7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. WAR- has its'edge opposite that of the cutting residing at Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVirc-Cutting Devices, of which the.following is a specification. V
This invention relates to a wire cutting device for the stocks of guns, rifles, etc.,- and the object of the invention is to provide a 'vhich shall be simple, cheap and hich may be easily attached to f a rifle without weakening the said stock, nd which will not interfere with handling or aiming of the said gun or lVith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawingsz Figure 1 is a view of a gun stock provided with my improvement, the lever of the cutting member being shown in its open or operative position by. the dotted lines,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line,33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4- is a perspective view of thev jaw carrying member, b Fig. 5 is a similar view of the lever mem- Fig. 6 is a sectional view approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the clamp.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a portion of an ordinary gun or rifle having the usual stock 2. This stock, adjacent the ber 4. The ears are secured to the stock by suitable rivets 5' and the outer face of the yoke, at the center thereof is provided with a pair of spaced angularly arranged jaw members-6 and 7 respectively. The jaw 6,
at what I will term its inner edge is beveled ,or inclined, as at 8, forming the said inner edge withta cuttingelement and the jaw 7 edge disposed in the horizontal plane of said cutting edge. Pivote'd between the jaws and 7 as at 9, is a lever 10 which is preferably I-shaped in cross section and which gradually decreases in cross sectional area from its pivoted end to its opposite or free end. The free end of the lever is received in a channel 11 formed by longitudinally depressing the stock 2 and may be locked therein through the medium of a spring latch 11. The latch is secured in the channel 11 and is shaped to engage in one of the depressions provided in the side of the lever, 10, as clearly illustrated inFig. 6 of the drawings. This latching or clamping member 11 is provided with a handle 12 which extends out of the channel 11 and the said latch may be fitted in a suitable groove 13 whereby the same may be readily forced out of engagement with the lever to permit of the same being swung to inoperative position. The end of the lever is provided with a swinging bail 14 to receive one end of the rifle strap. The outer or enlarged end of the lever provides a head 15 and the face of the yoke between the jaws 6 and 7 is preferably formed with a longitudinally extending slot 16, and the rounded edges of the yoke at the juncture with the parallel straight walls provided by the slot also afford knife edges which will facilitate the cutting of barbed wireentanglements. The wire is arranged between the substantially L-shaped jaws 6 and 7 and the grooved end of the yoke, and by swinging the lever toward the stock of the rifle the cutting edges between the head 15 of the said lever, the edge 8 of the jaw 6 and the slotted end of the yoke will cause the said wires to be easily and quickly severed.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventionv appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a rifle stock, of a yoke member having its arms secured thereto, said yoke having its central portion formed with a pair of spaced substantially L-shaped jaws, and being provided with a slot between the j aws, a lever having a widened head provided with a cutting edge pivotally secured between the jaws. said lever being I-shaped in cross section and gradually decreasing in diameter from its head to its free end, the stock I havin a In testimony whereof I aifix signatnre longitudinal channel to receive the en of in presence of two witnesses. the lever, a, spring pressed catch in the channel, said catch including a handle portion FREDERICK W 5 and an ofi'set portion, said ofi'set portion Witnesses:
adapted to engage in the depression in one W. B. ,llaLecCour,
of the sides of the lever. RUTH FERGUSON.
