Description

L. J. WESTNESS.
WINDOW ATTACHMENT. 7
I Patented Oct. 9,1917.
APPLICATION FHcED JULY 22. 1916-:
1 to permit ready: access 1 5 To allwhomitmay'concerm,-
V Be it known thatL- I-AQUIS J. Wnsrnnss,
a citizen. of the United States, and; resident of; Milwaukee; in the county. of .Milwaukee and State of A V-Visconsin; have invented new and useful Improvements in 'Window. :A t tachments, of w'hich the following isa description, reference {being hadto the accompanying drawingswhich area part oftth s specification. ,j: i
This-invention has for; its object to vide an attachment for Windows which enable. their beingswung from the casing thereto jfor cleaning. the invention is to make etc .Another object-of such an attachment which will be strong and,
durable for ,the purpose and which may be readily/placed in operative position afnd when'removed; will leave] the window sash' and. its ;ca'singvfree from conspicuous per nanentfastenings. V V Another ob ect. of the invention is to Jpro-i vide such an attachment whichmaygb'efim expensive and Which may 'be easily-installed' without material alteration of" the wood-j work. "12 With t'heabove and .other ob ects-1n.v1ew
the invention consists in the wind ow attach:
a t as herein claimed and all equivalents :Referring to the accompanying ,drawings, in which like characters ofxreferenoe indicategthesamepar'ts in the differentiviews,
Figure lwis 'ase'ctiona'l elevation of a win dow, equipped with thewindow attachment. of "this invention and"sho'wing the lower sash pivotally mounted on the attachment and ready to be swung from thei casing;
Fig. 2 is a sectional planlview thereof with the parts in the same position;
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional plan showing the window sash swung out of the'-" casing; I
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the lower end of the hinge bar showing the clamping member inits open position;
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the clampingi member in its closed or locked position; an
Fig. 6 is an edge view thereof in this position. V
In these drawings 10 indicates a window casing provided with sash stops 11 and 12 forming guide grooves between them for the window sash at suitable points has wood screws 14: fastened thereto With their heads Slight y pr s will;
' gagement with 13 as usual. The sash stop 12' '1 ATTIKGHMEW refine holeslots -l5 of a fiat hinge bar 16 which is thus adapted .tobe secured in place against V i Specification of Letters Patent"? i7 .npplicationni a xuf aa, 1916. swarm;11am i so asltobe adapted .raiveky-I the hinge.bartandptheapart sup ittends to hold it securely in its consisting of.v a flat metal; lever .isipivotally mounted near the lower 'end-of the hinge bar 16 and has a camshaped :notch 18 to engage the} shankjof; one'of the screws 1st, and thec'am action of thenotch is such that as the clamping member'is swung-fromits 1 P open1positionsh0wn' iniFig. 4 to its closed position shown' in; Fig. 5 it bears upvviardly' on the. sha'nkof the screw, thus drawing the hinge ibaril6 downwardly into locking enall of; the. screws 14" and bringing'itsirounded lower end,19 intobearing. engagementlwith'the sill'of the window Y frame. The front edge of the clamping membertil7 is preferablybent out wrorma projection 20 by means'zof which it maybe 1;

One side stile of' the window sash-"13 has passingithere'through and the loops or eyes.
pivotleyes thereon for me'd' bycotter lpins '23 1 of th'esexcotteripins are elongated and adapt:
ed to fit upon the upstanding points ofthe hook' members 21;" the latter-being enlarged and' flattened to form heads which are free" to pass through the elongated eyes of the cotter pins when the sash is in place in the o window frame as shown in Fig. 2, but which from when the sash is swung outwardly" as shown in Fig. 3.
.100 prevent the removal of the cotter pins there'- swung inwardly into theroom for-cleaning,
it being only necessary to attach the hinge bar by placing it on the projecting ends of screws 14 and then swinging the clamping member 17 to its clampingposition; This draws the hinge bar downwardly into firm eng g ment with .S 3 IWVS "lifsg as to be held by the heads thereof also moves it into bearing engagement with thewindoW sill. The sash which has been previously" raised slightly is then lowered to; pass the elongated loops of the cotter pins 28 over 7 21 of the hinge bar .it is incapable ofbeing lifted off of the hooks because of, the fiat heads of the hookslying across the elongated slots of the pivot eyes, as-shown in Fig. Whenthe window has been cleaned'it is quickly restoredby swinging it back into the frame and replacing the far sash. stop 12 then raising the sash ofl thepivot hooks 211 By swinging the clamping men1- ber"17 upwardly the upper surface of its cam notch bears on the shank'of the screw placed in operative position and'i'emove d- 14 to 'lift the hinge bar and thus bring all of the keyhole openings 15 into position to readily pass over the heads of the screws 14; The hinge bar is quickly and easily therefrom, while the swinging of thewindow sashthereon. may also be accomplished with. ease and. without loss'of time, softhat the use of the present invention will permit of the cleaning of the windows from with in the room with a saving of time and without'the danger. incident. to the 'o-rdinary method. The wood screws 14 and. the pivot eyes 23 are the only parts i'emaining in place after, the hinge bar has been removed so that the equipment is inconspicuous and does not mar the appearance of the window.- It. is inexpensive and does not require'material alteration for its installation, andstill is strong anddurab'le in use and highly eflicient for the'purpose intended.
.VVhile the vmetal strip has been shown and described as removably' securedto the casing. or the sash stop forming a part there of, it. is obvious that it may be removably attached to the window sash and have its hook members positioned to engage eye members, on the casing. Such reversal of position of parts is intended to be included in the claimed invention.
What I "claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a window, an attachment thereto, comprising a metal strip having sl'otte'd 'openlngs; headed project ons on the side "of the window casing adapted'to fit in saidopenings to removably 'secu're the strip infplace, a"clamping lever fulcrumed on the metal strip and having cams for moi ing the'metal-strip fromfaposition in which the headed projections lie within the larger portions of. the openings to a positi'onfii-n which they lie within the slotted portions Of "the openings and for movingritback again, hooks projecting from the metal strip;
and eye members projecting from' thefwin d'ow sash and adapted'to engagethehooks and form the hinge connection for: the: win dow sash. 2. In con'ibination witha window, an. at; tachment therefor comprising a metal "strip. having openings, headed projections on' the side of" the window casing adaptdrto fit in said openings to removably secureithest'rip inplace, a clamping'lever fulcrumedf Ion. the metal I strip" andhaving. a cam notch. engaging'one of the headedv projections for mov.. ing the'metal strip into engage1nent-with the window sill when the metal strip isfsecured in place, hooks' projecting from the metal strip, -'and- 'eye membersprojecting. from the window sash and adapted-to en gage the hooks I and form the hinge connectioni for the "window sash.
