which have an upright extension 31 fastened thereto by means of a flange 32 while said upright extension is provided with a tapered trunnion 33 as later described.
At each end of the main shaft 17 and.
firmly secured to the square portions 18 thereon is a turnover arm 34 which has a downwardly curved inner end34 and an upwardly curved outer end 34, said outer end being provided with a round hole 35 for receiving a pin 36 which also enters the round hole 37 of the trunnion plate 38. This trunnion plate 38 is adapted to stand in a vertical position when the turnover arms 34 are in a lowered position as shown in Fig. 1 and is provided with a tapered groove 39 in the inner face of the same for receiving the trunnion 33 on the upright extension 31 carried by the turnover plate 26 at suitable times. The trunnion plate 38 is further provided `with a lug 40 which extends outwardly from they outer face of the same while at the upper end of said plate is a hole 41 as later described.
The turnover arm 34 is provided at a point near the outer end of the same with an enlarged portion 42 which has zr chamber 42 in the same and a hole 42a extending into said chamber from the upper side of said portion While the lower end of the chamber is closed by a suitable cover '43. The chamber 42 is provided with a spiral spring 44 while a pin 45 extends through the hole 42*1 and into the'chamber 42 where it is provided with a plate 46 for compressing the said spring from above. The bottom of the chamber 42 is also provided with a plate 46 which is adjusted to position by means of a screw 47 in order to provide the proper amount of tension on the spiral spring 44.
At one side ofthe turnover plate 26 a vibrator 48 is connected and such vibrator consists of a' body 49 and end caps 5() while a plunger or hammer 51 is adapted to be pushed back and forth therein by means of operating iuid admitted to the port 52 and alternately admitted from such port to the passageways 53 and 54whence it passes to the opposite ends'of said plunger. This vibrator 48 is for the purpose of gently vibrating the turnover plato 26 so that the patttern b in the Hash o can be readily with-1 drawn from the sand and the molded sand in saidask maintained in position while the spring 55 in said vibrator is to prevent the vplunger 5 1 from stopping on a dead-center rod to beV revolved on Ysaid pin as later den gru scribed. The rod 62 is provided with a left handed threaded portion 63 at its other end so as to provide fora turnbuckle 64 whichengages with said thread and with a similar right handed thread on the end'of a rod 65v in order to provide for the adjustment of the distance between the ends of the respective rods. At the outer end' of the rod 65 is a. locking pieceGG which has a curved groove 67 inthe offset portion 68 while the outer Side of the Same is providedwith aV hole 69 for receiving a pin 70 which pin is adapted to pass through the said hole and the hole 41 in the upper end of the trunnion plate 38 in order to fasten the same together and provide for the rotation of said parts. t A
At one side of the cylinder 15 isanother vertical cylinder 71 which has a plunger 72 within the same and an operating Huid admission port 73 for admitting operating Huid to` while the top of said plunger' is provided with a plate 74 which rises therewith and carries the equalizing table 74". This plate 74 has a friction pad 75 on each corner of the same and the center of said plate is provided with a pair of ,lugs 76 which are adapted to receive'a fulcrum lever 77 between the same while a fulcrum pin 7B eX- tends through said lever and lugs in order to form a pivotal connection therewith. A spring rod 79 extends out over the sides of the plate 74 and passes through a side beam 80 on each side of said table and has a friction spring S1 on each end thereof while a nut 82 holds said sprin in place and provides for the tension o said barsagainst the friction pads 75 on the corners of the plate 74. The fulcrum lever 77 has an end lever 83 at each end of the same and pivotally connected therewith at its center and such end lever is adapted to be'pivotally connected eat each end of the same to'one of the side beams bearingpads 84.
On each side of the cylinder 71 is an eX- tension 85 through which a rod 86 passes and each rod is fastened to the under side of the plate 74 by its upper end and a spiral spring 87 is located loosely on said rod and rests on the top ,of Said extension. The
lower end of each rod 86 is also provided of slidity.
raise said plunger in said cylinder i .80 by means of pivotal The use and operation of our improvedr turnover and pattern drawing device is as follows The turnover plate 26 is placed on thev table 1 as shown in Fig. 1 and the pattern is secured thereto such as by' wood screws is placed around said l pattern and molding sand is heaped into whereupon the flask a said flask. AThe jarring machine Bis then set in motion by means of the 'operating Huid entering the valve mechanism 12 from the pipe 13 and passing under the plunger 2 through the port 11 so that the said plunger is thus raised in the cylinder 3 un til the desired height is attained at which time the operating fluidis exhausted from the same and the plunger drops'in said cylinder so thatthe posts 1 0 will strike upon the metal blocks 9 in the projections 6 and thus jar the lsand in the flask a. As soon as the table 1 and plunger 2 are thus dropped and the sandhas been jarred in said flask a the operating-fluid will again be admitted to the valve mechanism flask has been Jar-red to the required degree During this operation 4the trunnions 33 on the upright extensions 31 have been entering and leaving the tapered groove, 39 in the inner face of the trunnion plate 38 but the bottoms of said trunnions have not struck the bottoms of said grooves as suliicient clearance is left to prevent the saule from striking. During this operation the turnover fcctly stationary and the device is not used until after the molding sand in the flask a has been jarred to the required degree of solidity. y
After the jarring operation is completed the flask a will be covered by a bottom board 91 and the flask and board then fastened to the turnover plate 26 by means of the clamps 29 which engage with the tongue grooves 28 in said plate and over the top of said board.
At this stage operating Huid is admitted to the rear of the piston 19 in the cylinder 15 by means of the pipe 15 connecting therewith so that the said pistonwill move forward i-n said cylinder which operation will push the connecting rod 20 forward and thus rotate the crank 21 which is securely fastened to'one ofthe square portions 18 of the shaft 17 so that the said shaft will thus he also rotated by such operation. Since the turnover arms 34 are each connected to a square portion of the shaft 17 this movement will raise the saine with the center of said shaft as the axis of rotation. The trunnions 33 will engage with the tapered grooves 39 in the inner face of the 12 andthe Voperatlon repeated until the' sand in said arms 34 have remained per-l irunnion plate 3b' and as the turnover arms 34 are raised the turnover plate 2G will be lifted carrying with it the pattern b and the sand filled flask a.
It will be noticed that the distance between the centers of the main shaft 17 and the pin E36 in the hole 35 on the end of the turnover arm 34 is considerably greater' than the distance between the centers of the pin 60 in the hole 59 on the extension 57 and the pin 70 in the hole G9 on the locking piece 66 so that as the arms 34 are raised the rod 65 will tend to pull the trunnion plate 38 downward which will turn the turnover plate 26 over and this difference between centers is just suflicieut to rotate the said turnover plate one hall" revolution by the time the arms 34 have reached a vertical position. As the turnoyer plate E2G is thus rotated and the trunnion plate 38 is pulled over by the rod 65 the curved groove 67 in the locking piece 66 will extend over the top'of the trun- V y nion 33 and tapered groove 39 so as to prevent said trunnion from leaving said tapered groove and when the arms 34 have gone a .short distance the turnover plate 26 and flask` a thereon will be supported by said trunnion resting 1n said curved groove. When such arms have reached a vertical position the lug 40 on the trunnion plate 38 will strike against the pin 45 in the enlarged portion 42 so that the spiral spring 44 in the chamber 4Q will be compressed by the plate 46 and the jarring taken from the ,mold and arms 34 so that said arms can come to rest without any shock.
The spiral spring 44 in the chamber 42 will also serve as a leveling device for the turnover plate as the tension thereon can be regulated by means of adjusting the` plate 46' which is governed by the screw 47.
During this operation the connecting rod 20 will have advanced so that the outer end 'ot the same connecting to the crank 21 will extend into the interior of the crank case cover 16 and the spiral springs 25a will be compressed by the piston 19 which also aids in preventing shocks to the working parts and the mold.
The flask and turnover plate have now been revolved one half revolution so that the flask is underneath and directly above the equalizingtable 74a carried by the plate 74 on the plunger 72. The plunger 72 is novv raised in the cylinder 71 by means of operating fluid which is admitted to said cylinder from the port 73 and the equalizin table 74a is pressed against the bottom hoar 91 with suflicient force to overcome the pres- -sure of the side beams against the friction on account of said table -being adapted to` assume any required position to provide for irregularities in such surface. At the salue time the spiral springs 8S which operate loosely on the rods 86 will prevent the plunger 72 and table 741`from shocks by their'bearing'against the lower cnd of 'the extensions and being compressed by the Washers 89 on the ends of such rods.
The clamps 29 are now removed from the flask a and turnover plate 26 and the compressed air is admitted to the vibrator 48 so that the pattern is gently vibrated in order to loosen the same from the molded sand which is necessary in order to enable the same to be withdrawn without injury to the mold. The operatingr fiuid is now slowly exhausted f. om the cylinder 71 and the plunger 72 .will thus be lowered therein so that the Haslr a containing the molded sand will be lowered on the equalizing table 74" and the pattern b Aremain suspended from the turnover plate 26. As the plunger 72 nears the bottom of the cylinder 71 the spiral springs 87 which rest on the top of the extensions 85 will be engaged by the bottom of the plate 74 and compressed so that said plunger will be stopped gently without any jar or vibration on the molded sand in the flask c resting on the equalizing table 74a.
The turnover plate 26 is now ready to be returned to its original position on the table 1 of the jarring machine B and this is accomplished by means of exhausting the opy necting rod with the same which will rotatev the shaft 17 through the medium of` the .crank 21 and thus throw the said arms backward after which the weight of the same and the turnover plate Q6 will be sufficient to exhaust the operating fluid from the cylinder 15 and thus allow the said plate and turnover arms to assume their original position.
It will thus be seen that after the sand in the flask has been completely jarred to the required degree of solidity the same will be mechanically turned over and the pattern drawn from the same so that the mold can be taken away and the liquid metal poured into the same which will be of great advantage where the castings are of large size and hard to handle.
The equalizing table 7 4 is so constructed that it can assume any plane desired under the flask so as to allow for the irregularities 130V' of the bottom boards and to provide a steady surface for supporting the flask containing the molded sand as the pattern is being withdrawn from the same. On account of its peculiar construction it can be pressed against the flask or bottom board and made to assume any reasonable lane necessary while the tension of' the riction springs will be great enou h to prevent 'the weight of the flask and mo the plane produced by the surface of the tom of the flask and bottom boardV when the operating fluid acted upon the plunger carrying the same.
It will further be noticedthat the device will not require an great amount of space for installation as practically all of the same with the exception of the turnover arms and equalizin low the Hoor line Wg such machines have been installed.
Various modifications and changes in the design, construction and application of our improved turnover and pattern drawing device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrifie-Q ing any of its advantages. y
