FILING APPLIANCE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed August 6, 1917. Serial No. 184,608.
for sales bills and other similar papers in which a plurality of bill holders are operatively mountedl upon a suitable table or base for swinging either separately or collectively into upright or reclined position for giving accessto the' tiling faces of the holders; and the' object oftheimprovement is to provide a movable abutment for the rearmost holder of the series,which will oscillatefto and fro with the operation of one or more holders so as'to sustain the upright holders in a substantially vertical position.
Further objects of the improvement are to mount the' movable abutment in such a manner that the weight of the upright holders will not only 'tend to hold'them in upright position'but will serve to counterbalance the weight of the holders which are being operated from upright into reclined position and vice versa; and 'also in such a manner that the abutment ymay be adjusted'to accommodate the addition or subtractionl of a considerable number of holders to or from the series without changing any other parts of the appliance.
Theseobjects of the invention and other ancillary advantages are attained by the conn struction, mechanism and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 1s a upright position upon a table and a surrounding case or cabinet; p y
Fig. 2,'is a side elevation of the filing appliance with the lupper part of the case brokeny away, as on line 2--2, Fig. 1, showing the series of bill holdersin normal :upright position;
Fig. 3,2; similar'view showing `a consider` able number of the bill holders operated forward into reclined position;
Fig. 4, a detached perspective view of the bill holders showing the controlling pin protruding from the hinged end of an intermediate older;
have'invented certain new and useful frontelevation of the filing appliance showing the bill holders in normal Fig. 5, a detached perspective view of one bearing bracket; andV Fig. 6, a fragmentary perspective view of the abutment carrier guideway.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The series ofbill holders are hinged' to-' gether at their lower rear ends by means of the ears 2 and the pintles 3 in a well known manner, and the pintles 3 of the forward hinge ears 2 of the foremost .holder are mounted on the bearing brackets tsuitably secured on the table k5 formed in'the base 6 of the filing appliance. The rear wall 7 and the rear parts of the side walls 8 of the base f are preferably extended upward to form a case or cabinet for normally receiving and shielding the bill holders when in normal upright position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The abutment carrier 9 is swung upon the pivots 10 at the upper ends'of the parallel links 11, which links are supported at the lower'ends by the pivots 12 mounted in the bearing plates 13 secured to the floor of the preferably carried upon pivot pins 16 se.
cured in one of the series of spaced apertures 17 provided ina row from front to rear in case, there being a pair of parallel links in the upper ends of each side wall 15 of the abutment carrier; which rollers form an abutment for the rearmost holder 1 of the series, as vshown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The upright guidewayl 18 is provided at the lower part of the forward edge of each side wall 15 of the abutment carrier 9, which guideways may be in the form of channels 19 shaped along the forward edges of the flanges 20 suitably securedto the side walls ofthe carrier; and the controlling pins 21 extending laterally each way from the hinged end of one of the bill holders l, referred to herein as'the controlling holder, extend into the guideways'18 for operating the carrier to and fro as one or more of the holders in front vof and including the controlling holder, are operated from one position to another.
The parts are so ranged that when the ill holders are in up-I proportioned and ar-4 f right position they are supported solely by the forward pintles 3 of the foremost holder upon the bearing brackets 4, and by the abutment of the rearmost holder against the rollers 14: mounted 011 the side walls 15 of the carrier 9; and that the carrier in turn issup-y ported solely upon the pivots 10 at the upper endsof-the links 11, the relative position of, which being determined by the operation of the controllinoP pin 21 on the hinged end ofl one of the ho ders inthe guideways 18 on the sides ofthe carrier; and 'finally that'the fulcrum pivots 12 for the lower ends of the parallel vlinks are positioned far. enough forward so that the links will be inclined slightly rearward when the controlling holder has been rotatedv forward into reclinedposition' from which position their upper ends will swing `rearward as the controlling holder and one or vmore of the holders in front'thereof are rotated into upright position. Y
When all the holders are in upright position, itis evident that when the controlling holder or one or more of the holders in front thereof, are swung forward into reclined position, the controlling pins v2,1 will be carried upward and forward with the hinged end of the controlling holder and iny so doing I these pins will slide upward in the guideways 18, thus moving the carrier forward and upward by a swinging of its supporting links, which movement carries the abutment rollers upward and forward so that they will always support and sustain the rearmost holder in substantially upright position; and it is obvious that the upright holders will always be supported solelyby the forward pivot of the foremost upright holder,- and by the bearing of the rearmost holderlupon the abutment roller, so that the weight of the upright holders always tends to rotate the same rearward upon the forward pivotof the foremost holder, which is known as the gravity 7 operation in appliances of this kind.
It is also evident that the weight of the upright holders will' tend to counterbalance the weight of the holders which are being rotated from anupright into a reclined positionuntil the operated holders approach the reclined position and the upper pivot of the foremost reclined holder is carried directly above the-lower pivot thereof, which is -in front ofthe line betweenthe aXis of said lower pivot andthe abutment roller; in which. positionthe weight of the upright holders rhas no tendency to counterbalance theweight of the reclinedholders or to rotate them rearward.
Byiprovidingfthe abutment carrier with abutmentxrollers thereon adjustable-into various positions forward and rearward of the carriergand by controlling the movements of the carrier-by operating means associated with one of the intermediate holders, it is evident that one or more holders in rear of such intermediate holder canl beaddedor subtracted from the series by..merely rshifting the abutment rollers rearward or forwardas the case may be, and without affecting the operation of the appliance as a whole.
Such a construction and arrangement of the appliance permits a customer having a limited trade to purchase a filing appliance with a limited number of holders, say eighty holders adapted to carrylll accounts by the spring clips 22, asl shown inthe draw,- ings; to which maybe added from time-to` time, one or more additional holders,l each carr fino" 20 additional accounts as ma be.
