STENOGRAPHEB S NQTE IBOOK STAND AND BOOK-MARK.
To all whom it may] concern Be it known thatI, VILLIAM M. Bnarr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk andStat'e of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenographers NoteBook Stands and Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in'book marks combined with an improvement in book rests.
The primary objects of the book mark are to provide a means for finding a page in a book easily and to provide a simple and practical means for shifting such page-finding device as the leaves of the book are turned, 'the device meanwhile remaining firmly attached to the book.
The primary object of the book rest is to provide a simple and practical means for holding a stenographers note-book or other book so that the person reading, copying, or transcribing the contents of such book may have the same in a convenient position for so doing and at the same time be able without difiiculty or complex action to turn the pages and secure them from turning by accident.
Another object of the combined parts is to provide a book mark and book rest which can remain attached to a note book without inconvenience While a person is writing thereinand can be thereafter quickly and easily set up as a book rest or easel so that the notes can be read or transcribed with the book at a convenient angle for such pur- 3088. 1 With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ing forming a part of the present application; in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the holder with the note book shown in dot and dash lines;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the book in full lines; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 41- is a detail perspective view of a modified form of the holder.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed August 5, 1916. "Serial No. naei'o.
throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates generally my improved holder supporting a note book 6.
The holder 5 comprises two sides 'T'and' 8 disposed in angular relation as shown in Figsfl" and? in order that the book 6 will be supported so that the contents thereof can bereadily observed.
The side 7 ofthe holder 5 comprises a single strand of resilient material such as spring wire and is bent to include spaced rods 10 which extend under one side of the book and support the cover thereof. The rods 10 are bent outwardly as at 11 adjacent to the lower ends thereof and then backwardly upon themselves as at 12 forming hooks 13 which engage the opposite edges of the cover as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
As the material is resilient, the hooks 13 can be drawn outwardly and then brought into engagement with the cover firmly gripping the same and preventing any undesired displacement.
The lower loop connecting the rods 10 are bent as at it producing a gripping finger 15 adapted to engage the loose leaves of the note book as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and preventing their displacement.
With this gripping finger formed as heretofore stated it will be noted that several substantially parallel units as a and b are produced, the latter of which being disposed in a plane a sufficient distance from that occupied by the former to permit the pages of a book to be retained in a compact condition between them without disfiguring the pages thus held.
The rods 10 are bent and extended downwardly at an angle as shown at 16 constituting the side 8 of the holder and then bent upwardly forming spring wire fingers 17 which hold the leaves of the opposite side of the book in position as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a note book holder is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
For example, one of the hooks 17 may be plng brace the device and hold it together or the Wires 16 may be twisted, as at 16, together and spread apart again for the same pur pose.
'In practice the stenographer Will slip the part 16 away from the book and back so that the cover with Whic1116 Wasengaged by .1717 ill be free and page can then be Written on.. After Writing the notes; the part 16 Will be engaged to the book by slipthe hooks l7 17 over the remaining leaves, thus setting the holder up as aneasel. Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new and patentable is ,1. An article of manufacture consisting in the presence of a single strand of Wire having opposed hooks formed adjacent its medial portion and a page gripping finger formed from its medial portion.
2.-An article of manufacture consisting of a single strand of Wire having opposed hooks-formed adjacent its medial portion and a page gripping finger formed from its medial portion and occupying a plane substantially at right angles to that in which saidopposed hooks'aredisposed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature oftWo witnesses. Y
