BEAMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,151.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. FRIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beamers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machinists tools and especially to devices employed for truing and enlarging holes and commonly known as reamers.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool embodying a series of rotatably adjustable cutters, so arranged that their salient edges may be uniformly and simultaneously adjusted relatively Vto the axis of the device, combined with simple and etlicient means for adjusting the cutters and holding them from displacement.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described -and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a reamer embodying my invention, the plane of section being on a line through two diametrically opposite cutters.

. Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. 1 taken through one portion of one side of the reamer on a line between adjacent cutters.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of the reamer, which is tubular in form, having a narrow ledge or liange 2 at the extreme rear end upon which rests a tightly fitted collar 3. This collar surrounds the body 1 and is provided with a counterbored recess l to receive a combined worm and gear sleeve 5 extending beyond the said collar and occupying a recess 6 counterbored in the rear end of a cutter holder or carrying sleeve 7 which surrounds the body 1 and engages the collar 3 at the rear end. rlhe said holder or sleeve is retained in position upon the body 1 by a threaded collar 8 engaging the forward end of the body, and between this collar and a shoulder 9 formed by a counterbore or recess 10 at the outer endof the holder or sleeve is clamped a rotary cutter retaining ring 11 which projects beyond the outer face of the collar 8.
The holder' or sleeve has its periphery provided with an annular series of channels o r grooves 12, which are approximately cylmdrical in form, having one side open to theV periphery of the holder, and are arranged concentrically to the axial line of the holder. Within said channels or grooves are located cylindrical cutting elements or bits 13 each having a suitable longitudinal channel 14 upon one side, so formed as to leave a salient lip 15 which forms the cutting edge of the bit. The cutting elements are rotatably adjustable in their seats formed by the channels or grooves 12 to project the cutting lips 15 to a greater or less degree, and are held from lateral displacement by the overhanging of the curved Walls of said channels.
The cutters 13 rest at their rear ends against the `rear walls of the channels, which terminate short of such end of the holder or sleeve, and are insertible and removable longitudinally through the forward ends of the channels, which open through the forward end of the sleeve. As shown, the periphery of the retaining ring 11 is provided with notches 16 cur-ved to lit the bodies of the bits 13, theintervening intact portions forming teeth 17 which are adapted to engage transverse grooves or slots 18 formed in the bodies of the bits, whereby said bits are held in the channels against endwise displacement, and are also limited in their rotary movements. The gear sleeve 5 is provided with gear teeth 19 near one end adapted to mesh with teeth 2O on the bodies of the cutters, and near the other end the periphery of the sleeve is furnished with worm teeth 21 engaged by a worm 22 journaled in a bore 23 in the collar 3. One end of this worm is provided with a retaining nut 24C and the opposite end of the worm is formed with a socket 25 to receive a projection from a wrench or turning tool whereby said warm may be rotated, the rotation of the worm eli'ecting a rotation of the adjusting collar 5, whereby the cutters 13 will be simultaneously adjusted to like degrees in their seats, the worm gear forming an automatic locking connection to hold the cutters in adjusted position, as will be readily understood. The mode of adjusting the bits in their seats will be apparent,
and it will. be evident that in j assembling thebits the latter are placed in their sockets in the holding sleeve, the retaining ring 11 dropped into itsseat with the bodies of the euttersvengaging the notches 16 and then turned until the teeth 17 enter the slots'lS in the cutters, whereupon the cutters will be held from outward displacement. It will also be evident that as by the construction described all the cutters may be easily and conveniently adjusted as occasion requires and that said cutters will be locked firmly inadjusted position without the use of auX- iliary locking means.

In a reamer, the combination of a body, a holder carried by the body and provided with cutter receiving channels, rotatably adjustable cutters mounted in said channels and having slots formed therein, a retaining ring provided with depressions adapted to be alined with said channels and with teeth betweeny the depressions adapted to project intoy the slots of the cutters to hold said cutters from displacement, means forholding said ring in position, and means for adjusting the cutters.

In a reainer, the combination of a body, a holding sleeve mounted on the body, a series of rotatably adjustable Cutters carried by said sleeve, retaining means for holding the sleeve in position and the cutter against displacement, a gear collar rotatable on the body and in meshing engagement with the cut-ters, and worm gearing for rotating said gear collar.
9. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters carried by the holder, gearing for adjusting said cutters, the latter being normally free for rotary adjust-nient under the action of said gearing, and combined operating and locking means for actuating the gearing and locking the same in any position.
10. In a reamcr, the combination of a holder, provided with a series of partially circular cutter receiving seats, a series of rotatably adjustable cutters arranged within said seats andheld from lateral displacement thereby, said cutters being provided with gear teeth, a rotatable collar provided with gear teeth meshing` with the gear teeth of the cutters and also provided with worm teeth, and. a wormY mounted by the holder and meshing with said worin teeth whereby the collar may be rotated to simultaneously rotate the cutters :tor adjustment.
