WILLIAM H. ERICK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
REAIVIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I A ipfieation filed July 19, 1918, Serial No. 110,150. Renewed June 13, 1917. SerialNo. 174,618-
and particularly to devices employed for truing and enlarging holes and commonly known as reamers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a reamer having a series of rotatably adjustable cutters in the periphery thereof, and simple, reliable and efficient means for holding the cutters in position and adjusting them to regulate and vary their cutting action.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a reamer constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjusting collar.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of a bit holder, cylindrical in form, having a reduced portion or neck 2 at the rear end, and furnished with a central bore 3 extending entirely through the holder, the said body being formed in its rear end with an annular flange or abutment shoulder 4.
The holder 1 is provided with a series of channels or grooves 5, cylindrical in form, arranged concentrically to the axial line of the holder, and havingone side open to the periphery of the holder.
These grooves extend to and through the forward end of the body 1, but terminate at their rear ends in proximity to the flange or abutment 4.
Within the said channels or grooves 5 are located cylindrical cutting elements or bits 6 each having a suitable longitudinal channel 7, so formed as to leave a salient lip 8 which forms the cutting edge of the bit. The cutting elements are held in their seats or channels 5 from lateral displacement by the overhanging of the curved walls of said channels, and are retained from H, Fnron,
longitudinal displacement by screws 9 which pass through holes in the flange or abutment 4c and are received in threaded sockets in the rear ends of the bits or cutters, it being understood that by tightening the screws the bits may be locked in adjusted position,
while by loosening the screws the bits will be freed for adjustment,
The bits have a turning fit in their seats 5 and when the said screws 9 are loosened the 1 bits may be rotated in their sockets byithe following means: The forward ends of the bits are formed with cam grooves 10, preferably in the nature of spiral grooves, which receive the projections 11 upon an adjusting collar or ring 12, disposed between the forwardends of the cutters beyond the forv ward end of the body 1 and having an inwardly extending flange 13. The collar is carried by an actuating member lt which is in the form of a tube or thimble, which extends through the collar and has a flange 15 bearing against the outer side of the flange 13 and is provided with a nut 16 bearing against the'inner side of'said flange, whereby the collar is clamped to the tube turn or rotate the cutters in one direction" or the other for adjustment, adapting the cutters to be adjusted in a ready and convenient manner and then firmly locked in adjusted position by the projections and .cam grooves and through the tightening of the screws 9.
I claim:- 7 V 1. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of, rotatably adjustable cutters upon the holder provided with cam grooves, and a longitudinally movable adjusting member having projections to engage said grooves, for rotatably adjusting the cutters.
v2. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carried thereb-y, said cutters being" provided with cam grooves, a longitudinally movable adjusting member having projections to engage said grooves, and an operating element for communicating motion to said rotatable adjusting member.
In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatable adjustable cutters carried thereby, said cutters being provided with cam grooves, a longitudinally movable adjusting member having projections for engagement with said grooves, and means for locking the cutters in adjusted position.
i, In a reamor, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carried thereby, said cutters being provided with cam grooves, an actuating member movably mounted on the holder, and a longitudinally movable adjusting member operated by said actuating member and having projections to engage said cam grooves.
5. In a reamer, the combination ofv a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carried thereby, said cutters being provided with cam grooves, a rotary adj usting member having projections engaging said cam grooves, and an actuating member connected with the holder for longitudinal adjustment relative thereto and operatively connected with said adjusting member.
6. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carded thereby, said cutters being provided with cam grooves, an operating member connected with the holder for movement longitudinally and rotatable with re spect thereto, an adjusting member carried thereby and having projections to en-' gage said cam grooves, and means independent of said actuating and operating members for locking the cutters in ad justed position.
' 7. In a reamer, the combination I of a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carried thereby, said cutters being provided with cam grooves, an operating element connected with-the holder for longitudinal and rotary movements with respect thereto, and an adjusting member carried by said operating member and having projections to engage the cam grooves in the cutters.
S. In a reamer, the combination of a holder provided with peripheral cutter seats, cutters rotatably mounted in said seats eccentric to the axis of the holder, said cutters being provided with grooves inclined to their axes, and a longitudinally movable member upon the holder provided with projections engaging said inclined grooves and forming therewith a cam mechanism for simultaneously rotating the cutters on their axes.
In testimony whereof I HiIlX my signature.
WILLIAM H. FRICK.
