To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, NATHAN O'r'riNcna, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Correspondence Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improves ments in correspondence means and particularly to a device combining the functions of letter paper and envelops, containing upon itself both the address of the addressee and the written or printed matter forming the subject of the correspondence, and which can only be opened by breaking the seal, or, when unsealed, by utilizing the opening device.
An object of the invention is to provide an article of this' character which may be readily and 'conveniently placed in a type- Writing machine, or written by hand, and the'entire letter written and addressed in a single operation, thereby resulting in a great saving of time and paper, impossibility, as under the present method of using paper and envelops, of confusing envelops and letters, and obviating the necessity of writing the addressees name and address twice as with the old method of having envelop's and lottato. Another object is to preserve in a single sheet they address portion and paper, thereby keeping as a future reference postmarks, dates, etc. A still further object is to provide such a device which may, though it need not be manufactured from a single sheet of paper, and which will be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

The contacting portions of the flap 12 and the portion 11 are pasted or otherwise; fastened together, thereby forming a pocket for the reception of the lower part of the portion 10. The right hand side of the portion .11, it` will be noticed, isvopenrto permit the insertion of such lower part` as clearly illus-` trated in Fig. 3. The portion'sll, 1Q and 13, or any of them, in this or any of the foregoing forms, may be given a diagonal or any other shape not inconsistent with the performance of similar functions, the diagonal shape bein illustrated in Fig. 5. Vlhen the device isf unsealed, the same may then be readily removed. If desired, the obstruction and the flap formed by the cutout portion 15a may be suitably reinforced, so as to strengthen the contacting edges.

The left handroorner of the portion 10 is rounded asin the foregoing construction, shown in Figs. 6 to 9. In this form, I have shown additional writing sheets formed integral with the portion 10, and which may be folded therewith along previously prepared lines of folding or score lines and placed beneath the retaining means. These additional sheets comprise a portion 16c extending at the'right of the lower part of the portion 10 Vand a portion 16d extending upwardly from the portion 16. The portion 1Gc is of a width correspending to the width of the portion 10, less the width of the portion 12, and the portion 16d is less than the portion 16c an amount corresponding to the width of the portion 13. When the letter is completed, the portion 16d is folded downwardly upon the portion 16C, and this is then folded inwardly upon the portion lO, whereupon the device may be closed in the ordinary manner. In this form, instead of the slot 13b, I have provided perforations 16e in the portion 13. Other forms of locking means performing substantially the same purpose as those hereinbefore shown, may be employed.
In Figs. 12 and 1,3, lA have illustrated a form of my invention intended for open or unsealed letters, such as circulars, advertisements, business announcements, etc. In this construction, the pocket isformed in a similar manner to that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, with the exception that the right hand edge of the portion 11 is closed by means of an extension 17, and the lower right hand corner of the portion 10 is rounded, as at 18. An ungumnied flap 19 is provided at the right hand side of the upper section of portion 10, having an upwardly extending por tion 20 thereon. When the letter is Vcompleted, the same is folded in a manner simi-V lar to that described with reference to theY forms shown in Figs. 1 to 4, and thereupon the ungummed flap 19 is folded over and the extension 2O inserted under the portion 11, as clearly shown in F ig. 13. This construction securely maintains the letter closed for all ordinaryT purposes, while at the same time it may be readily opened when desired.
In Figs. 14 to 16, I have shown a form of my invention requiring a double folding of the paper. An enlarged sheet 21 is provided along the left half of its upper edge with a portion 22 having an extension 22a thereon, and along the upper half of the left edge of the sheet :21, a portion 23 having an elongated slot 24 along the folding line thereof is provided. The portion 22 is providedalong its upper edge, and between such edge andthe extension 2Q, with a out-out portion 22 which registers with the slot 24 when the deviceis folded. Y A gummed flap 25 is provided on the right hand edge of the sheet 21 opposite the slot 24, having a thread 26 along the folding line thereof. In forming the device, the flap is folded inwardly upon the portion 21 and the portion 22 is folded downwardly thereon, the extension 22a being pasted or otherwise fastened to the underside of the portion 21, and the contacting portion of the flap Q3 and portion 22 being pasted or otherwise fastened together.
When the letter is completed, the portion :21 is first folded along the longitudinal line of folding and inserted beneath the pocket, and is then folded along the vertical line of folding, whereupon the gummed flap 25 may be passed through the slot 24 and pasted to the underside of the portion 21. This form permits the use of a large sheet of paper, or if desired, a relatively smaller retaining portion.
In Figs. 17 and 18, I have shown a still further modified form, in which the folded device has a triangular shape. The blank from which this is formed is constructed in the shape of a square 27, pro-vided at the upper edge Vwith a flap 28 and at the left odge with a flap 29. The flap :29 is folded upon the square :27, and the flap 28 is folded down and pasted or otherwise fastened along the contacting portion to the flap 29, thereby forming a pocket. Wfhile it will remain closed of itself, a slot 30 is provided in the upper left hand corner of the pocket,V formed by the aps 28 and 29, and a. gummed tab or flap Slis providedat the lower right hand corner of the sheet 27, which upon folding of the paper from corner to corner along the dotted lines indicated, is placed in the said slot and pasted upon the outer side of the pocket to seal the device.
The slot and gummed flap for sealing or closing may be placed in any osition on the flap or flaps forming a poc ret, or on the body of the sheet.
With this present invention, a very inox pensive'improved correspondence device is produced (adapted for all kinds of correspondence including letters, telegrams, bill hea-ds, or other correspondence), which may be, but need not be, stamped or out from a. single piece of paper, and will prove eilicient and practical in use. The present invention possesses many advantages. Among these advantages are the'following.
ljVith my` improved device, it will be noted that all r'natters recorded upon the device, such: aspostemarks, etc., are inseparably preserved, thus preventing lawsuits or other disputes arising out of the question of the date of mailing or receipt of a particular letter or the substitution of the contents.
The necessity of writing the name and address of the addressee more than once is avoided, and also the mistakes which sometimes happen under theV old system, of writing the name and address differently upon the envelop than upon the letter. After the letter is written, thesame may be closed with a single `folding and sealin operation, and made ready for delivery, orming an absolutely closed pocket, in which may be placed any foreign matters desired. such for instance, as coins, samples, etc.
My improved device lends itself readily to many uses, such for instance as social corre spondence, telegranis, circulars, ete., and in any Vof these adaptations proves convenient, economical. and an eflicient substitution for Van envelop andletter paper, usually employed.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is obvious thatchanges may be made thereimwithin the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.V
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a sheet Vof materiall foldable to form two or more folds, one of saidV folds having a permanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon, extending in one of its principal dimensions, in proximity to a considerable part of an edge, which edge is adjacenta line of folding, and leaving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold heilig of a size to extend beyond the bounds of the exposed portion of the first mentioned fold and above the retaining member, a portion of such'extension being insertible beneath the retainino' member, a holding iiap on said sheet adapted to be utilized after folding, to hold the same closed.
2. In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldable to form two or more folds, one of said folds having a permanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon. extending in one of its principal dimensions, in proximity toV a considerable part of an edge, which edge is adjacent a line of folding, and lea-ving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold being of a sizeto extend beyond the bounds of the exposed portion of the first mentioned foldV and above the retaining member; a portion of such extension being insertible beneath the retaining member, a holding flap on said sheet adapted to be utilized jafter' folding,r to hold the Vsame closed, and Vlocking means provided on said sheet beneath said retaining member,V said locking means adapted to lock said sheetA closed, said meansV permitting easy opening and closing of the sheet when the said securing means is inmerativfe 3. l. A device of the character described, comprising a sheet of material foldable to form tivoV or more folds, one of said folds having arpermanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon, said retaining member being attached, along two of its` principal dimensions, in proximity to a considerable portion of each of two contiguous `edges of said fold, one of which edges is adjacent` a line folding, each of the remaining edges of said fold heilig open for a considerable distance, said retaining member being considerably less in area than said fold and leaving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold being of a. size to ex tend beyond the bounds of the exposed portion `of the first mentioned fold and above the retaining member, a portion of said extension being insertible beneath the retainingmember by rotary movement of said fold about the end portion of said line of folding in proximity to said retainingr member, the insertible portion when inserted extending along a considerable portion of each of two edges of said first mentioned fold, one of which'edges `is adjacent said line of folding, the otheredge being opposed to said line of folding, said retaining member adapted to exert a holding force on said last." mentioned fold longitudinally and transversely and holding means on said sheet adapted to be utilized after folding to hold the same folded.
5. In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldable to form two or more folds, one of said folds having a permanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon, said retainingmember being-attached, along two ofV its principal fdimensio'ns, yin proximity to a considerable portion of each of two contiguous edgesiof'said fold, one of which edges vis adjacent a line of folding, the other edge being opposed to said line of folding, each of the remaining edges of said foldY being Vopen for a considerable distance, said retaining member being considerably less in area lthan said fold and leaving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold being of a size to extend beyond the bounds of the exposed portion of the `first mentioned fold and above the retaining member, a portion of said extension being insertible beneath the retaining member, the insertible portion extending along a considerable portion of each of two edges of said last mentioned fold, one of which edges is adjacent said line of folding-the other edge being opposed to said line of folding, and a cut in the sheet along said line of folding at the end thereof to enable the aforesaid portion of the last mentioned fold to be inserted beneath said retaining member.
6. In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldable to form two or more folds, one of said folds having a permanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon, said retaining member being attached, along two of its principal dimensions, in proximity to a considerable portion of each of two contiguous edges of said fold, one of which edges is ad jacent a line of folding, the other edge being opposed to said line of folding, each of the remaining edges of said fold being open for a considerable distance, said sheet of material being provided with sealing means, said retaining member being considerably less in area than said fold and leaving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold being of a size to extend beyond the bounds of the expo-sed portion of the first mentioned fold and above the retaining member. a portion of said extension being insertible beneath the retaining member, the insertible portion extending along a considerable portion of each of two edges of said last mentioned fold, one of which edges is adjacentV said `line of folding-the other edge being opposed to said line of folding.
7. In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldable to form two or more folds, one of said folds having a permanent and stationary retaining member superimposed thereon, said retaining memf Y ber being attached, along two of itsgprin cipal dimensions, in proximity to a considerable portion of each of two contiguous edges thereof, one of which edges is adjacent. a line of folding, the other edge bein opposed to said line of folding, said fol being open for a considerable distance along each of the remaining edges thereof, another fold being insertible beneath the retaining member by rotary movement of said fold about the end portion of said line of fold- Vsheet adapted to be utilized after VVdi'ately upon the inner side ofthe first mentioned ifold, said retaining member exerting a holding force on saidV fold longitudinally and transversely and holding means on said sheet adapted to be utilized after folding to hold the same folded.
8. In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldablo to form two or more folds, one of said folds having permanent and stationary retaining members superimposed thereon, said retaining'members being attached, along their principal dimensions, in Vproximity to a considerable portion of cach of two contiguous edges of said fold, one of which edges is adjacent a line of folding, the other edge being opposed to said line of folding, each of the other two edges of said fold being open for a considerable distance, said retaining members being considerably less in area than said fold and leaving the remainder of said sheet exposed, another fold being of a size to extend beyond the bounds of the exposed portion of the first mentioned fold and above the retaining members, a portion of such extension being insertible beneath the retaining members, by rotary movement of said fold above the end portion of said line of folding in proximity to said retaining member, the insertible portion extending along a considerable portion of each of two edges of said last mentioned fold, one of which edges is adjacent said line of folding, the other edge being opposed to said line of folding, said retaining members exerting aholding force on said fold longitudinally and transversely and holding means on said folding to hold the same folded.
9. lln a device of the character described, a. sheet of metal foldable to form two or more folds, one of said folds having a stationary retaining member permanently fastened thereto so as to form with said fold a permanent pocket of which the said fold constitutes the under side, and the retaining memberthe upper side, one transverse extremity of said retaining memberV being intermediate the ends of said sheet of material, said retaining' member being disposed in its entirety at one side of a line of folding, said retaining member being attached along one of its principal dimensions in Aproximity to a considerable portion of an edge of said fold, which edge is adjacent said line of folding, and fastened along one of its other dimensions transversely to said last mentioned edge, another fold of said sheet beginning at said line of folding and extending therefrom in the other direction from the fold having the said retaining member, said retaining member adapted to receive a considerable portion of the edge of said last mentioned fold, said edge corresponding to said edge of the first mentioned fold in proximity to which the said retaining member is attached, both of said edges being adjacent said line of folding.

In a device of the character described, a sheet of material foldable to form two or more i'olds, one of said folds having a stationary retaining member permanently fastened lhereto so as to form with said fold a permanent pocket of which the said fold constitutes the under side, and the retaining member the upper side, one transverse extremityY of said retaining member being ,intermediate the ends of said sheet of material. said retaining member being disposed in its entirety at one side of a line of Efolding, said retaining member being attached along one its principal dimensions in proxiinity to a considerable portion of an edge of said fold, which edge is adjacentsaid line of folding,iand fastened along one of its other dimensions transversely to said :last mentioned edge, another fold of said sheet beginning at said line of folding and extending therefrom in the othery direction from the said fold haring the said retaining member, said retaining member adapted to receive a Considerable portion of the edge of said last mentioned fold, said edge corresponding to said edge of the first nientioned fold in proximity to which the said retaining member is attached, both of said edges being adjacent said line of folding, and said retaining member being less in area than said first mentioned fold.
