LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Application filed September 21, 1916. Serial No. 121,498.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDSON L. BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lifters designed for use in assisting in removing the springs encircling the valve stems of internal combustion engines. In grinding or replacing these internal combustion engine valves, it is necessary to first remove the spring normally seating the valve, from its operative position and then removing the entire valve.
The main object of my invention, therefore, resides in a peculiar structure of yoke member arranged to bear at one end upon the valve head and encircling the valve stem at its other end, together with means for causing an elevation of the yoke member to lift the same against the tension of the hold ing spring.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 shows my improved type of lifter in partial side elevation and partial section in its operative position in connection with an internal combustion engine valve and stem, and,
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the lower leg of the yoke member.
In these drawings, I have diagrammatically represented an engine body portion by the reference numeral 1, this engine being provided with a valve comprising a head 2 and a stem 3. The lower end of the valve is provided with a washer 4, which latter is held in position by means of the pin 5 passing through the valve stem, in order that the spring 6 encircling the stem may be operatively held in position. In removing the valve, it is first necessary to remove the pin 5 which releases the operative connection between the spring 6 and the valve stem 3. After this pin has been removed, the stem itself may also be removed.
It is the means for permitting the removal Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the pin 5, with which my invention is particularly concerned. This lifter comprises a substantially U-shaped yoke member 7 having a pair of legs 8 and 9. The leg 8 has its end bifurcated, as is shown at 10, in order to embrace the valve stem and also span the pin 5. The other leg 9 pivotally carries at its outer end, as is shown at 11, a cam lever 12 whose hump 13 is arranged to bear upon the upper surface of the valve head 2 in such manner that when the lever is moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, to the position shown in dotted lines, the entire yoke member will be elevated against the tension of the spring. lVhen in such po sition, the pin 5 may be veryreadily removed, inasmuch as the bifurcated end of the leg 8 engages the underside of the washer 4L and carries the same away from this pin. After the pin has been removed, the cam 1ever 12 is moved back to the position shown in full lines and the entire lifter removed from its operative position. After this, the valve may be readily removed in the manner which will be obvious.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a lifter of considerable utility and one wherein the valve may be removed by a simple application of my improved tool.
What I claim, is:
A lifter for use in removing the spring holding pin of a valve stem comprising a substantially U-shaped yoke member, one leg of said member being bifurcated to fit the vali e stem beneath the spring encircling In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
