. The present invention relates to mold making machines and particularly to that class of machines where one or more'ot the flask parts are attached to the machine, al-.
though the invention insome of its aspects is adapted for embodii'nent in machines using,
a separate flask for each mold.
The primary object of the present invention is-to provide mechanism which eliminates the hand ramn'iin'g found to be necessary as a finishing operation for packing molding sand in a flask; particularly around the edges thereofleve'n where the machine includes a jarring table orawsqueeze head or plate or both. I v Another object of the invention is to provide mechanism for this purpose which is adapt-ed'at times to overlie the flask, and at times tobe moved clear thereof in order that the flask may be readily filled with sand.
A furtherobject is to provide suchmechanism which can be readily raised and lowered with respect to the flask.
A still further object is'to provide such a, device which is so mountedas-to have free vertical reciprocating movementwith respect to the flask filled withsand'and which, when used in combination witha jarring table, descends upon the sand, packing it in the flask at the end of each jarring stroke, being liited on the sand'on the upward stroke and following down on the sand by gravity and packing the sand in the flask upon each downward stroke thereof during j a-rring.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, by way of example, a preferredembodiment of the invention but which are not to lie-taken as adefinition of the limit-sthereof, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.

which is movable upwardly and downwardly with respect to a stationary piston 22 fixed livered to it through suitablepipe lines and controlled by the valve 3 which, in the present embodiment oi the invention, also controls the cope arring table 30. A mold assembly and transfer table, indicated generally at 35, is placed between the cope mold forming part ot the machine and the drag mold forming part ot' the machine. As shown in l, the mold assembly and trans for table ma c mprise vertical side stand ards 37 carrying at their upper ends pair of longitudinally extending parallel sta-- tionary rails 38, to which are secured the downwardly and inwardly extending brack- "ets 39 carrying the grooved rollers eO, upon which a lower pair of connected parallel guide rails 42 ar-eadapted to travel back and forth. ecured by links t3 to the rails 42 are an upper pair of connected parallel mold lifting and transfer rails 46 adapted at times .to descend and rest upon the lower guide rails 42, lowering a mold upon the stationary rails 88, and at times to lift the mold from said stationary rails and carry it away from the machine. This or similar mechanism is found to be highly desirable with such a machine as that herein. described in order to provide mechanical means for carrying off the molds which are produced very rapidly by the machine.
Referring now more particularly to 2, which showsin sectional. elevation the interior of the drag mold carryingcylinder at the left-hand side of Fig. 1, upon a suitable foundation is mounted the base 24, which supports the jarring table casing 51, within which is located the arring cylinder and piston for jarring the drag table 11. The stationary piston 22 is .l'ix y mounted to the base or the machine within a deep annular flange 57, in which the piston is keyed, as at 58, to prevent relative movement at the piston with respect to the base of the machine.
The upper end of the piston is provided with a central opening, within which is secured a threaded abutment plug 59, the upper surface of which is provided with a plurality of radial channels and air inlet ports 61. A packing plate 62is provided on the top surface of the upper end of the piston 22 se cured thereto by bolts or other means, and the under side of the head 42 is recessed to provide clearance'for such bolts and to mit the cylinder head 63, in lowered position, to abut against the upper face of the plug 59, upon which the weight of the cylinder 21 is carried in its lowered position, the radial channels in the face of the plug 59 communicating with the air inlet ports 61, permitting air to travel from the interiorot' the piston to the expanding chamber between the piston and cylinder head. 7

The head 63 of the cylinder 21 is provided with the vertically extending cylindrical projection 75, which revolnbly carries the sleeve portion 76 of an arm 77,.which carries the sand packing to]- lower device of the present invention, as will be described more'particularly hereinafter. The drag pattern 12 is provided with the bottom board clamping hooks 80 and the drag positioning pins 81, which accurately locate the drag 13 upon the drag pattern. The operation'is as follows: Referring particularly to Fig. 2, assuming it is desired to- .make a drag mold, the. drag 13 is placed on the dragpattern 12 carried by arms 19, and the frame 85 is placed on the drag 13. Molding sand now introduced "into the drag and pattern sufficient to extend above the top of the frame 85,;The arm 77 is now swung into position over theflask and the lever 115- is raised to the position of Fig. 2, permitting the cam rollers to ride down on the cams, and thus lowering the shaft 105 and the sand} packing follower member 106'-down to rest upon the sand, as shown in Fig. 2. NVhen suflicient jarring and'packing has occurred, the lever 115 is lowered,'causing the loam rollers 108 and 109" to ride upwardly on the cams 112 and 113, thereby raising the shaft 105 and sand packing follower member 106 up off the sand, the detent'118 holding the parts in'this position; The arm 77 is nows'wung' in a horizontal plane to remove the sand packing follower mechanism from its position over the flask. The frame 85 is now removed and the surplus sand struck off above the upper edges of the drag-v 13. Any suitable form of bottom board is now placed upon the filled and packed drag and secured in position by retaining hooks 80 in the usual manner. The valve 25 is now operated to raise the cylinder 21, and hence the filled drag and pattern, abovethe table 11, into a position where the drag may be rolled over on 'its'trunnions 132 rotatably mounted in the guide blocks 134 vertically movable in the outer ends of .the arms 19. lVhen the drag assembly has been rolled over, the cylinder 21 is rotated about the piston 56 until the rolled over drag is brought above theassembling and transfer table 35, whereupon the valve 25 is operated to lower the cylinder on the piston 56 until the bottom board rests upon the table. The hooks are now released and the cylinder 7 0 is raised vertically by operating valve 25 to draw the pattern 12. The arm 70 is again brought to its former position, shown in Fig. 2.-
I Meanwhile, by similar steps, a cope mold pattern 12, and the process is repeated. The table 35 not onlyserves-as an assembling table, but also as a transfer table to remove the molds assoon as they are closed.
It will thus be seen thatthe present invention provides mechanism particularly adapted to a jarring machine and whichpacks the sand down into the flask from above at each stroke of the jarring operation. This mechanism eliminates the customary and: usual hand work to pack the sand in the flask, particularly around the flask edges. It is to be observed that the sand packing follower member is freely vertically movable during operation and may be lifted up off the sand and .held in raised position and may also be swung in a horizontal plane out of the way for filling the flask.
"What is claimed is: v
1. In a molding machine, a jarring table for jarring a flask containing molding sand, relatively movable piston and cylinder mem bers, a flask carried by one of said members and movablevertically with respect thereto, and a sand packing follower member carried by one of said members and freely vertically movable with respect thereto, for packing sand in said flask during jarring thereof.
2. In a molding machine, a jarring table for jarring a flask containing molding sand, a stationary piston, a cylinder member vertically movable thereon, a flask carried by ing movement in a straight line during ring, said sand packing follower means being 7 said cylinder over said arring table, an arm carried by said cylinder over said flask, a shaft mounted in said arm for vertical reciprocating movement therein, a sand packing follower member fixed to said sha ft and adapted to pack sand in said flask during jarring, means for raising said shaft and holding it in raised position, means for releasing said shaft to permit free vertical reciprocating movement of said shaft and. of
shaft and adapted to pack sand in said flask during jarring, means for raising said shaft and holding it inraised position, means for releasing said shaft'to permit free vertical reciprocating movement of said shaft and of said sand packing follower member 'on the sand in said flask during jarring.
4. In a molding machine, a jarring table for jarring a-flask containing molding sand, sand packing follower means mounted for free vertical movement above said table for packing sand in said flask during jarring thereof, means for guiding said sand packing follower means vertically for free reciprocatpivotally mountedto swing in a horizontal plane into position over said jarring table or away fromsnch position, andvcam means for raising said sand packing follower means 'to inoperative position. v
5. In a molding machine, a jarring-table for jarring a flask containing molding sand, sandpacking follower means mounted for free vertical movement above said table for packing sand in said flask during jarring thereof, means for guidingsaid sand packing follower means vertically for free reciprocating movement in a straight line during jarring, said sand packing follower means being pivotally mounted to swing in a horizontal plane into position over said jarring table or away from such position, and lever operated cam means for raising or lowering said sand packing follower -means in a straight vertical line. g
