INVEN TOR.

DISPLAY-smith:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TATSUKICHI ENooHTY, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising signs, of the kind usually placed on the house tops and at road sides for use in advertising.
A sign of this character usually consists of long sheet iron plates upon which the desired advertising matter is painted. It has been found in practice that such sheet metal signs are subject to considerable ex pansion and contraction, according to conditions of temperature and weather. The result of such expansion and contraction is that the paint, which is generally laid on fairly thickly, breaks and peels off, thus spoiling the desired effect.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved advertising sign of this kind in which the defect above pointed out is obviated.
I accomplish my object by providing the s'ign throughout substantially its entire'extent with a series of perforations or breaks, the effect of which is that the paint will not break or peel ofi, and if the sign does expand or contract the general effect of the painting thereon will be preserved and if any racks develop they will be of such minute character as not to be visible except upon close inspection, and will not detract from the general appearance and effect of the painted advertising.
By providing the breaks or projections,
as suggested above, I divide the surface of a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,588.
plane of the sign. I have also found it desirable to apply a coat of paint to the rear of the sign which, to some extent, assists in preventing distortion of the metal.
One of the numerous forms in which the invention may be embodied is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my improved sign; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. I
In the drawing 10 denotes a support such as a fence or a house top upon the upper edge of which are standards 11 which support the. sign 12; The sign consists of a sheet of galvanized iron, of suitable length.
and width, such sheet being provided throughout its extent with openings or perforations 13, which are preferably formed, as indicated in the drawing, by punching out triangular tongues and bending them slightly rearwardly out of the plane of the sheet 12. Upon the face of the sign the desired advertising matter 1% is painted, this advertising matter being usually superimposed on a coat of paint 15 which is first applied to the front face of the sheet 12.
The rear face of the sign may be covered with a coat of paint 16 which, for reasons not entirely known to me, restrains the tendency of the sign to distort under the effect of temperature and weather changes.
As above indicated, the form of the openings 13. shown in the drawing is the preferred one, but Ido not desire to be limited to such form.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An advertising sign, consisting of a sheet of metal, having openings therein throughout its extent, a coat of paint upon at least oneface of said sheet, and advertising matter superimposed on said coat of paint. 1
2. An advertising sign comprising a sheet of metal having tongues cut therefrom and bent out of the planev of said sheet to form openings throughout the entire extent of the latter, a coat of paintupon at least one face of said sheet, and advertising matter superimposed on said coat of paint.
3. An advertising sign comprising a sheet sheet of galvanized metal having openings of metal having triangular tongues stamped formed therein and painted on both sides. 10 out therefrom throughout its extent and In testimony whereof I have affixed my bent out of the plane of the sheet, a coat of signature in presence of tWoWitnesses.
paint upon at least one face of said sheet, TATSUKIGHI ENOCHTY. and advertising matter painted on said coat Witnesses: of paint. OTTO MUNK,
4. An advertising sign consisting of a GLARICE FRANoK.
