Specification of Letterslatent.
ROOFING-NAIL.
Application filed May 24., 1916. Serial No. 99,683.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs M. FORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Nails, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide in a roofing nail, a driving stem, a link, and a crowding ring, the ring being adapted to crowd roofing material tightly around the driving stem of a similar nail when applied to a roof in the usual manner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined nail and-link in such manner that the nails when applied will form a continuous chain across the roof.
Another object of my invention is to provide in a link nail, an opening, so that water will not be dammed above the links of the applied nails.
Another object of my invention is to provide a stem that will expose a large amount of friction surface to the board in which it is nailed.
Another object of my invention is to provide in a nail a stem of such shape that the stem will be twisted as the nail is driven into a board.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention as applied toa link nail. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3'is an end view of the link nail.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line A A,.
Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan yiew of a number of link nails applied to a roof, showing the manner in which a corner is turned, while Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail, partly in sec tion, showing the application of my improved link nail.
I apply the invention to a link nail by forming preferably of a round wire, a link as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The ring 12, Figs. -1 and 2, is preferably formed so that the aperture therein tightly fits the stem 13 of the link nail, and when the nails are joined on a roof,as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the ring 12 forces the roofing material back toward-the stem 13 and packs it tightly around this stem making a water tight joint. The ring also is driven somewhat into the top sheet so that a tight joint is made about the ring 12 and the roofing material is actually forced somewhat above the level of the sheet by this crowding action within the ring 12.
A larger link14, Fig. 1, is providedmerely to give an increased holding surface on the roofing paper, and the lip 15 is preferably 'formed. outwardly, as shown. in the drawing, so that water will not accumulate within the. link 14:.
Also as the chain formed by the link nails will extend across the roof and tend to dam water just above them, 1' form the round wire upwardly, as shown at 16, Figs. 1 and 2, so as to leave an opening for the water to pass through, and thus obviate the possibility of the chain acting as a dam on the tion, and gives an increased surface to be exposed to the board in which the nail is driven, and by making the lipbroader on one side of the center linethan on the other Patented Got. 9, 1917.
side of the center line, as plainly shown at 18, Figs. 2 and 3, the nail tends to twist slightly as it is driven into the board, and thus increase its holding power. As the stem 13 is twisted, the link portion would be turned in a circle about the stem were it not that the ring 12, at the opposite end of the link is restrained from moving by thestem 13 of a similar link so that the tension set up by the twisting is maintained and through this means the holding power is increased.
the application I of my invention may be varied in many ways within'the scope of the following claims.
Claims: I 1. As an article of manufacture, a link nail, having a forcing ring at one end thereof, and a comparatively large open ended ring extending from said forcing ring, said open ended ring being adapted to be forced down tightly into a roof to which the nail is applied, by pressure exerted on said forcing ring.
2. As an article of manufacture, a link nail having a forcing ring at one end thereof, a comparatively large open ended ring extending from said forcingring, an upstanda roof.
ing arch spaced from said open ended ring, and a return bend terminating the other end of said link in a driving stem atright angles to the plane of said rings, said stem being 20 adapted to fit said crowding ring of a similar nail, for the purposes specified.
3. As an article of manufacture a link nail having a driving stem, the lower portion of which is of a substantially crescent 25 in the driving stem when it is driven into 30 SILAS roan.
