*FILING APPLIANCE.
I To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. HIOK, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use Y atively mounted in a case'or cabinet in which they are adapted to be singly or collectively rotated from upright to reclined position for giving access to both, sides of each holder.
The improvement relates more particularly to thatclass of filing appliances in which a series of bill holders are normally placed in upright position and have their lower ends hinged together; andfinfwhich the foremost holder] is supported on a a pivotal bearing, while the rearmost holder is supported andguided by suitable meansfor' holding it in upright position, during the operation 'ofthe other holders, and all the holders are normally held in upright position by the action of gravity.
The object .of-the present invention is to provide improved'means for supporting and guiding theirearmost holder of the series so that it will be maintainedin upright positionfat all times. during the operation of the forward holders of the series. This object is attained by providing a movable car: riage with upright guideways therein for controlling the movements of the rearmost holder during the operation of the other holders, and with horizontal guideways therein having sliding engagement with the hinged end ofthe foremost holder.
.7 A preferredqembodiment of the invention,
. thus'set forth in general terms, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming Fig. 3, a detached perspective View of the bearing plate 7; and
Fig. 4:, a detached perspective VlGW' of the controlling carriage.
Similar numerals refer tosimilar parts throughout the drawings. e p
The case may be composed of the sub' awed oet, 9 1917.
stantially rectangular bottom or base sec'-' tion 1 and the top or cover section 2', which may be operatively connected together'by means of the guiding hinge brackets 3, one bracket being located on each side of the rear end portion of. the base section, by
means of which the cover section can be swung and sh fted upon the base section-to ali'ne eith'er'the top or rear'endof the cover section with the -rear end of theb'ase section,"
as more fully set forth in my eo-pending application filedfJuly 27,1914, Serial No,
The series of bill holders land 4 are hinged together at the lower rear ends, and
thepivot 5 between two adjoining 'intermediate holders and 4? may ber'nounted in hearings 6 formed or securedon the pro truding edge of thjejbearing plate 7, which is secured to the rear endof the cove'r'seca tion {or the case so that theholders above I J this bearing may be referred to as the upper division of the series, and the holders below this hearing maybe referred to as the lower division of the series.
Thelower' forward holder 4?. of theseries may be pivoted at '8 tothe rear end of the frame 9,'which may carry an index, not
shown, {for the bill'holders; and this frame may vnorm ally rest upon the jointed'tracks 10 havingtheir, forward'ends pivoted in the forward jendj' ofthe "base section and their rear ends resting and sliding on the bottom there-of; which tracks may serve to support and guide-the forward end of the frame upward and over the forward rim of the base section during the opening and closing operation of the cover section of the case.-
The jointed tracks 10 also be provided with suitable spring means, a,s 11,;for
thrusting the tracks upward to elevate and sustain the rear end of theframe 9 ffor th'e properv operation "of the lowergdivisio'n of bill holders l, 4:? and "4 but these devices, whieh are made the subject-matter of co-,pending, applicationfiled July 23, 1914,
serial; No; 853',600, donot form an patter the invention claimed herein, which is concerned more particularly with the operation of the upper division oi the series of bill holders 4, 4 and 4".
The bearing plate 7 is secured to the rear end wall 12 of the cover section of the case and is carried into horizontal position when the cover section is rotated into upright position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this position these parts may be referred to as a support for the upper division of holders. The bearing plate 7 may also have the upward and inward turned L-flanges 13 on its side edges to form guides for the controlling carriage. I
The controlling carriage is composed of the upright back plate 14 having forwardly turned flanges '15 on the side edges, which, in turn, are provided with the inwardly turned flanges 16 in their lower portions forming the channel guideways 17 adapted to engage the side edges of the rearmost holder t for guiding it upward and downward as one or more of the foremost holders of the upper division are operated from upright to reclined position, and vice versa.
The back plate 14 is also provided with the brackets 18, one being formed or secured on each lower corner thereof; and each of these brackets is preferably provided with a wheel or roller 19 adapted to ride forward and rearward upon the rear end 12 of the cover section of the case when the same is in horizontal position to serve as a support for the carriage. The lower corners of the back plate and the flanged portions thereof are cut away or notched as at 20 to receive the flange guides 13 formed on the side edges of the bearing plate 7 by means of which the controlling carriage is directed and held truly in transverse position during its forward and rearward movements.
The brackets 18 are provided with the forwardly projecting plates 21 provided with the longitudinal slots 22 adapted to receive and operate on the guiding pivot pins 23 projecting laterally from the lower end portion of the foremost bill holder 1 of the upper division adjacent to the hinged end thereof; which pivot pins by their engagement in the horizontal ways formed by the slotted bracket plates, serve to hold the back plate 1 1 in upright position during its forward and rearward movement in the operation of the holders. The location of the pivot pins 23, with reference to the pivot 5 in the bearing 6, may be such that when the foremost frame 4 of the division is rotated into reclined position, the pivot 23 will be slightly elevated, thereby tilting the back plate 14: slightly rearward as the controlling carriage moves forward with the 'rea rmost holder 41, as shown in- Fig. 2. In the opera tion of one or more of the upper division of bill holders it is evident that when the rearmcst holder is carried forward and rearward by the rotation of the foremost holders, it also moves upward and downward; during which upward and downward movement it slides and is held in upright position by the guideways 17 on the sides of the back plate i l; and during which forward and rearward movements the controlling carriage travels forward and rearward by riding on the wheels 19 and sliding upon the pins 23 operating in the slots 22, which serves to'maintain the guideways 17 in upright position at all tlmes.
