Description
UNITED STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
N. C. SANFORD, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
SKATE.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,427, dated February 20, 1855; Reissued February 7', 1860, No. 895.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, N. C. SANFORD, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification,
said drawing being a side view of my improved skate.
The nature of my invention consists in' by a spring D.
E, represents the runner which is' attached to the stock A, said runner having two knees F, F, connected to it which knees are screwed into the stock, one knee in the part B, and the other in the part C, of the stock. The portion of the runner between the knees F, F, is made suiiciently thin so as to spring or be elastic.
The spring D, may be of any proper form provided that it is so arranged or attached to the two parts B, C, of the stock A, as to prevent any lateral play or movement of the two parts.
The stock A may be Constructed of wood, and the runner E, of steel brought to a spring temper. The spring D, may be formed of a steel plate of the width of the stock at the point where it is secured to the two parts B, C, 4theplate being curvent or bent as represented in the drawing, or springs of other forms may be used. By constructing the skate in this manner, it is made to yield to the motions of the foot and is decidedly preferable to the rigid and inflexible skates inuse. It is not so tiresome to the foot and in other respects is more agreeable to the wearer.
I do not claim kmerely forming the stock of two parts for that has been previously done, but
What I claim asnew and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-
Having the stock A, of the skate formed of two parts B, C, and connected by a spring D, when said stock is combined, or used in connection with, an elastic or spring runner E, for the purpose as herein set forth.
N. o. SANFORD'.
