Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 16, 1917. Serial No. 149,053.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LIZZIE S. CoBURN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Yarn-Holding Reels, of which the follow-' mg is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is to provide a reasonably cheap, and specially convenient form of portable reel, or so called Swifts for use in balling skeined yarns. My said invention is illustrated in and by the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a reel embodying my present improvements. Fig. 2 is a relatively enlarged view of a portion of the post of said reel showing mounted thereon, in central section, the runner and means for locking said runner against endwise movement on the post. Fig. 3 is a detached, detail, view of a clamp by means of which the reel may be supported on the edge portion of a table, or the back of a chair, or other substantial article.

Referring to'these drawings the numeral 10 indicates a post or rod whose lower end portion is fixedly clamped in a hub or boss 11 by means of a set-screw 12, thehub 11 being formed integral with a screw-clamp 13, as seen in Fig. 1, or, preferably, with a plate portion 14 which is pivoted or hinged to a similar plate 15 which is cast or otherwise formed, integral with the said clamp, as seen in the Fig. 3. In the last described construction the plate 14: is formed with a straight-edge 16 and a right angular straight-edge 17 said straight-edges being so positioned with respect to the clamp that, when the complete device is clamped upon a horizontal object as, for example, the edge of a table, the edge 16 will be clamped in a horizontal position and the post 10 will be vertical (see Fig. 3) and when the clamp is fixed upon an upright object, such as for example, the back of a chair, the edge 17 may be swung into parallel relation to the chair back and be clamped thereto, thus maintaining the post 10 in a vertical, or approximately, vertical position.

Rotatably mounted on the post 10 and resting upon the upper end of the hub 11 is a spider disk 18 formed preferably on or secured to a collar 19 whereby a long bearing is provided to prevent undue Wabbling of the spider; said spider being specially designed to have hinged thereto a plurality of ribs 20 whose free end portions are curved inwardly and upwardly Patented Oct. 9, 1917.

as at 21, and each rib 20 is connected near its mid portion by a spreader rod 22 whose other end is hinged to a spider-shaped runner 23 which is adapted to slide upon the'post 10 in order to spread, or draw together, the ribs 20 after the manner of opening or closing an umbrella; thus adjusting the curved ends 21 of each opposing pair of ribs 20 so as to support larger or smaller skeins of yarn. In order to permit the runner 23 to revolve on the post 10 while it is locked against endwise movement on said post, I have flanged the upper end of the runner to provide an annulus 24 which is inclosed by an annulus 25 on a ferrule 26 which may be clamped to the post 10 by means of a set'screw 27 The structure, as described, is capable of free rotation on post 10; it may be adjusted to any desired spread within the limits of structure, and it may be readily clamped to any reasonably thin horizontal or vertical object.

When it is desired to utilize the reel thus provided it is first clamped rigidly in its raised, operative position. The curved rib ends 21 are then adjusted to receive and support the particular size of skein which is to be rewound. The ferrule 26 is then clamped to the post 10 and the reel is ready for use. After use, its ribs may be folded inward, against the post; the clamp may be which it has been temporarily secured, and

the complete device may be laid away until it is again needed.

Having thus descrlbed my lnventlon, and
