Be it known that I, GnosvnNon ATTER- Bunr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State o f New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates particularly to molds or forms for use in casting blocks of concrete or other cementitious material.
One object of my invention is to provide a. mold of this character whereby blocks of the desired form may be cast with theleast possible expense of time and labor.v
Another object of my invention is to provide such a mold which shall be inexpensive in construction and reliable and efhcient in operation. l l
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a mold which after the block has been cast therein can be readily adjusted to permit of the ready separation of the block and mold.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, my invention comprises broadly the provision of a mold having a pair of side pieces of any desired form, and one or more pairs of end pieces interposed therebetween. I provide means, preferably manually operable, for adjusting the side pieces toward and from each other, so that they may be retracted from the block which is being cast, when desired. The two end pieces of each pair are also adjustable toward and from each other for thev same purpose, and I preferably so construct the means for effecting this latter adjustment that they will be brought into operation to retract the end pieces after the sidepieces have been retracted a predetermined distance.y The ob ject of thus delaying the retraction of the end pieces is to cause them to retain'the block or blocks in position until the side` pieces have been separated therefrom,l and thus prevent the block or blocks from adhering to one or the other of the side pieces and cores.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, taken on the -line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and showing the parts in position to receive the moldable material; and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof showing the parts 'in such position as to permit the removal of the completed block or blocks therefrom. v
My improved mold includes a Vpair of parallel side pieces 10 Fig. 2 which, as herein illustrated, are constructed of plates 11 and angle bars 12, the'plates 11 being bentover at the'top, and bottom, to form blocks having rounded edges. The particular construction of the side pieces will, of course, dependjupon the form of block it is desired to cast.
. These side pieces are adjustable toward and from each other, and any suitable or ydesired'means may be employed for eecting this adjustment. As herein shown, hows ever,'I employ ascrew'13 having oppositely 'threaded portions 111, 15, which are in threaded engagement with apertures in the blocks 16, 17, respectively, secured tothe side pieces in any desired manner. The screw 13 is preferably provided with some such means as the handle 18 whereby it may be rotated manually.
It is apparent that when the screw 13 is thus rotated,'the side pieces will be adjusted toward or from eachother, depending upon the direction of rotation of the screw 13.
In order to maintain the side pieces 10, at all times in parallelism, I preferably employ some such means as the hinges 19, `the 'ends yof which are pivotedto the side pieces as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and which are of sufficient width to constrain the movement of the side pieces]l v Interposed between the two side pieces 10 are the end pieces 20 arranged in pairs. Any desired number of,pairs of end pieces l may be'employed, depending` upon the numberof blocks itl is desired to cast at one time. I have herein shown a moldA provided with two pairs of end pieces 2O whereby two blocks may be simultaneously cast inthe apparatus, and when such a construction is employed I preferably locate the adjuster 13 between the two central. end pieces as shown in Fig. 1. The end piecesvherein illustrated are constructed in substantially the same` manner as the side pieces, that is, of angle bars and plates, the latter being bent over at the top and bottom, but it is obvious'that the form and manner of construction of the end pieces may ,be changed as desired. Each of the end pieces 20 is provided with a pair yof rods or members 21.. The central portion 22 of each of the members 21 is of greater length than the end piece to which it is secured, and the end portions 23 vof these members are bent at an angle to the end pieces. The members 21 pass through aper-n tures 24 Fig. 2 in the side pieces 10. llhe object .of this particular .construction of the rodsl or members 21 will appear more fully hereinafter.

I am aware that it has heretofore been lproposed to provide for the simultaneous .retraction of four hinged wallssof a mold b y means of members somewhat similar to the members 21 of my improved mold. But so far as I know, Iam the first .to so construct these members so yas to .delay the retraction of the 'end pieces until after the .initial retraction of the end pieces, kor to employ such membersin .connection with rectilinearly movable end pieces (asdistinguis'hed from hinged end pieces), in which `connection they serve the additional function of maintaining the end .pieces in parallelism. v

3. A mold for casting a fblook -ofcemenv.titious material, :comprising -a pair -Of-fsiib-v stantially parallel side pieces provided with.
apertures, a pair of end pieces interposed therebetween, means operable at will for simultaneously retracting the side pieces from the block, and rods secured to the end pieces and passing through the apertures in the side pieces, each of said rods comprising an intermediate portion of greater length than the end piece to which it is secured and parallel thereto, and end portions disposed angularly to said end pieces whereby the end pieces will remain stationary during the initial retractile movement of the side pieces and will thereafter be retracted thereby.
4. A mold for casting a block of cementitious material, comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a pair of end pieces interposed therebetween, means operable at will for simultaneously retracting the side pieces from the block, a plurality of hinges having their ends pivoted to said side pieces for maintaining the side pieces in parallelism during their retraction and means operated by the retractile movement of the side pieces for retracting the end pieces from the block.
5. A mold for casting a block of cementitious material, comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a pair of substantially parallel end pieces interposed therebetween, an actuator provided with oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement respectively with said side pieces for retracting said side pieces from the block, and means operated by the retractile movement of the side pieces and adapted to come into operation subsequently to the retraction of the side pieces from the block for retracting the end pieces from the block and for maintaining them in parallelism during such retraction.

A mold for casting a block of cementitious material, comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a pair of substantially parallel end pieces interposed therebetween, a core secured to one of said side pieces, means operable at will for simultaneously retracting the side pieces and core from the block, and means operated by the retractile movement of the side pieces for retracting the end pieces from the block and for maintaining them in parallelism during such retraction.

A mold for casting a block of cementitious material, comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a pair ot' end pieces interposed therebetween, a tapered core secured to each of said side pieces, the inner ends of said cores being normally in contact whereby a void is formed through the block, means operable at will for simultaneously retracting the side pieces and the cores from the block, and means operated by the retractile movement of the said side pieces for retracting the end pieces from the block.

A mold for simultaneously casting a plurality oit' blocks of cementitious material comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a plurality of pairs of end pieces interposed therebetween, one of the end pieces of one pair being adjacent one of the end pieces of another pair, an actuator interposed between said adjacent end pieces and provided with oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement respectively with said side pieces forretracting said side pieces from the block, and means operated by the retractile movement of said side pieces for retracting the end pieces from the block.
9. A mold for simultaneously casting a plurality of blocks of cementitious material comprising a pair of substantially parallel side pieces, a plurality oit' pairs of end pieces interposed therebetween, one of the end pieces of one pair being adjacent one of the end pieces of another pair, an actuator interposed between said adjacent end pieces and provided with oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement respectively with said side pieces for retracting said side pieces from the block, and means operated by the retractile movement of said side pieces for retracting the end pieces from the block, and for maintaining said end pieces at all times in parallelism, said last mentioned means being so constructed that they become operative to re tract the end pieces after the side pieces yhave been retracted for a predetermined distance.
